I'm gassing for an ME-90 simply because I need less menus in my life in general - and I'm not even a chef. I also prefer fewer choices when it comes to the number of amps or effects available. I'm more focused on playing when all those options simply aren't there. Less is more for me in this case. Great video, John. Thanks 😊

I sold my Headrush Gigboard because I found myself fiddling more than playing.
I got my ME-70 back in college by going into GC, went up to my fav chick with, “I created a nightmare of a pedalboard and need something ADHD friendly…”
Without a word, she walked a few feet, grabbed the ME-70 and said, “$300…thank me later.” I actually used it that night for our gig and never played better.

Hi I had a GX-100 and currently have the ME-90. Both are great sounding units and the touchscreen on GX-100 rocks. However getting good tones out of ME-90 is so simple and hassle-free and I can actually practice rather than manically going into menus. Both great units. ME-90 is dumb simple and GX-100 is more complex and powerful

I've been watching a lot of youtube videos to see if the me-90 is really for me. The knob usability is suuuuch a great selling point, but i'm always a little let down by the distorted tones. Sounds muffled and "too digital" for me.
Do you have that impression as well?

@@TitoOliveiraDesign Hey Tito. Admitedly I moved on from ME-90 due to a couple pedals I couldn't do without and had issues integrating. However I found the drives in the me-90 to be some of the best drive sounds in the multi-fx world. They sounded really great to my ear and definitely did not have any digital kind of response. For reference, I have used the Helix, Quad Cortex and GX-100 and a large assortment of various drive pedals.

I just ordered a me-90. I am a completely blind person, so the idea of a unit that is all about knobs and tactile controls, instead of touchscreens and menus, that makes all the difference for me. It's why I also already own the Valeton GP-200. Buttons and knobs. I think the Valeton, Boss, and a couple other specific pedals I have will mean I have every conceivable sound I'll ever need, and I can actually use the gear, rather than getting lost trying to memorize menus since I'm not looking at screens.

I've had my ME-90 for about 3 weeks and I love it. It's the best value for money I've ever spent on gear. It inspires me to play and it makes it easy to get good sounds quickly without menu diving. It's important that you run with the 4 cable method if using with a real amp and cab. It sounded artificial just going straight into the front of an amp and the reverb was out of control. You have to install the editor to do this properly (so you can change the location of the send/return block) and that is actually pretty complicated unfortunately (why Boss??) The amps sound OK - but I mainly use it for the effects. I highly recommend it if you are looking for ease of use.

I thought about maybe snagging the ME-90 as a backup, but I already have a GT-1 with an extra two-button switch that covers just about everything well enough to muddle through a gig. For me, the assigns and the flexibility of the signal path in the GX make it the best option by far.

Here is my use case for the ME-90 : Use it as a pedal board in 4 cables method with a tube amp like a Fender Hod Rod or even a Boogie Nomad !
You don't need stereo, no need for an advanced EQ and It is also possible to use either the preamp from the amp or the one in the ME-90.
I agree that the GX-100 is better if you use it direct for recording but for the price, you get a hell of a good multi effects for your amp setup.

    • @TheDilligan
      @TheDilligan Год назад +4

Yeah you don’t need advanced EQ when that is either done by front of house or in the studio to make you sound best in the mix.
Stereo is really not necessary. In any live situation you can’t really pull off stereo when the audience is everywhere and sound is bouncing everywhere. And in the studio, I prefer recording dry and then adding reverbs and delays on busses so that I can compress and eq the delay separately. I use ping pong stereo delays all the time in those cases. but from a plugin.
The AIRD amp sims are amazing and I think the small onboard selection really covers all necessities.
I rather have the Me-90 and then also own an HX stomp for any weird stuff I want to do.
Could even stick the hX stomp in the effects loop of the me-90.

It’s Feb. 2024, and I’ve just purchased a GX-100. I might’ve gotten an ME-90 instead, but I’ve already got an ME-80 (which I’m considering giving to my niece). Somehow, getting the 90 doesn’t/didn’t make much sense. I have enjoyed the hands-on layout (and the battery pack) of the ME-80, but I somehow wasn’t motivated to create my own patches. (I thought the 90 would mean more of the same.) That is something I am stoked to do with the GX-100 when I fully learn how to program it. (When I focus long enough to create my own first patch, my hope is to have a JC 120 clean channel and either a Marshall Plexi sound or a Mesa Boogie sound in a midrange-boosted channel 2.)

For me, a deciding factor is whether I could take a unit to a gig and make any necessary tweaks without having to use a separate editor. The GX-100 shows on the screen what each parameter is set to, and if something needs a little more or a little less, then that's easy to achieve. The ME-90 has physical knobs, which seems like it would be an advantage for quick changes. But if you use a preset in sound-check and in this venue you feel it needs a bit less reverb or a bit more mids, the knobs give you no indication of what's programmed into the preset. Your mids might be at 1 o'clock in the preset and you just want it one notch higher. But the physical mids knob is pointing to 7 o'clock and the moment you touch it, your mids will jump to 7 o'clock and you have no point of reference to allow you to get back to 1 o'clock. Freely-rotating knobs with LED notches round the outside to show the current setting would be so much more useful. You'd be able to see that your mids are at 1 o'clock, and the knob would adjust from there. It's something that I find frustrating with any device that has the ability to store and recall presets, but that doesn't give you a way to see and adjust a parameter from its current setting. This includes the Katana. I appreciate LED indicators would add to the cost, but they would make devices like the ME-90 and the Katana so much more useful for gigging players.

Both sound great. The problem with the 90 is you don't know what your settings are at when you change to another preset. So for example if you go to channel 2 and want the gain at 11 o'clock you won't know where the setting is until you move the knob. That would drive me crazy. Looking at a preset and seeing your setttings jist by looking at the screen is a big help. Plus you can name your favorite settings on the GX 100 which the 90 cannot do.

I wonder if Boss will be releasing a new Boss GT-1 next with the new AIRD tech. At this point it's the only thing left in the line that is still using COSM.
I ordered and ME-90 and I think I'd definitely be interested in the GT-1 if they update it as well.

The GX-100 is good but I did not like how it faired in the 4cm with an amp. It made the tone darker? The Stomp doesn't have that adverse impact, so I got rid of the GX-100.

For $250 + tax difference I think the ME-90 will do just fine, Plus I like the mobility of the unit by utilizing the batteries and mobile app on my Android running the BTS which makes it completely untethered and quick to use. I have a GT100 and really don't care much for all that menu drama when I just want to jam out. Also' like the GX unit, you can jam along with YT backing tracks if you have the BT-Dual adapter which works perfectly and seems to be a good asset to the unit. Good technology for less money is a no brainier!

Oh man I wanna stick with the me 90 I’ve been used to the me 80 just turning some knobs that may not be the perfect sound but it is decent enough. I’ve ran straight into boards and if there’s a decent soundman, he can make that thing. Sound good
I know some people can spend all that time tweaking and they’re really good at it. I just want to turn some knobs it’s gotta be decent enough.

I'm thinking about units like these in terms of guitar and bass, as I play both. I know that the GX-100 is built for both, while the ME-90 is built just for guitar. Anyone use the GX for guitar and bass? Thinking about ease of use and having less gear to deal with, I wonder if it would be better to have a GX or an ME-90 plus a separate pedal/di box for bass...

  • @mmm-marikenogmartinmediaas4523

John, thank you for another awesome video. Your plaging and backingtracks are always on point, however the talking head sound quality really leaves a lot to be desired, and I am sorry to say, it often is not the most pleasant to listen to. For us musicians, that is a sensitive point. I would fix it if I where you. As always, thank you for putting out such useful information so often! Best wishes from Oslo.

How do you bypass the IR's on the ME90 , I mean totally, directly on the unit? I heard it could be done with the software plugged on the computer?
This is essential if you use a real tube amp with the unit.
I had the ME90, plugged directly in my tube amp. The sound with the amp models was total crap, whatever line out mode engaged (the switch behind the unit), and whatever off the cab selected (the list where there is the 1x10, 2x12, 2x12, KATANA, ect...).
HORRIBLE sounding on a high end amp..
Is it the same on the GX100?
People who like the ME90, do you play it on monitors or what? I can't understand guys saying they love the gain sounds if plugged in a good tube amp (which is my case)

I feel like an ME-90 style unit could be THE perfect multi fx if you had two of each block… this way one could stack overdrives and delays. Guitar world needs a Nord style multi fx unit that’s super high quality but w/ knob per function and almost no menu diving.

I’ve had the ME90 for a couple of weeks now. Loving the amp models and the ODs. The only downside so far is that the expression pedal needs to be programmed via PC for anything other than volume.(unless I’m missing something?) not a deal breaker for me as I have set a few of presets, one with whah another with freeze etc.
I’ve managed to dial in a half decent sound for my nylon string using the transparent amp. Using just a touch of gain takes out the brittle highs and warms it up nicely.
Other than that, I’m more than likely going to sell my GT1000 core. I hate having to dive into menus to adjust things on the fly. There are obviously some limitations but the positives far outweigh the negatives for me.

I picked the me 90 for many reasons. One it is great for busking to playing live is so easy to look down and see what you have and make a slight adjustment three and this is most important. I'm only a tone chaser in the studio. Life is about getting out of vibe and entertaining an audience. And the only people who have ever commented on my tone where other guitarists. And as I am not playing for the likes of a guitarist hahaha only the happiness of the bartender in the club owner plus the audience. P I trade it up from ME 80 to the me 90. If I were more interested in recording, I might go for the GX 100 . I just simply prefer playing over tweaking. And even at 63, I can still see the chicks dig it.

But the ME-90 is great if I just don't want to fuss around or do anything weird.

Having too much granularity is a pain in the ass and you can get lost and confused and you can even mess up settings with that many options that is why I do not like menu-driven effects pedals it's too easy to corrupt and distort tone without knowing exactly what you're doing. What are you going to do sit and read a manual for two years then use the pedal? It's just too complex the menu-driven stuff, the ME series is really easy and works well enough.

That's right, the ME90 effects are OK, but the amp sims and Drive section are just plain horrible. I tried everything but no way this sounds good in a tube combo.
I returned it after a few days.
I read since that it's possible to bypass some kind of IR, that is responsible of this sound mayhem, when plugged on the software on a computer
I suspect this thing is calibrated to be plugged in studio monitors or wide range cabs.
I just cannot understand people saying raving about the sound.. If plugged in an amp that is?
Can someone confirm this possibility to cut the internal IR, and just get the output flat, so the amp sims and drives sound decent on an amp?
Gosh in these days of digital, it's getting harder to get things simple.. and of quality 😅

Those subtle differences you pick armoire for somebody who producers and record more than they play live. Plus that is a 60 + percent price differential. I play live and I record myself live, if I record at all. I don't know how many sounds you want coming out of your guitar when you play live to need all those things you're talking about I'm going to stick with the ME 90 as soon as guitar center gets one. That is assuming it is better than my ME 80. Which is great for busking and playing live with a band. But I will admit I have never been a tone freak. Trying to get perfect sound to me take the joy out of playing my guitar and entertaining my audience.
