Wicked Broadway (Reviewer Reels)
2003
Idina Menzel (Elphaba)
Kristen Chenoweth (Glinda)
Seeing the actresses from the original play making a cameo in the film was truly captivating.
I just thought they were invited for the premier. I was litterally gagged when I saw them T.T
It was such a nice Easter egg to see.
I was grabbing my boyfriends hand so hard when I saw them this movie was truly special
Best part of the whole movie
who did they play?
How I WISH they would release the other proshot of this that we saw in the Broadway documentary. It baffles me since all of the other proshots from that footage have been released.
me too! who knows, they'll probably make us wait until the show closes at this point lmao
@@legallywickedi only saw the full version of the show from youtube, i was about to buy the ticket for Seattle show but i have to go home. I wish they released the first version in DVD as well.
Do you have a link to the documentary?
I'd pay so much money to get my hands on the proshot!! Sadly all we get a small clips and bootlegs :(

I see such a big parallel with Elsa singing Let It Go. If I had a nickel for every time Idina Menzel played an ostracized character with strange powers coming from "nowhere", I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's really cool that it happened twice
Lol, the line makes me think of Spongebob: "Patrick, if I had a dollar for every brain you don't have, I'd have one dollar!"
@@phousefilmsThe two nickels thing is actually a Phineas and Ferb reference/meme.
Trueee
You forgot that they both have names that start with an "E" and end in an "a".
@@coletteb.8889 true xD
there is something so raw about idina's acting & facial expressions that will always set her apart from the other elphabas - it's not just about singing the song beautifully but making us FEEL elphaba's fear and her attempt to come across as threatening as she is simultaneously empowering herself with every word
That's why I will always be her fan. She sings in the way that make us feel the character can both be strong and vulnerable at the same time since the character is becoming a public enemy. It's not about singing perfectly.
ㄹㅇ
Cynthia did a beautiful job as well.
@@dnicole4236 I mean yeah, but we’re not talking about Cynthia though are we?
This is what i wish many others understood about musicals or theater or...any singing in general. when you are telling a story through song, you really need to feel the song. You can sense, feel, and embody a raw power when people perform well. That's why Idina's and Kristen's performances, will ALWAYS set them apart from others. Why original cast members usually are just a world set apart from others who follow no matter how well they do. Or how Lea Solanga's performances are always a different level (and many other big performers)
Musicals are about transformation through song. Its not just about the talent or voice or performance. In the moment you need to truly be moved by voice alone because the character's emotion has reached you.
The world is changing and so many ppl dont feel this anymore with 10000 remakes and hurried schedules, they're taking away the feeljngs that are worked through production.
Soon enough, this level of acting will disappear. I hope im wrong about that tho
Just saw the Movie today,
While the Original Musical still remains a Masterpiece
The Movie did amazingly in capturing the Heart of the Original
Same here, it was amazing!
I loved the musical as a kid, and the movie is a fantastic retelling. It did the original justice and then some.
Well I was having goosebumps and I was a bit teary when I watched this part of the movie.
Agreed!
@@kamuymamushi5877 it was one of the best movie adaptations of a stage musical, up there with Little Shop of Horrors.
Oh what I wouldn’t give to have been able to see this at least ONCE live 😢 Idina at her peak

I saw this with her in London and I've never seen a performer who had the audience so firmly in the palm of her hand before or since.

It is a crime that we will never have a full Pro Shoot of the OBC. Idina's acting will forever be unmatched, and Kirsten is *perfection*. Love this whole cast to pieces
Hate that it's in a vault somewhere and we'll never see it
no one can match them

@@hahurrhowdy1843 Arianna did great tbh
Agreed. As someone who lives on the West Coast, my opportunity to see Broadway shows is very limited, so I have to get my fix from pro shoots.
Idina Menzel's performance as Elphaba brings tears to my eyes. I really wish they could release this on dvd/blu ray so badly.
Exactly. They should do this!
I saw the original cast in 2003 as a itty bitty five year old and even got to meet the cast afterwards after an unfortunate circumstance! As a five year old this show can be very scary (the tin man transformation, the dragon, the wizard head and of course-the flying monkeys) Five year old me was going strong up until the monkeys flew in and I remember as they flew and ran about the aisles, one grabbed the back of my chair as he was going down the aisle and scared me so bad that I bolted out of the theatre screaming. My mom ran after me and tried to console me in the lobby but I wouldn't calm down-I was TERRIFIED. A worker from the theatre came to check on us and saw how upset I was. The person actually told someone in the crew backstage and word got around and the next thing I know the show is over and I am meeting Kristen, Idina and one of the flying monkey actors backstage! The monkey actor was kind enough to take off their makeup and costume to show me they weren't real and it was just a human underneath. While I didn't really see the entire show I remember how kind and amazing the cast and crew were to us most and truly love this musical with all my heart!
I find this story incredibly hard to believe when the monkeys nor any other character have ever come up through the aisles on Broadway in the show’s 20 year history, in addition to the fact that the flying monkeys use masks, not makeup. They do fly over the audience at one point if that’s what you mean?
@ this was the first year it was on stage so things may have changed! If you watch any slime videos from the first year to now there are changes! all I know is I remember the monkeys terrifying five year old me and I didn’t see the whole show but I got to meet the cast after.
@ There’s videos of the show in previews uploaded right now where you can’t spot that. No one in the cast has ever mentioned it.

7:08 that “I hope you’re happy” was such a brilliant decision. It sounds so cool!
Best part of the whole song
I actually saw this in the theater and it was a privileged witness and there was so much applause that I think the city heard it outside
When I saw this, nearly 20 years ago, I never understood how people would jump out of their seats to applaud. I thought nothing could ever be that good to have people react like that. It wasn’t until I saw this performance that I realized I had jumped out of my seat to applaud. A core memory for sure.

This is never getting old. I went to a movie today, and saw the preview for Wicked, the movie, and needed to watch this the second I came home, for the millionth time. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are forever these characters, but I can't wait to see the movie with my niece, it's time a new generation was let in on this secret.

this performance gives me chills. I never seen Wicked, but I never knew just how scary Glinda was, she needed to learn to be as brave as Elphaba, now she'll see the effects of her decisions.
Idina and Kristin's chemistry, vocals, and emotion in 'Defying Gravity'-with Idina's powerhouse belt and Kristin's crystal-clear voice-are pure magic. ✨ Cynthia and Ariana brought their own magic, but this original duo is just timeless. Legends will always be legends! 💚💗
Idina was the one who made them change it to go up on the now iconic "So if you care to find me" climax, it used to be that it was sung the same way as "Something has changed within me"
This always makes me cry. I really love Idina’s Elphie tries to be “wicked”. So sad that we have no full recorded show!!!
Wow. I am enamoured by Idina's voice. She has incredible control. I aspire to sing like her one day.
I just saw this on Broadway last week, and while I mean no disrespect to the current cast, it couldn't even come close to this. I feel 1000 times more emotion from this video than seeing it live with that cast.
The original is the best
This was a 100% showstopper. She crushed it
I think the 2024 film should’ve been 2d animated… Perfect for that format. Instead we have something looking like another generic remake & that may throw off general fans
@@fredfishers2656But Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are both incredible singers so I’m praying it will be amazing!

I lost my sense of reality while watching this video. Really. I'm usually aware of what's happening around me but oh my goodness, the talent of Idina is a force of nature. I found myself staring directly at her and how I felt every emotion that Elphaba had. Pure brilliance.

This is always one of my favorite songs for someone to do at karaoke, especially at bars where the theater folk hang out. It's such a powerful song, and while people often sing along at karaoke, I love to join in as the chorus. There's a layer of fun offering up "So we've got to bring her down" to an Elphaba on her own little stage.

Idina created the role, deservedly so. The one in the movie is also great, but I feel Idina embodies Elphaba better.
I relate more to her rendition...angry and defiant.
The movie one's rendition is more sad, and just making realizations, and acting on them.

Elphie, listen to me, just say you're sorry
You can still be with the wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted (I know)
But I don't want it
No, I can't want it anymore
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap
It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
Can't I make you understand
You're having delusions of grandeur?
I'm through accepting limits
'Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change, but 'til I try, I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love, I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
Glinda, come with me
Think of what we could do, together
Unlimited
Together, we're unlimited
Together, we'll be the greatest team there's ever been
Glinda, dreams the way we planned 'em
If we work in tandem
There's no fight we cannot win
Just you and I, defying gravity
With you and I defying gravity
They'll never bring us down
Well, are you coming?
I hope you're happy
Now that you're choosing this (you too)
I hope it brings you bliss
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend
So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately, "Everyone deserves the chance to fly"
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me, take a message back from me
Tell them how I am defying gravity
I'm flying high, defying gravity
And soon, I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down
I hope you're happy (look at her, she's wicked, get her)
Bring me down! (No one mourns the wicked, so we've got to bring her)
Oh! (Down)
This is the origin of Elphaba 💚
My mind is blown! Wow!
