In this video, we will walk around the Zitadelle Spandau (Citadelle Spandaue) in Berlin, Germany. Spandau only became part of the state of Berlin in 1920. The Spandau Citadel is one of the most important and best-preserved fortress buildings from the High Renaissance. The oldest building in Berlin located there is the Juliusturm, Spandau's landmark. The Spandau Citadel is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in all of Europe - and strolling across the grounds inside, history seems to come alive! The Juliusturm tower, the proof of the thirteenth-century castle that originally stands here and today. The tower was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Its main task was the defense of the castle built by the Brandenburg margraves on this site. When the citadel was built in the 16th century, it was decided to keep the Julius Tower and Palas as part of the old castle and integrate them into the fortress. This is considered the oldest building in Berlin with 34.6 meters high, the signature sight of Spandau district. By the way, only in 1920 that Spandau became part of Berlin. We can climb to the 153 steps to the top level of the Juliusturm will be rewarded with an impressive view, yet because the museum office is closed, we cannot do so.
The vault door through which visitors enter the tower reminds us that the so-called Reich War Treasure was stored behind the 3.60 meter thick walls after the Franco-German War of 1870/71. Climbing the tower is possible during the opening hours of the citadel as part of the entrance fee 365 days a year. Except for black ice and storms!
Museums, archives and galleries at the Spandau Citadel
The site of the citadel is now home to various museums, archives and galleries. The Spandau City History Museum gives visitors a far-reaching insight into the history of the district, which only joined the capital in 1920 and is still sometimes referred to as "Spandau near Berlin". In the commandant's house, on the other hand, everything revolves around the history of the citadel and castle. A historical weapon collection with cannons, rifles, and other artillery in the parade hall reminds of the military history of Spandau. In the 18th century, the district was considered to be the armory of Prussia.
Today, Spandau Citadel is famous for its open-air concerts during the Citadel Music Festival. Scenes from the 1985 action film Gotcha! were filmed at and around Spandau Citadel. This June 2021, Lionel Ritchie is coming for his 2021 performance.
