Unmanned stores like this gyoza shop have been increasingly popular as a result of COVID in Japan. Restaurants are trying to find solutions to stay in business. In these stores, the customer doesn't have to interact with anyone!! What do you think of this concept?

My mom used to put a plate directly on top of the cooked gyoza in the pan, then flip over. Easy plating! I'm so jealous you can just go buy them so inexpensively!

Hi! I'm going to Iwakuni for a second time in April. What would you recommend/recommended itinerary for a 1 day and 1 night trip?
i think this is a really cool idea but I'm also a little unsure about how well it would work in the US. Though I have seen some self service stuff in California but only out in the country. On my way to Point Reyes once my mom and I found an adorable self service egg and honey stop that also had a candy machine full a food you could give to the chickens.
Is cash the preferred payment in Japan? I feel like in the states I usually pay with my debit card.
We've got a self serve place opening up at work (US). It won't be manned. I think because of the location it will work.

Is this a joke or sponsored by this gyoza place? I live in Toronto, Canada, and there is no way in Hell that this is real from my perspective. If in Toronto in this situation, the merchandize will be all stolen within a few minutes, the money box is destroyed and stolen, and the security camera is broken and stolen, AND the store will be heavily vandalized. It is hard to believe that something like this exists.

Here in California there is a company now that spreading that sells hot drinks vending machines. Now they do unman mini convenience stores within buildings. I first saw it at my summer warehouse job and now at my college and they even have fresh fruit! They also have cameras that do work. I also believe it is also the location, level trust and habit that probably comes from doing self check out and COVID (not wanting to talk to people). Also a new sub!!!
There are places in ilocos Philippines that don’t have employee and is just pay yourself and take you bought.
We are moving there soon and can’t wait to go check this out. I don’t think you mentioned if there were any other options? It’s just one type of gyoza? Which I’m assuming is pork gyoza? My husband and I are vegetarian and I’m trying to find any place we might be able to eat at. Lol. I know it’s going to be hard in Japan.
Lately in Denmark, there´s been a trend of unmanned stores - expecially in very small towns, that are a bit far from a larger city and where there would be no grounds for having an entire supermarket. It´s like a metal containor with glass on the one long-side.
You have to either acces though using a QR-code and signing up with your phone number or use an app with a special "secure app" that is hooked up to your social securitynumber (we use it to login to banks, government sites, etc. too) - and then you scan and pay like in a self-service checkoutcounter at the supermarket.
So it´s convenient and great for very rural areas, but it´s not to the degree of trust as this is :)

I've been to small towns in the Pacific Northwest of the states that has something similar to this. The places I've been to either sold flowers, fruits, or foods like pies. You pretty much grab and go, and place cash in a box. The set up is almost like this with fridges and menu prices, but it's much smaller space. It's pretty much built as a trust system. But I do wish there were gyoza here in the states like the one you visited!

It still surprises me when Japanese want to save a table, they would leave their stuff there so no one takes that table. I know Japanese can be trusted but I mean not ALL Japanese can be trusted. I’ve been here for 7 years and I still can’t do that lol. I was raised in the states where Americans will steal anything. That’ll never leave my mind. 🤣🤣🤣

From what I have read... Unmanned places work in Japan because they actually care for the homeless there. Also, the culture does not tolerate "entitlement" in general. You steal, destroy and get caught... you get harsh punishment.

We have these all in Montana for farm co-ops sell things. Cute little buildings and they sell eggs, veggies, flowers, a few arts and crafts, etc. You write what you buy on a piece of paper and there’s even cash boxes to make change.
Of course we have something like this in America, except you can only buy camping firewood or roadside corn 🤣
There is one like that in Batanes, Philippines called Honesty Store.

Caitlin, there are a LOT of the gyoza unstaffed shops around now and I think they are getting more popular. I wonder about the economics of a shop v a vending machine, as in all the videos I have seen of these shops, there are banks of freezers containing product, so they seem VERY popular (and bloody cheap, too!) so a vending machine probably doesn't have the capacity to store enough product. ALSO, may I call you out for not showing Gus-Gus? We heard his nails on the floor! 🙂
Definitely wouldn’t work in the U.S. Stores in the U.S. are barely surviving with employees around.
Interesting, I wouldn’t have ever thought about putting Togarashi in the gyoza tare. I’ll have to try that next time.
This is so cool. There’s one near Tanukikoji 7 in Sapporo. I used to love getting them. I lived there and enjoyed having them many nights!!

We have a few unmanned food stores in Norway which is also 24-hours open. Its so nice 🙂
