Because Teruteru has a reputation in game of drugging his food. In DR2, in his final Free Time, he drugs Hajime and he's also mentioned to do so in Danganronpa: Zero. He also admits to trying it in "Ultimate Summer Camp". So it's natural that Maki would be careful of him trying to drug her.
Can I just point out how grateful I am that maki and kaito didn’t interact much in this? I actually enjoy and like makis character when ever kaito isn’t around, like she goes from being a 3 dimensional character that feels semi realistic whenever kaito isn’t around, but when he is around she becomes this stupid 2 dimensional trash bin character 😬 (not to mention chapter 5 of v3 💀
I agree with you, I feel like in the OG game her character became WAY to centered around her romance with Kaito that she didn’t have enough time to properly build up any meaningful connections with anyone beside Kaito and Shuichi(who she tried to sacrifice with little to no remorse to again avenge Kaito.) I just felt like the romance was forced, and made Maki into a 1 dimensional tsundere.
