Got stung last week in three places 1 on the knee, one on the hand and one got me right on the lip😱 everything' swolled up good. I looked like Quasimodo and when I tryed to take a sip of my beer it just dribbled out on me 🤣🤣
I got a pretty low grade tractor supply brush cutter about 4 years ago, other than I had to beef up the deck with some 1/4 inch flatbar along the bottom and the rear to keep the .12ga deck from getting bent up. And other than that it’s been a good one, we keep it inside and we had to repaint it this year but for what it cost I think it was fair enough. Just my experience.
Good Point about the tractor package. I almost went for one but found a used trailer for sale that was a lot cheaper than a new one. And put the money I saved into heavy duty implements. By far best decision I made
Good lessons. I bought a lightweight rotary cutter and the top rusted out fast. Homestead makes a good-looking rotary cutter. The concrete looks good in the background. The stump jumper is a big deal on the bigger cutter.

Excellent advice Hank! 👍 Starting your mower at lower engine speed is an excellent tip ....I always do that myself. It also saves your clutch! (and clutches are EXPENSIVE and time consuming to replace) Also the difference between a finish mower and bush hog is that finish mowers use belts and pulleys that can overheat in thick brush, bush hogs are direct drive and better able to handle the rough and thick brush. I overheated a finish mower in some thick grass once and it was scary! It started smoking and smelling of burnt rubber...I had to do an emergency shut down.
Great video. I just picked up a IH 300 Utility with a fast hitch and I am trying to find a brush hog for it but they're all 3 point. Any advice or any recommendations on something I could get?
I mow the row middles in my vineyard. I’ve removed “all” of the rocks, sticks, etc. so all I’m cutting is 2’ high alfalfa down to 6”. My Mahindra (Paladin) standard duty rotary cutter has been doing fine for 10 years. Tractor is 26 hp. So if you’re never going to mow anything tougher than that, a standard duty works great. If I wanted to do some actual brush cutting, I’d borrow my neighbor’s 50 hp tractor and use his monster brush hog!
Bush Hog is a brand name & is heavy duty, shear pins are grade # 2 so as to break before you damage unit. You have an rotary mower which is light to moderate duty. You failed to mention Gearbox horsepower should be substantially more horse power than tractor horse power to insure they are compatible for long lasting durability. Just sharing 64 years of experience.
I cannot emphasise enough the recommendation for a driveline protection device. Having blown the gearbox input shaft off of a wessex scrubmaster at full power, you only need to see that once!
Great info hank I got given a 6ft brush cutter from my grampa that he had for 15 years or so I just re enforced it had no major issue but I only cut big fields where I know what in them so the price was right but when it need replaced I consider a hd model but I run a 6ft cutter on ck 2610 so the cutter a lil big but it works just gotta go slower in some tasks
Ok I've done a lot of brush cutting, from small tractors with a 4ft cutter to batwings to skidsteer mulching! I've always wondered why not 1 company, at least not that I've found, offers a rotary cutter with more than 2 blades, the skid steer mowers have 3-4 blades and to me they have a cleaner smoother cut!
Well I feel a little dumb now. Ive got a JD 3043D paired with a Frontier rc2072 bush hog. Ive been running over anything from 3 inch brush to 1/2inch brush and it does not care! Its got the stump jumper and slip clutch but I noticed the rear of the mower by the wheel bends super easy. ive actually damaged it numerous time and have either had to cut it off or bend back to shape. I did some research and found that its a light duty!! Oops! But its beyond surprised me on what its capable of doing. later next year ive got plans to beef up the sides with 1/4 plate to replace the pre existing (I think) 1/8th inch steel. Glad I found this video to show me some of the little things that I missed out on. Thank you!
I pieced together a light duty frame 5ft cutter and just recently I got it fixed up with a new pto shaft a new stump jumper new blades and rewelded the 3pt to be quick hitch capability and then I wound up with a bigger tractor and the cutter was too small to cover my tires so my wife got me a new 6ft landpride cutter for my birthday. The 5fter works great but I know it won't last many years mowing pasture with all kinds of stuff. I love that new landpride has rolled edges and weighs 800lbs. I'm gonna for sure get some good years out of it.
Why flail (did I spell that right?) or rotary? I had a factory tour of an American made flail mower about 35 years ago. That company sold lots of flail mowers to the highway maintenance folks. They explained how durable a flail mower was because you just couldn't hurt it and if you did, you just replace one or more of the small impact parts (don't remember what they were called). Knowing nothing then and just a tiny bit more than nothing now, that made and makes sense to me.
I agree to buying a heavier cutter. At the last minute I decided to spend the extra on my JD mx5. I have put saplings the size of my wrist through it. Not a ding or dent at all on it afterwards. But that little 5 footer is 830lbs. ( heavy for a 5 ft.)
what would be a good used brand for a 30hp tractor that I can get parts for without paying a high price? I am just looking for a used one. thanks for any help.
Hank, how often do you slip the clutch plates on your cutter (recommed maintence) & how difficult is it to do? This regular maintence is why I would probably buy the shearbolt cutter. Thanks
I got a standard and regretted it. That Homestead Pinnacle Series will be my next bush hog. Great video Hank! BTW, did you know I was the Elvis Fan of the Week? My boy my boy ⚡️
Hi Hank how are you? why you use a chain for top link is ifyou go over very un evan groung the tractor and slasher are ridge..So the slasher [aussie for bush hog] if you go over real unevan ground it will bend the stays from you top of the hitch down to the deck, if you could put hydraulic top link in float np, when you got a sold 3 rd link those stays from top of hitch to deck are replaced with chains where the hitch attaches to slasher deck pivot there take Hank
Just wondering what he thinks of King Kutter bushhogs. Have a four-footer on a subcompact tractor. It's been through the gauntlet and still in good shape. Standard or commercial?
King Kutter are ok. There are only a few brands that I don't personally like and it's mainly because of the business practices, not so much the quality of the implement.
Solid Video Hank! Watched this video with this dude badmouthing bush-hogs compared to his chain mower.... Can't stant videos that present generalities... Who knows WHAT bush-hog he was talking about... Anyway, you present a lot of valuable facts and tips that are helpful if you're looking to get one. Lots of specifics and facts... great stuff. NO RIDERS!! About a year ago, locally to me, a person was brush hogging grass out of a field. Open operators station tractor. Had a small child riding along and the child fell off between the tractor and brush hog while it was in operation. The operator could NOT get the tractor stopped in time and ran over the child with the brush hog running full speed.
Very sad and happens way more than it should. Old farmer here in my area suffered a terrible death some years back. Had the bush hog spinning and for an unknown reason stepped onto the rusty deck to do something. Fell through and you can imagine the rest. Horrific way to go.

Hey hank got a question for you im looking for my very first tractor i know a few diffrent kinds id like to own looking for something oldschool to slowly work on and restore but not sure how to go about finding what im lookin for
You need to check your breather on top of your brush hog, it looks like a pipe plug (not a breather), which will force oil out of the gearbox each time the brush hog is used. Then you can make a video on replacing a brush hog gearbox.
Thanks for the info, Hank. It was almost like you were directly talking to ME! :) Have you been watching my brush hog videos? :D So question on that 2500 RPM. I have been running mine at 2000 RPM. I guess that is the PTO 2nd 540E. what is the difference between 540 and 540E?
A zero turn is great for more limited acerage. I have 14 acres to mow and cannot do it in one day as I get too beat up. A tractor can do it much more comfortably, faster if you get wider equipment, can do steeper hills more safely. Zero turn is the only thing to use in tight spaces (e.g., small glades in the woods). Zero turns are great on smooth fields but ruts, rocks, and fire ant hills bounce you alot at high speed. Also zero turns are dangerous if something can grap the caster wheels like a rut, big vine, or rose/blackberry cane. Love my zero turn but like any equipment it has limitations
Great video Hank. I am in the market for my first tractor. I was set on a Mahindra after watching your videos. However, I noticed you switched to Branson. Any thoughts on the differences? why a Mahindra and why a Branson? Much appreciated.
Man, just bought a new Kubota L2501HST, delivered 2 weeks ago. Pulled my 25+ year old Howse bush hog out of the brush where it’s been sitting a couple years. Looks like it’s been shot through with buck shot, I just couldn’t hook that rusty old piece of crap to my new baby. Ordered a 60” JBar premium with 75hp gearbox upgrade, 7 gauge steel & slip clutch in orange (650#), picking it up Saturday morning. Mowing 4th of July weekend!
A good brush hog will have high side rails, not like the one in this video.. The only way a slip clutch is better then a shear bolt is, if it's properly maintained and adjusted.
Was considering a hydraulic top link for my tractor. Do you have any issues with the pto shaft length when backing over a road bank with your rotary cutter and extending it for better reach?
I firmly believe if all the world leaders could spend a couple hours in a cab tractor doing some pasture mowing we could have world peace. It is definitely calming, well unless you have a break down but we won't go there now.
Ummmm,OK. Bush hogs are built to different levels of duty. Real bush hog will have a massive gear box usually 80 HP or higher. Deck and sides will be .125" or thicker. Blades will cut grass just fine: if sharp. Gear box mount: if bolted to the deck itself: run away. Good ones will have at least a C channel mounting plate for the gear box. Best is solid steel .5" or greater. My Bush Hog brand 6' will cut 5-6 inch butt saplings and trees. If my JD 1250 will run it down the Bush Hog will chew it to bits. Always forgotten and never done is greasing the 2 piece PTO shaft. Separate the 2 pieces and slather on some good grease before use then grease everything else. Next forgotten is the gear box oil level. When the lower seals go out you probably won't see it. Check oil level before every use.Cheap ones use shear bolts: good ones use a slip clutch. When buying new or used the visual test can tell you a lot: if it looks cheaply made,it is.
