    I think you severely underestimate Spain, Spain in 1939 had 200k men that were all veterans from 3 years of grueling fighting in modern warfare and in 1940 had 250k thousand men.
    So it just doesn’t make any real sense how Germany could break through the mountain line in the Spanish-French border so quickly which would have 200k veterans defending it most of which were religious or ideological fanatics that would rather die over seeing Spain humiliated.
    I still believe they would lose due to lacking an industry because of the Spanish civil war but your depiction of them falling instantly severely underestimates Spain

    • @WarfareWizz

      Spain also only had a handful of obsolete light tanks and aircraft and no ability to quickly manufacture large amounts of tanks, aircraft, and artillery. There's a reason Spain didn't join the Axis, Spain was even less prepared for war than Italy, and combat experience of the soldiery is vastly overestimated an advantage in the era of modern warfare. After all the coalition that fought Iraq in the 90s was made up of armies who hadn't seen any major conflict since Vietnam fighting the fourth largest army on earth who had spent a decade fighting Iran, and Germany invaded a USSR in 1941 who had been hardened fighting Poland, Finland, and Japan but still rolled over them at first.
      Spain's only hope would be that Britain might come to its aid, but seeing how Britain failed to defend a far smaller front in Greece it's unlikely the battered British army tied up in North Africa would have been able to offer much support to Spain.

    • @mqdboy9278
      @mqdboy9278 3 дня назад +6

      @@hawawah8671Germany’s strategy is quick manouver warfare with tanks. Spain is a very mountainous country and in the 1940’s it had barely any infrastructure that could help the Germans. Also the Spaniards are a very proud country when it comes to outsiders, even after the terrible Civil War massive waves of Spaniards would rise up against the German tyranny.

    • @hawawah8671
      @hawawah8671 3 дня назад

      @@mqdboy9278 That's largely irrelevant, Germany invaded plenty of regions with poor infrastructure and terrain, the muddy USSR, Greece, Yugoslavia, hell their breakthrough into France was conducted in such dense forests that it was considered essentially impassible to tanks. They also faced partisans in plenty of places.
      I'm not saying Spain wouldn't have become a cancer for the Axis tying down soldiers and probably overwhelming them as their armies collapsed before the allies even could liberate them much like the Serbs and Croats did, but it wouldn't stop the invasion. If Germany decided to keep moving after the fall of France than it's likely that from the Germans crossing the border to the collapse of the Spanish government would have been under a month.

    Spain would be an absolute nightmare to conquer and occupy, think close to Yougoslavia levels of resistance thanks to the terrain.
    Shouldn't Vichy France be depicted as in the axis for the entire war after the British raid on the French fleet in Algiers assuming that still happens?
    The NATO articles were very clear about not protecting colonial holdings, so that won't let Spain and Portugal keep their colonies (remember Goa irl).

    I don't think Spain would fall that easily, if anything I think this would be a disaster, Communists partisans with allied support would be incredibly tumultuous, and would definitely bring a lot of animosity towards Mussolini, additionally I think Portugal will absolutely join the Allies, an Iberian front would absolutely be a logistical nightmare, you're spot on with not being a military genius because holy shit imagine trying to invade a country with decimated infrastructure and a mountain range separating it from you and your supplies, I don't think invading Spain will be that easy, Britain and Portugal will definitely make it a living hell, remember the Napoleonic wars? Spain will become Germany's Vietnam, a resource sink that will give the USSR a stronger position, alienate their Italian allies which may see Germany as a potential backstabbing conqueror one day, and will be used as further propaganda and justification by Roosevelt to increase lend-lease efforts a significant margin, not to mention that occupying Iberia costs a lot, and I don't think that a lot Spanish fascists will cooperate seeing as they only asked for more but got declared war on, if anything they'll only interpret it as an act of aggression.
    I really dislike this scenario, it feels a bit too unrealistic even by alternative history standards, if anything it sounds like wishful thinking compared to what will actually happen, there is a good reason why invading Spain never happened in real life, it's just too much of a hassle and this scenario does not reflect that at all in my opinion, good video though.

Third of all, Spain didn’t destroy the French or something with that war of guerrillas, in fact, the French occupied the peninsula for a lot, and so much Spanish persons died in the process by a lot of massacres, in fact, if napoleon did things right and just not invade Russia, Spain would have remained under French control during so many more years.
      And fourth of all, if germany had invaded Spain in 1940, we would have surrendered faster than France, we had a silly army and infraestructure in comparison with Germany, and we had just finished a pretty hard civil war, we would have gotten overrun by the Germans pretty easily, and so the Portuguese.

    I'm 5 minutes in and all I've over-understood is that: Germany wanted to invade Spain in 1941 to capture Gibraltar and force the UK to surrender. Mr Herr X presented a plan to the Austrian Painter to capture Gibraltar through Spain in 1941. Spain remained neutral and asked for too much so they remained neutral in 1941. For this reason Germany had to invade Spain to invade Gibraltar in 1941. This was necessary in order to invade Gibraltar in 1941 to force UK out of the war. This is why Germany was planning to invade Spain and Gibraltar in 1941. After the fall of France Germany could invade Spain in 1941 through the North and advance towards Gibraltar in 1941. Spain was neutral at that time so that's why Germany made a plan to invade Spain in 1941. The UK also fortified Gibraltar so that Germany couldn't invade Gibraltar in 1941 so easily.

    What if you do a timeline where Spain AND Turkey are forced into the Axis Powers.
    As with Turkey fully joining the Axis means that the Axis can most likely win any battles in the middle east and perhaps prevent the Allied invasion of Iran.
    The Axis winning in the middle east means that the Axis could also take or disable the Suez Canal which makes the Allies retaking North Africa a lot harder.
    Having Turkey in the Axis means Germany can directly take the Caucas territories in the beginning of the German-Soviet conflict which increases the chances of European, Axis powers suriving the war and getting a reasonable peace deal with the Allies.

    I'd say Germans would still rush to reinforce _at least_ the French front. Plus, with Soviets being far more successful, I'd doubt they'd get less. I think the allied advantages of having spain as a landing ground and Soviet advantages of barbarossa being FAR weaker could even each other out, if not give overall advantage to the soviets. Nice video though, I like this prospect.

      I agree with you, as I said I don't want to have the same old historical borders, which will get boring. Imagine watching a 21 minute video just to see the exact same borders at the end, but Spain is in NATO 30 years earlier. That would be a realistic, yet boring conclusion

  • @gonzalosanchez1538

    There is no way for Germany to capitulate Spain in 2 months:
    Look at a topographic map of Spain. It took the germans, italians and the other axis minors over half a year to conquer Yugoslavia and Greece, which have a slightly more mountainous terrain than Spain; but now you need to keep in mind that the Spanish army was filled with veterans and elite troops after 3 years of civil war, and they were experts on war on their own terrain.
    While Spain would fall due to having no industry after the civil war, I don't think it's take less than half a year.
    Another point to take into account is that the Spanish population was fully armed, and while I don't think leftists would join the defense of Spain, they would quickly rise up in guerrillas like those in Yugoslavia (like they rose up against Franco in our timeline), and so would rise up the carlists and a lot of falangists, draining a lot of resources from Germany, making the North Africa and/or Barbarossa campaigns a disaster

    I see people saying that Spain could organize guerilla warfare tactics like it was with Napoleon but I want to mention few differences:
    - in napoleonic wars, invasion of iberia is just another of many, many napoleon's campaigns while operation fenix would be executed early, not so long after outbreak of ww2
    -in napoleonic wars, Spain wasn't that much divided as it was after civil war
    -in napolonic wars, Napoleon at the time of iberian campaign, already was stretched thin
