@@daltonpalmerj he is an Ubisoft and Horizon fanboy - he is salty that a game like Elden Ring became the better open world game compared to Horizon and Ubisoft games.
That should be common honestly. How can some veteran/elitist idiots be there like *you are bad/noob* when they're just beginning the damn game?! Instead of some help you get this Load .
@@TheREALHugo4 I work in the Marine Corps, I'm married, I play Elden Ring in addition to Lost Ark, mobile games and other games that demand a lot of my time and I beat this game twice already with 2 separate characters. You can do it too my guy
Yeah those people are stupid, I also blame the people who are so submissive and look for anyone to hold their hand. Seriously, you've been given a brain, use it and find what makes you happy.
I love that when you see other players walking around in different armors sets with different weapons and you think "I can earn that". Just the fact that I don't have to wonder what pack it came in, and that is included in the base game is such a breath of fresh air it's almost depressing thinking about how gamers are used to being nickel and dimed for every skin.
A lot of single player games do this, stop playing multiplayer games or play better ones. This myth is just so pervasive and partially true, but people choose to play the games that have these problems, even when the games themselves announce it. You are doing it to yourself.
@@Bound4Earth Except this game has a fleshed out (albeit horribly balanced) multiplayer system. It can be considered a multiplayer game, and yet it has this level of quality and doesn't nickel and dime us for trying to play in the multiplayer section of the game. I know we've reached the point of multiplayer games having all of these pervasive issues, but it's just not acceptable, and we should be praising games that refuse to do this and actually allow character customization at no additional cost.
@@Bound4Earth I'd love you to name an example for that claim :D I bought Tales of Arise last year, loved it but like 75% of costumes are DLC. Really disheartening
@@Bound4Earth the problem is that most of the franchises that have microtransactions didn't always used to have them. It creeps slowly into all your favorite games, slowly and patiently. Nothing is safe anymore, except maybe fromsoft and a small handful of others
As a souls player, I love the fact so many people are having fun with this game. Don't let the minority of players bully you into playing the way they think it's meant to be played. Believe me, a win is a win no matter how you get it
Not to mention it makes the whole fan base seem like assholes. I hate people like that. Variety and different ways to play invites new people to the series which is awesome
@@danielcharles3553 I would love that. Of course, I say that knowing we'd never have a damn clue what the game is about. Separately their games are cryptic. Together? Your brain would melt.
@@narusora1 I feel Alex though when he's like that. I come from the same Era of gaming as Alex, Joe and OJ. Back when studios and devs HAD to come out swinging if they wanted success. We had limited money as kids for games back then so a game had to be able to hold my attention for months, and the amount of content mattered to me a lot. We only get 4 or 5 games tops now a days that even come close to hitting that type of love and care anymore. My little cousins are so used to how games are now when I talk about gaming and the amount of content I got as kid they look at me crazy. Sorry for the rant, I just miss when most devs and studios actually put love and care into their games. I feel like indie games are really holding it down in that regard though. My brother and I play more indie games now than AAA. And they're cheaper which boggles my fucking mind. Lol
"Don't say you're bad you just started." That supporitve comment from OJ is such an important thing to take to heart when you're playing the game and the kind of support you should give someone playing this game.
honestly every person who started elden ring as their first souls game need to hear that death is not mean you're bad at this games death is the core gameplay mechanic in elden ring
Remember folks getting gud is about actually continuing to play the game and looking for new ways to overcome the challenge before you instead of giving up and writing a review about how the game is trash or something like that
I remember the first time i played DS3.. literally got my ass handed to me by gundyr for an hour straight lol. Its all about patience and perserverance, and the reward for your effort is so satisfying
I laughed hard when he was sitting on his horse, talking to his chat, and a horse rider comes up and wacks him. Do not AFK in a souls game. That was a nice reminder.

The greatest thing about this game is it's a solid proof that good games are extremely good for business. I mean it broke sales records within weeks of release. And it only cost $49.99 for the standard edition. But you still got a bunch of cool art pictures and stickers and other stuff with it. I'm 80 hours in, and I still got a lot to go... everytime I'm playing it I just can't fathom how I only paid 50 bucks this... Hopefully EA and Ubisoft, and all these other greedy video game companies will finally realize that you can make a genuinely good game and make tons of money at the same time. No need for micro transactions, abusing the playerbases, really high retail prices, pay2win crap, etc. Just make a great game and people will throw their money at you.
It’s proof for sure but EA is making millions if not billions from copy and pasting sports games and giving it a new title every year, it’ll most likely keep going sadly until people stop buying their games.
Though knowing mainstream gaming media, Horizon Forbidden West will win it instead of Elden Ring. Though hopefully it has more of a chance than Ghost of Tsushima. 😔
I'm 39 and thought maybe I had just outgrown gaming. Disappointment led to cynicism over the years. Then came Elden Ring. I feel like a kid again and very much still in love with gaming again. It's a Masterpiece.
32 and I agree. Though I would like to add that indie games are still everything that made me fall in love with gaming 25 years ago. They are still pure, they still push the boundaries of what is possible. I was having a ton of fun playing Everspace and Hollow Knight, both stellar indie games, just before Elden Ring came out. So yeah, gaming as a whole is still doing great, you just have to look in the right places. Whenever I hear triple AAA publishers pushing out a game again, I roll my eyes and suppress the urge to vomit.
It's a COMPLETE GAME. No micro transactions no releasing it in parts or any money grubbing bullshit. I paid for the game and I have the whole game. I cannot agree with you more on this. More devs should take this to heart.
If gamers were smart they would stop buying and playing games with micro transactions, lootboxes, NFTs etc. because that would cause a major video game crash and force devs to stop making rushed garbage and stop using predatory practices. Players just don't realize how much power they have. But in some cases, it's also that the fans of a game become attached to an IP so much that they just end up tolerating every malpractice. These days fandoms often become cults and Souls games aren't an exception. Thankfully Fromsoft cares but they could literally get away with anything at this point and souls fans would accept it. We all know it. That's why I'm afraid of FF7R part 2 having NFTs because I know for a fact FF players will not reject the game because of NFTs. Obviously they want to play part 2 and part 3 no matter what. So it gives SquareEnix an excuse / opportunity to milk FF7 players and get away with it.
It is not really "complete". It is clear that From Software is going to do something more with all those coliseums... and there are some relatively empty areas that might be reused in future DLC. But I see what you mean. If this is all that we get, it is (way) more than enough.
And I’d be willing to bet that if FromSoft does end up releasing DLC, it’s going to be packed with content and you’re going to get a fantastic experience for your money. Bloodborne’s DLC is the best single player DLC I’ve ever played.

what i really loved about this game is that even though 4 of my friends and myself started playing at the same time and have beat it. everytime we talked about it, its like we were playing different freaking games.
Now hold up. I've been told you can't have difficulty options because then people would experience the game differently and that would be terrible. And now you're telling me this is part of the default experience.
@@GunPotato87 experience can turn into a whole different concept if you talk about Game difficulty vs Player's personal choices to progress on the game. Another game difficulty only changes the requirements for the learning curves each one needs to take to overcome "something", either be easier or harder difficulty. Players personal choices within the gameplay(and games content) change THAT "something" and splits every player's paths into very unique scenarios, where they experience different needs, struggles or growth.
@@GunPotato87 Also, i consider every Dark Souls game already has a difficulty option in each one of their titlea already and that is NG+. It is avaliable after beating the game and makes everything harder, wich is fair considering the option is only avaliable until you already beat the game.
@@ElJags NG+ is legitimately the easiest run. Even with enemies scaled up a little you're overpowered vs NG. Only starts to balance out around NG+2,3 depending on how far you continue to level. The difficulty is in the method/playstyle. Ranged spells for the most part are easier than melee, summons exist to split boss aggro yada yada
This game was most definitely one of the best experiences I have had in a long loong time of gaming. I cannot wait to see what comes next from the creators!
I mean almost every Fromsoft games for the past 10 years has been amazing XD A game that makes me want to complete everything/ see what's everything that's there to see/ collect everything is a sign of a top notch game.
This review was just adorable. Lately all we see is our boys getting pissed and disappointed at how garbage games have become, constantly trying to grab all our money.... In this review however they are all describing how they had fun, simply as that.
So true. And understandable. I haven't even beaten my first run, and I've already placed this on the Game of the Year pedestal. There is no other that can beat this right now. And seeing and hearing them speak so highly of this, I can only whole heartily agree on every term :D

Elden Ring came out so complete. It reminds me of the good old days when games were released ONLY when they were complete because updates didn’t exist, on a cartridge or on a disk and they were a work of art that developers were proud of.
Every dark souls has come out like this, it may be a little rocky but it's still a COMPLETE and playable game. Even dark souls 2 the black sheep was great at launch. Only terrible one was dark souls 1 for PC, and it took the community like a week to fix it. Honestly feel like fromsoft is one of the last genuine game devs here for the players and not for cash money.
@@MrGhostTheBigRoast Maybe at the beginning, but if any other company ported this to PC it would have been completely unplayable. Be happy that it was available on PC this time around, making it available for so many players...

In regards to looking things up online for elden ring...I think that's part of what makes the community so great. I could always find an answer whenever I was stuck or lost. I've also met several new friends who were willing to help me fight a boss here or there. I think the game is a lot more fun when you have such a dedicated community of players willing to help each other reach the end game.

@flamingmanure truly. I nearly quit this game, as I had never played a game like this before. I was lost and totally overwhelmed. I used a guide to get going, then to make sure I had not missed anything in areas where I worked ahead. Is it the same as going in blind? Of course not. Did it allow me to enjoy what became my favorite game of all time instead of quitting? Yes.
i like how joe called it an awakening lol its crazy how good it feels the first time the souls series "clicks" with you in your mind, all the fear and nervousness just melts away and your mind finally relaxes so you can finally start to enjoy the experience, and then.............. you're hooked for life lol. nice review guys
Yes!! That’s exactly how it was for me with Bloodborne. It was my first Souls game that I completed, and it had that early onset creepiness factor to it, not just from the aesthetic but from knowing that it’s going to be a difficult game… And like you said, once it clicks, everything that was holding you back or making you tense up melts away.

This is probably the biggest game I have ever played. There is SO much content. People tell me I’m only halfway through while I am 90 hours into the game lol
Releasing a full game with 0 micro transactions with only minor performance issues in 2021/22 already makes a game deserving of at least a 7. Now when you release a game with a huge open world filled to the brim with content, amazing boss fights, a great story, amazing level design, variety, no right way to play, replay-ability, amazing attention to detail, multiple endings, your decision mattering in quests, etc. the game deserves a 10 and fromsoft deserves to be praised for the masterpiece they gave us. Fromsoft is perfecting the formula for its genre and continues to improve greatly with each game the release. From the souls to the bloodbornes to the sekiros to the elden rings, fromsoft just continues to release absolute amazing games that are actually for gamers and not the shareholders pockets.
I have a mid range gaming laptop. I’ve had minor performance issues. I think I’ve had maybe 1 or 2 deaths or significant interruptions due to performance issues across 150+ hours. And only about twice that it actually annoyed me enough to complain.

I avoided the Souls games forever. I let Elden Ring be my first exposure after I heard all the buzz, and now I can’t put it down. In a market saturated with bullshit, it’s incredible to see a FULL, COMPLETE game release with such quality and integrity, and no micro transactions. A masterpiece indeed, even with my shitty noob strength build.
I would say play the others, but you more than likely won't enjoy them as much. But the entire From Software library since Demon's souls has been a shining beacon of hope in this dark and cynical industry. Miyazaki is an exceptional visionary, and his team have immense talent.
I too started with elden ring and would highly recommend playing souls 3 if you get the chance. After elden ring "clicked" with me I had so much fun going back and taking on souls 3 with a new mindset.
I have only played as a mage build and I love seeing the spirits of other builds battling challenging bosses. I think to myself “I wonder what strategy they developed for beating this boss.” It’s so cool to know that they have completely different tools in their arsenal yet they are progressing as well. There is so much content I honestly feel like giving more money to the creators to encourage this type of game design. It’s been far too long since I’ve had to deal with unfinished games and pay to win. Absolute masterpiece 10/10 legendary game.

Great review. Took me over 350 hours to beat this (including all quest lines).. first 150 I didn't cheat and use youtube for help, so I was wandering around and dying way too much. Still 6 months after completing it, I still like hearing other peoples reviews of Elden Ring. It is a masterpiece !!!
The amount of content you get for standard box price is amazing. Other companies would have broken this up into the base game and 5 DLCs. From Software is striving for brand loyalty at this point, and earning it.
There is a critic from another channel. He said that this game is not Dark Souls 4. This is Dark Souls 4, 5 and 6. There is easly at least 2 full price game content here.
A friend bought the game for me because he wanted me to play with him. I was a bit skeptical of paying $60 for a new release because I didn't think there would be that much content. After starting it and then digging into the interactive map online I was overwhelmed by the amount of content. Totally worth the price and I'm glad to have been proven wrong. I'm only at 100 hours and still have a ton of content before the end. I'm enjoying taking my time as it's a nice change of pace with work being stressful.
FromSoft is literally the only company out there right now that I have absolutely zero fears of preordering a game from. I know there are a few other game studios out there that are reliable, but I’m not particularly a fan of their games.

Base games like this make me want to support the developers more. They have managed to make a game I feel is completely worth $60, I feel happy with what I paid for. I can get so much out of the base game alone that when/if they drop DLC for it, I am more than happy to pay for it to expand more on such a great game. Is it hard? Yes of course it can be. Then, not only do you feel like you as the player has progressed but you also make it easier on yourself. Games like this give me at least some hope for the future of gaming. 10/10
I'm still 195 hours into my first playthrough and I'm still finding new stuff. This game is just nuts, gamers really needed this W from From Software. To people who get frustrated at the game, understand BS aside, if you keep dying you're not learning from your mistakes just stick with it! This game is going to test you but as some who beat DS1 and 3, I can't think of many other games that give you that indescribable feeling of watching the boss that's been beating your ass for the last hour cower and spam the same moves when they're close to death. Thank you From Software for reminding me that some developers still put the player experience first over profits.
I think they realize putting the player experience first is more profitable than using psychology and fear of missing out to squeeze players for every penny (and waking moment).

For the record joe, I've played every souls game and I play them pretty religously. I love your review, and I love you calling out the gatekeepers of the community and the egotistical maniacs out there. Everyone has their own experiences when it comes to games and you can play your game anyway you want. If a certian playstyle makes YOUR experience fun and easier on you, it's your bread and butter. Your adventure is your own, sorry your experience with the community has been shitty, and as a souls veteran welcome to the community!
People are dumb annoying for telling people how to play. Especially when it’s their FIRST play through and first souls game. Like, let them do whatever they want in their first playthrough. If I was a streamer. Man….
And all those cocky elitists would get wrecked and t bagged in other games. If they want to spend that much time on one game that's fine. Anyone who sinks that much time into a game is going to get good but there's no reason to get cocky. Especially when you know you'd get crapped on in Warzone or Mortal Kombat etc.
I just throw all my runes at strength and whack the shit out of things to death. Still have the same weapons from the beginning too. Nope I’m not far at all. I die a lot. But I’m still having fun exploring until I meet another foe that demolishes me, and then back track some where else I haven’t explored and earn more runes.
Same! I've beaten every From Software game except for DS2 and I absolutely love all of these games. That being said, they are hard as hell. I want them to be accessible to everyone so if it means adding mechanics that can give anyone a chance, I'm all for it.
Best decision Joe made was to play the game off-stream. The souls elitists will ruin any fun from a souls stream with their backseat gaming and insulting the streamer for not "gitting gud".
@@lolicongang.4974 There is no right or wrong about gaming experience. I thought it was funny when he said in the review that it was never a grind… I’m pretty sure I remember entire second stream was grinding lmao. Glad he stuck with it until it clicked. So many people who would love these games have a negative opinion just because they never made it past that steep beginner learning curve.
Ah the Awakening that Joe experienced with Elden Ring is one that every player experiences with their first FromSoft game. It is amazing to see that everyone feels this way after such a game.
For me it happened with my second. Dark souls 1 didn’t click for me at any point and it wasn’t till I later tried blood borne that it all just fell into place. It really is a magical moment when everything finally just comes together
People keep peeing this marketing gimmicks and I’ve set this this back clicking, Manet I’m not stupid enough to miss the cheap tricks and lazy tactics.
That happened to me with demons souls on ps3. A screenshot was all i need. Ordered it from asia before it came out in Europe. Been hooked on from soft games ever since.
"I didn't feel like there was a grind, I was just lost the whole time." Yep, that's Souls alright -- to beat the game, there's little actual grinding; the enemies in areas typically give you the exp you need to match the challenge, and then the next area gives more. But the maze-like areas are brutal for first-timers, and you end up trecking into multiple split paths constantly. It's a nightmare for those people who say "oh, this looks like the right way, so I'm going to check out the other path first for loot".
That’s exactly the way that I play open world games is my checking the path it doesn’t look like the right way for loot first because I know I’m going to go the other way?!?! Great comment!!
My brain is sooo big and smooth that I can map the whole dungeon usually and see every path in my head so I never get lost. So when I backtrack down alleys for loot, I know exactly where I didnt go yet. First souls game btw didnt use ashes
I like to dual wield battle axes with a shield off hand for when things get tough. It's a fun way to play when you get used to it. I started Wretch and that's how things turned out. The best trick for playing this build is learn to rely on dodges specifically towards the front sides of the enemy's. The I frames will carry you threw the attack and you'll be lined up to strike. I love the Rush I get overcoming an enemy that's killed me many times. You should do a run through of dark souls. I used to play magic builds my first runs. But after beating sekiro my confidence with these games is great. Somehow I beat the Godskin Duo on first try after accidentally entering the room with barely any crimson tears leftover.
@@Claymorw because you’ve not been playing for enjoyment. You just focused going from place to place without exploring at your own pace. I’m like 110 hours in and still feel like there’s loads to do. The best part of elden ring is exploring.
Something I've been saying for years. From Software games are special. In my opinion the best part about this game is the progression. Not so much the character you play in game. Sure you notice your character getting stronger. But the progression in you as a player is unlike any game. You see yourself dying a lot but also learning and improving from your mistakes. It's amazing
i think Arthur meant to type in as a correction to your original post that you meant to say, "souls like games are special" if he did not, then he also forgot about Nioh 2
They clocked out after sekiro imo. Their need to make games "difficult" has far outpaced their abillity to innovate. While its no where near as blatant as sekiro elden ring is far of anything. Compare the open world to walking into the main city in witcher 3 lol , the same lifeless npcs you run back and forth to.. its just an inflated open world with enemies here and there. No populations or citezens. Like just step out of your bubble and really take a look at the game.. they went from covenants and rewards in ds3 to forced ganks if you want to invade. 10/10 tho!!! 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
It's funny that I died to the tree sentinel for like an hour on my first playthrough and then had to leave him because he was causing me too much trouble. And throughout my first playthrough I attributed all the progression I made to my OP build (bleed) and me being overleveled. But when I started another playthrough I beat the tree sentinel on my second try. That's when I realized just how much better I actually got.
This is the first game in 10 years that I played start to finish. But more than that I actually wanted to get off work and put the time in because I actually enjoyed it. 200 hours in and that was literally on my first playthrough. I haven't taken a no stone unturned approach to gaming in a long time. They said it best it really rekindled my love for gaming.
Remember, from software players still agree that bloodborne is still the best. So you gotta play that next. If you loved this, bloodborne will blow your fucking mind.
@@sebastiankrueger6209 I prefer Elden Ring to Bloodborne personally, but honestly to OP if you haven't played Bloodborne you're missing out. Open world bloodborne though would be just 11/10
@@sebastiankrueger6209 Nothing is good as Bloodborne. That game is out of this world. But Elden Ring is right behind it. Both of them are AMAZING MASTERPIECE THAT EVERY GAMER SHOULD AT LEAST TRY. Man i do hope Sony makes PS5 patch in 60 fps and 4K for Bloodborne. They do not have to change anything else and would play it again.
@@Christmas_Johan I could see that, but the old hunters DLC easily made bloodborne hard to beat. They took an already amazing story, and made it so much better.
This game is a true masterpiece. This game has everything unique bosses, great weapons, massive areas to explore, secret hidden pathways, a weapon what's a literal finger, warp portals two different regions across the map. Hell you can just walk around and find something in the world. Game of the got damn year.
The best thing about "souls like games" is that it reminds us of when we were kids and games were challenging. In mario you would die and have to start the level over and over again until you mastered it. In Zelda you had to explore and be analytical to finish a dungeon. These elements are put together in these games.
Yeah even when I was younger even before Souls Games were a thing, I use to go, "Wow, old games were hard." That was back when my first console was a SNES and I didn't really complete most of my library of games, but could knock out games on the GC back to back. Just felt so surreal to notice that.
Agreed. Where the only save slot, if you even had one, was at the beginning of the level. And this whole review could have been him just cussing and going "Fuck "Shit" the entire time and it would be the best and most accurate review for this game lol.
100% I was replaying ds1 the other day and it really gave me nostalgia for the OG tomb raider games. Emphasis on exploration and secrets and no real holding
I've stayed away from souls like games because I hate the dodge/parry mechanic. I tried playing DS1 because I heard how amazing the series was, but dodging felt so clunky. I spent a couple hours playing and couldn't consistently time dodges; sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't, but it didn't feel like I did anything differently. I love figuring out strategies for fights, it was my favorite part of raiding in MMOs, but I get so frustrated with reaction based mechanics that I just don't bother with games that use them. I play games to have fun, and I don't have fun bashing my face into a wall repeatedly. I'll leave these kinda games to you guys, while I watch the cool stuff and laugh at your pain.
yea its a culmination of fromsoft seing the DNA of its dungeoncrawl predecessors from ER interiors, and an amalgamation of the openworlds genre. for me was reminiscent of fonv how it let players choose its own adventure and how points of interest uses eye catching landmarks as visual direction (notably as soon as you went out of the starting cave and Liurnia, how overstimulating it is.)
Honestly this is the first time in a long time where a single game purchase is actually worth the price! Normally used to games overcharging and cutting half the game
This game does what so many others fail at, and it’s the “fun” factor. Side a game can have content that stretches on forever, but that doesn’t matter if it’s not at least “fun”. The only few games (that I know of) that have truly mastered this are red dead 2, bloodborne, ghost of Tsushima, god of war 2018, dark souls (1,2,3) and you guessed it elden ring. Elden ring truly is up there some of the best games ever made(At least in the open world category). I really do implore anyone to play this game, it truly is worth that 60$ price tag.
@zetta _ And that its world is full of Secrets and mysteries, i am replaying it and found a random stranger i never met before. This old black hippie that wanted me to get flowers. You should check the YT channel 'the strange man'
What you're saying here mirrors my first experience with dark souls 1, that sort of magical feeling of accomplishment and awe and its so nice to see other people experiencing it too. There is definitely a barrier but if you can push through you just get swept away by this amazing one of a kind experience.
True. I was lucky enough to have the same experience joe talks about here, 10 years ago. I'm happy elden ring allows so many more people feel that. It makes everyone see what gaming can be. But what elden ring manages to do is, allow dark souls to be more accessible to new players at the same time as remaining challenging enough for veteran players. Its a masterpiece.
I had a similar experience except its with Monster Hunter World. That feeling of mastering your weapons AND killing that monster you struggled for HOURS is unreal. Its a huuuuuuge boost of confidence and makes you want to play more. I've played so much (at least 2k hours) that now I'm pretty much a "God" in these games. I'm also the guy that joins your sessions and beat that monster you're struggling with. Solo. Regardless if you help me or not. I'll still beat it. I feel like a Police officer patrolling the players that needs help. LOL
I will be honest, I refunded the game after 1 hour of my playtime. It's my first souls like game, I heard it was hard so I was prepared to die a lot but the feeling of heaviness actually is a foreign concept to me. The action queing, the requirement of precise input, how to parry, how to camera lock, everything is kind of new to me and in the first hour, it was so miserable. I can't beat the heavy knight in the limgrave camp outside the stormveil castle. Honestly, it was a huge blow in my self confidence. I don't know if its because I'm new or my reflexes are failing me already. Then I rested, ate some food, ran around and went back to my room cause its my day off. Then I realized, I have nothing to play. I canceled my refund and tried again. I practiced on the one godrick soldier outside the first church near the sentinel. I died multiple times because I am trying to learn how to parry, how to precisely dodge and not spam any inputs. I am basically starting to learn how to walk because the games I used to play has abort system where if I am about to get hit, the dodge button will have priority and will cancel anything I am doing. 40 hours into the game, I finally beat Margrit. I felt thrilled and rewarded. I am playing bandit btw and dont know how to upgrade weapon so I dont have the extra damage, I dont have the range, the powerstance because I dont know that you can equip same weapon to get those stances. It was such a great feeling as if I won the entire game. Hoo boi was I wrong. I'm on journey 5 now trying whatever I see on YT that seems cool.
Almost ragequit the game :D Glad you pulled through and could experience this amazing journey. I think my favorite experience was with Patches trap. Since I played all prev. Dark Souls games I knew this was a trap, but I wanted to know what would happen. So I get teleported to that forest, die to the bear and beat him on my second try. Then I realised that I couldn't teleport, but didn't read the tooltip that I just needed to rest somewhere to be able to teleport again - so I expected that I have to trigger some kind of event. I wandered around and found a lift downwards, wanderes around a bit more and found a grace and rested. I looked at the map again and still couldn't teleport (this time because I was underground, but I thought it was still because of Patches trap). I died a lot down there, most of the enemies oneshotted me - so I was kinda suprised that Fromsoft would go so far with this trap and make it so difficult. I explored the place further and found a stonekey - so I assumed I need this stonekey to get to the exit. Sometime later I found the lift upward where you indeed needed a stonekey. This journey was tedious , nerve wracking, I felt really trapped and I loved it. Feeling completly overpowered, but struggeling through and finding a way out of this trap made me feel really accomplished - even though I kinda just explored.
Tbh the original souls games arent even that bad compared to elden ring. Go check'em out now they go on sale often! Like straight up they are overhyped in terms of difficulty, it wont be that bad
Not only was the game near perfect, but FromSoft should be applauded for delivering a masterpiece quality game during a time when devs are allowed to shovel half baked doodoo as AAA games. I’m so proud of them and appreciate all their hard work, esp Miyazaki.

We should not thank anybody, it's their job to release it finished. You know? Nobody should be praised for doing bare minimum. (Waiting for the simpletons who misunderstand this comment, thinking I'm shitting on the game)
The reason this was so good is because it has that old school feeling. A link to the past was incredible for this reason: some direction but still a massive open world where you can miss things. The bug from the dark world will wreck you but you don't have to take him in before getting new items/abilities
yeah, no, I can actually criticize almost every aspect of this game. Open world, graphics, art direction, combat mechanics, framerate, bosses -- I'll find something for each of those. Maybe people should eat less hype or get higher standards. Additionally, you should consider the fact that many players were Soulslike newcomers, which made the experience fresher for them than it actually was.

Love the review and I completely share your thoughts and reactions to the game. I am 54 years old and have been playing games since the early 80’s. There have been games over the years that have captured my imagination, sucked me into their world and helped me suspend disbelief with wonder and true excitement for what’s around the next corner. On my list of games that have done that for me over the years are Zork; the Ultima series, particularly Ultima VII; Baldurs Gate; Doom; Diablo. Elden Ring brought back that excitement for a video game that I haven’t had in many years. It has completely sucked me in. I’ve spent a whole weekend playing and have no idea where all the time went. My wife and daughter are complaining that they don’t have their husband and daddy anymore. I’ll be glad when I finish it so I can actually spend time with my family again…but I have heard about this thing called New Game +…may have to check it out :-) Bravo FromSoftware!

The demon souls remake I strongly reccomend if you haven't tried it before.
The wildest thing for me was being 200+ hours into my first playthrough and going on the subreddit and seeing people mention bosses and weapons that I hadn’t even heard of yet. It’s absolutely wild dude.

Best decision Joe made was to play the game alone, not on livestream. Because souls players can be very elitist and backseat gaming, it'll suck all the fun out of the game.
tbh I was not expecting AJ to enjoy this game so much but it's nice to see haha. :) You guys are so right: this is what video games SHOULD be! Complete and full of content on release. No micro transactions, lootboxes, NFTs, gambling or locked content. And because this game is so pure in form you easily forgive the small flaws it has. It truly is a legendary game that puts all other game developers and producers in check. It's also breaking multiple records in amount of players, stream time and views it's getting which proves that you can have immense success and make a lot of money by just giving players what they want instead of trying to screw and exploit them.

As a fan of the soulsborne series, it’s so cool to have new players jumping into Elden Ring. If you’re one of these new players to this kind of game, don’t listen to the negative players of this community trying to tell you how you should be playing, just do what you want to do, and have fun embracing and overcoming the challenge.

Been playing this game for 3 weeks and I still haven’t even completed my first run yet but even then this game is a blast to play and I was actually amazed at them giving it a 10/10, this game deserves it though, when there is so much good to out weigh the flaws and even when another flaw is put on to the flaw and the hood still keeps going up then you have a true legendary experience in your hands
Trust me savour your time. I've collected a lot of endings items and done a lot of sidequest and once I've finished the game I don't know what to do with my life.
Its a good game but nowhere close to a masterpiece let alone a 10/10 Its a solid 7 out of 10. As someone whos platinumed every soulsborne game besides demon souls on ps5 because i dont own a ps5. I can confidently say the game is way overhyped. I've put hundreds of hours into it between 4 different play throughs and got up to ng+4. Its issues are pretty bad. It also has the worst final boss out of every souls game including bloodborne and sekiro. Which both had amazing final bosses btw. The map is too massive. So they had to stretch it out and fill it with padding to make the illusion of having "tons" of content. When it's mostly recycled bosses and ememies and tons of samey feeling dungeons. Especially the late game. I think it does deserve game of the year though. But that's not saying much considering how much crap has come out in the past couple years.. also elden ring has some of the most lazy boss designs and gameplay boils down to roll spam and relying on s. We need to hold developers accountable and push aside obviously bias and fanboyisms. I love fromsoft games but elden ring deserves the criticism it gets. Because we should criticize and question the things we love.
Ever since it came out, my sister and I have played it together. And we're still not even through our first run, either xD We have way too much fun exploring around and killing whatever crosses our way :D

@@denglong7180 Jesus , fromsoft could make a game that discovers the cure for cancer and the Bloodborne fanboys will still talk about Bloodborne like it was the Godfather of games... Just say you like the Victorian aesthetic. Bloodborne is far from masterpiece status , but then again that's just my opinion.
@@Dan_Kanerva ^This, basically I will personally admit I love Bloodborne more than Elden Ring, but that's really just because of its aesthetic, music and lore preference. The only unique thing Bloodborne has that Elden Ring doesn't is Trick Weapons. Mechanics? Build variety? Freedom of exploration? Non-linearity? Ease of play? The technically better game- Elden Ring has it in spades. But we also have to acknowledge that Elden Ring is a culmination of everything FromSoft has learned from making their previous games- Dark Souls and Bloodborne walked, so Elden Ring could run
The story is just another part of the exploration, you can run through everything or stop and investigate every little side path. For me Elden Ring is that, the epitome of Exploration, even building your character and learning how to fight is an exploration. I LOVED it to its core, because that is what gaming is for me, exploring different universes (and this one is just SO rich and mindblowingly beautiful) and challenge myself while doing it. Ps: the MUSIC, such an incredible score, it makes me cry hearing it rn 1 year after getting to play this masterpiece. Can’t wait for the dlc.
Haven’t had this feeling from a game in awhile. As soon as you open that door to Limgrave your mind is blown by how big and vast the game is. I wish I could have that first run through feeling again, because it truly was amazing.

Can u imagine if it doesn't get a goty I won't be mad but I will be sad, this game is a phenomenon even if it seems like it's not for everyone it does gives a lot of options to be accessible, The only game that can compete this year is I think God of war Ragnarok if it isn't delayed to next year.

I feel like one of the reasons you have to give this game a 10/10 even if it has problems and even if it's not you're thing is that the developers get it. They see so what videogames should be involving into, what people want. This isn't just about all the live service crap and microtransactions. With the amount of technology these days, videogames have such potential, such endless capacity to truly be an experience unlike any other. This game is taking a big step into pushing the boundaries of what videogames are capable of with enough creativity.

@@Malignantt1 They won't. An average Assasin's Creed fan is happy with the turd they get and there's no reason for Ubi to change the formula as is. Changing things can completely "ruin" the experience for these fans.
I feel like this game is actually a RETURN to how video games used to be. It knows its a game, not some weird "realistic" gritty thing. There's exploration, there's mystery, there's an XP bar that's NOT FOR A BATTLEPASS. Your stats go up and the game get's a bit easier, or you can go to the next hard thing. It's a GAME with a map, an inventory, bosses, and lots of leveling. And it's all there when you buy it.

This game falls into the same category as Ocarina of Time, Skyrim, and Breath of the Wild. It's a game changer and will be talked about/played for years to come. It is legendary and just like OJ said "The pinnacle of gaming" in 2022. It's only 2 years into the decade and I'm pretty sure come 2030 this game will be brought up as one of the best of the decade. It's that good.
Are you a first time souls player? Because the game changer was Dark Souls (you can argue for Demon's Souls) and it was 10 years ago. ER is great and my GOTY, but it's dark souls in open world, nothing more.
@@madjoe8622 Exactly. It's got the same enemies too. I played DS1 but didn't really care for it. Not because it's not a good game, just don't like the depressing aesthetic and how decrepit it is.
I really like this game and have completed it five times, but boy does it have some issues. The reused assets in the game, enemies, dungeons and bosses are just horrendous and take away a lot of the things that make it feel unique. I also feel that the bosses are a bit too spammy with their infinite combos, input reading and hit detection. If ER was 80 % as big and the bosses had been tweaked just a hair and most bosses and areas were just used once this would be a true masterpiece. Now it is just great.
Not Skyrim, it's the most watered down """"RPG"""" I've ever seen, the game changer was that it was so accessible that it got many people into RPGs, not a bad game, but not nearly as great as people claim it to be, it's too shallow for that.
@cnmmd qiuoo This isn’t his first souls experience though… He was playing a fictional character in the beginning of this review as a skit, which is probably what made you think that he has never played a souls game before.
After suffering through the great FPS drought, who would've thought an Action RPG would bring me out of this funk. This game is amazing and has captivated me like no other game has in years.
Getting stuck in one genre is probably the best way to ruin gaming for yourself. I remember people used to play all kinds of games, because people were just happy to be playing a video game. Now everyone has to be a CoD player, or a Fortnite player, or a Souls player, or a TFT player, or a Forza player, or whatever. And everyone's fucking grumpy lol.
Lol, the montage of screaming fuck over and over and then eventually saying “I love this game.” Captures the experience perfectly. Pretty sure my neighbors think I’m losing my mind. 😆
Hands down one of the best games I've ever played. Simple as that. Glad Joe played it, enjoyed it and understands the game and its methods. ER is so intuitive just like bloodborne and other souls games. Not all the hardcore players are complete douche bags. I've been playing these games for years since demon souls but I'm just happy to see new players loving souls games. These are games for all gamers.

Lol
Reading this comment while he's cussing and screaming at the game lmao
"Don't say you're bad you just started." That supporitve comment from OJ is such an important thing to take to heart when you're playing the game and the kind of support you should give someone playing this game.
honestly every person who started elden ring as their first souls game need to hear that
death is not mean you're bad at this games death is the core gameplay mechanic in elden ring
This applies to other fields in life as well.
Every Souls game is like that though lol. It gets easier the further you get.

I went afk outside redmane castle like two days ago. Id just beaten those two big wolves, theres no enemies at ALL outside the castle, i decide to go make some food and come back after like 15 mins and see one of those damn mud piles kill me as im grabbing the controller. Im like wtf!
@@Stunsify bro I swear it always happens just in time for me to see but not prevent it lol

@Captain Torrent sweden. Most new games around here cost $60 some $70. But ER was $50 at release, even though it is easily worth $100. Insane.
It’s proof for sure but EA is making millions if not billions from copy and pasting sports games and giving it a new title every year, it’ll most likely keep going sadly until people stop buying their games.
@Captain Torrent Australia most new releases are sold at 60 or 70 dollars. Without preorder
@Stacey Bowtell Mine works fine on my laptop. Don't play it on a keyboard. Trust me.
But then they would have to put in effort and create interesting gameplay loops.. which takes a piloshophical take beyond greed is good.
I think Elden Ring actually being a complete product is enough to warrant Game of the Year.

Years of shitty games will do that to a man
Welcome to the FromSoft fans community. Cheers!
Iam 36, and you right, this game made me feel like a kid again! its a rare gem this one!
You should try demons souls, the dark souls games and bloodborne they’re even better.
I actually can't wait for DLCs to this! And I haven't even finished my first run. I want more already!! x3
It is not really "complete". It is clear that From Software is going to do something more with all those coliseums... and there are some relatively empty areas that might be reused in future DLC. But I see what you mean. If this is all that we get, it is (way) more than enough.
complete games are better and preferred
though genshin is still a fantastic game, the weapon banner is just awful/predatory
And I’d be willing to bet that if FromSoft does end up releasing DLC, it’s going to be packed with content and you’re going to get a fantastic experience for your money. Bloodborne’s DLC is the best single player DLC I’ve ever played.

I have this exact same feel with my brother, its like 2 entirely separate games with all the random shit we trip across

Hearing Joe's takes now compared to the first stream are so refreshing. I'm glad he actually gave it a chance .
Best decision Joe made was to play the game off-stream. The souls elitists will ruin any fun from a souls stream with their backseat gaming and insulting the streamer for not "gitting gud".

And Tons of ways to die 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The best thing about "souls like games" is that it reminds us of when we were kids and games were challenging. In mario you would die and have to start the level over and over again until you mastered it. In Zelda you had to explore and be analytical to finish a dungeon. These elements are put together in these games.
OG Mario was even harder than that. Die 3 times and you'd be restarting the whole damn game, lol.
Elden Ring really gave me the old gaming feeling while most new TripleA games just feel like you are watching an semi interactable movie
Gave me the same thing. I felt the same as what I felt when playing my first Might & Magic game decades ago.
@Vandole Yes, a bit like Dark Souls 1. The second part was less good. Still both were great games.
Nah all I felt was boredom and uninstalled

yea its a culmination of fromsoft seing the DNA of its dungeoncrawl predecessors from ER interiors, and an amalgamation of the openworlds genre. for me was reminiscent of fonv how it let players choose its own adventure and how points of interest uses eye catching landmarks as visual direction (notably as soon as you went out of the starting cave and Liurnia, how overstimulating it is.)
I would add in Doom Eternal to that list

There is definitely a barrier but if you can push through you just get swept away by this amazing one of a kind experience.
True. I was lucky enough to have the same experience joe talks about here, 10 years ago. I'm happy elden ring allows so many more people feel that. It makes everyone see what gaming can be. But what elden ring manages to do is, allow dark souls to be more accessible to new players at the same time as remaining challenging enough for veteran players. Its a masterpiece.
Agreed, I have loved getting to see sooo many friends get their first Souls experience and feel all the same things that we felt.
Facts once I beat the gargoyles in ds1 I was hooked

Its a solid 7 out of 10.
And we're still not even through our first run, either xD
We have way too much fun exploring around and killing whatever crosses our way :D
@@cosmicbilly This game is prolly the only game to come out in a long time for $60 and you get a shit tone of content and no micro transactions, this game deserves to make money from the apparent dlc they are making and everyone’s point of view towards the game is different, plus I’ve heard people say that this game has to much content
23:25 “okay let’s talk criticisms” *continues to talk about how good the game is*
This is the indicator of how much of a masterpiece this game actually is.
There will still quite a lot of bad things about it though ?
It's a good game. Although it's no where near Bloodborne.
@@Dan_Kanerva ^This, basically
I will personally admit I love Bloodborne more than Elden Ring, but that's really just because of its aesthetic, music and lore preference.
@@brucewayne8550 i would love if Elden Ring had trick weapons and the ability to deflect and dodge like Sekiro... damn
I wish I could have that first run through feeling again, because it truly was amazing.
then when the map expands again and again, that's when you realize the vastness of the lands between
@b7 You just gotta keep at it. Reflect often.
Even now I sometimes stop and just become starstruck at how beautiful and massive the game is… and the music
The best funniest opening scene ever! 1:00
Then you realized bosses are regular enemies and repeated 10x each
He managed to get through it even when everyone doubted him.
really, proof?
Alex sure. Joe and OJ, I doubt it.
Haven't seen you guys giving a game a 10 in a while and seeing you guys genuinely happy playing this makes us fans glad as well. Definitely a GOTY for 2022
Out
2022 is not over yet, but Elden Ring is a serious candidate for GOTY 2022.
Can u imagine if it doesn't get a goty I won't be mad but I will be sad, this game is a phenomenon even if it seems like it's not for everyone it does gives a lot of options to be accessible, The only game that can compete this year is I think God of war Ragnarok if it isn't delayed to next year.
Yo angry man I think after Altus plateau if ur lvl 75 + nothing's gonna kill u ~ I killed 2 tree sentinels will Moonveil sword without using flasks and i of course i had my spirit minions to attention divert the fuckk outta them ! Nothing i faced in ALTUS PLATEAU was ever hard ~
@@SpadeApeiron well that's why lol moonveil
Finally got the platinum on PS5. Only took me 430 hours. I tried not to look anything up the first playthrough. There's so many secrets in this game it's impossible not to miss something.
This game is taking a big step into pushing the boundaries of what videogames are capable of with enough creativity.
in the darkest night the most insignificant flame turns into a raging fire
elden ring would never had so much success if the whole videogame industry realized this truth, and for that i am thankful
for the tiny flame wouldnt be recognized in a blaze
I hope this forces other devs to put more effort into their games instead of doing the bare minimum so they can pump out sequel after sequel
Congrats to Joe for trying out and potentially finishing his first Souls game! Hopefully he gets to try out more of them in the future. This game is undoubtedly a game of the year contender for sure.
It's already won .... there's no way to top it unless some company has been working on a project completely hidden for around a decade
@@chrisbellville6957 lol
Dude it's way to early to say that.
@@jacobmcmahan109 but it is gonna be one of the games that will b used as a meter/ point of comparisons for other games to come. It may not be THE game of the decade but man if it isn’t on the list I might consider rioting.
@Matt Ragan 1991 you have way too much hope for Bethesda ngl
oh yeah, that Bethesda game that we have BARELY see a CGI tráiler...
the game developers must be feeling really proud right now. standing ovation for their magnificent effort to get a 10/10 from Joe show 👏
This game falls into the same category as Ocarina of Time, Skyrim, and Breath of the Wild. It's a game changer and will be talked about/played for years to come. It is legendary and just like OJ said "The pinnacle of gaming" in 2022. It's only 2 years into the decade and I'm pretty sure come 2030 this game will be brought up as one of the best of the decade. It's that good.
Skyrim maybe but def not nearly as polished or as fun as Ocarina or BOTW. It doesn't even have widescreen! SMH..
Love Joe’s cat’s reaction. “The human is being stupid again, I’m out.”
Hooman
@cnmmd qiuoo
This isn’t his first souls experience though… He was playing a fictional character in the beginning of this review as a skit, which is probably what made you think that he has never played a souls game before.
"So, you wanna pet me?"
"Put these foolish ambitions to rest"
After suffering through the great FPS drought, who would've thought an Action RPG would bring me out of this funk. This game is amazing and has captivated me like no other game has in years.
@@saladfrog Same, I was on the brink of selling my PS4, then I discovered Bloodborne. I've been hooked on since.
And everyone's fucking grumpy lol.
best game i played in 30 years of playing games
@@mars188 Yep, 35 years for me. This game is like a gamer dream that came true.. Not sure if i'll be able to play something else after...!!!
@@MidnightatMidian good points. i have over 200 hrs 3rd play-through still going
