Lindybeige what pieces were playing? I felt like I heard parts of it before, but can't place it for the life of me... heheh, the life of me... in a tomb... *shudders*
thecookieeater I expected creepiness. I watched. I was pretty disappointed. At the end of the video I got back, opened a new tab in browser with Batok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta III (Shining's soundtrack, moment with the two girls in the corridor), and played again. Yep. Creeps and goosebumps this time.
wow there is so much content on this channel from over the years. fun to find little gems like this one that are less popular than the million-view selection
This kind of video is one of the reasons why I love Lindybeige. One thing that I notice about everything in the catacombs is that they are carved out at the scale of human energy. Whereas today, were we to take the same approach, we with our petroleum and electricity based machines would have likely created large rooms, hallways and entrances. One can tell that human energy must produce results differently, leading to narrow entries, wide but low, or small arched window-like openings. Crudeness of work aside, we see very simple solutions to achieve specific goals. The creation of these catacombs, in reality, likely took years of human effort to produce, and probably in increments. I'd be very surprised to learn that they were planned out, rather than merely extended by need and convenience.
I've got some film on my computer of neolithic, bronze and iron age tombs I visited in southern england. I haven't done anything with it so far. This video gave me a boost. Thanks.
Would you ever consider visiting Georgia? There is alot of ancient ruins/castles/churches etc. there, my uncle is a guide and he knows alot of stuff if you are interested.
Doc Riedenschneider I recommend hiring a driver/guide (guide is nice if you are a group) in the capital who can get you around the country and visit places like tusheti, kazbegi, kahketi, vardzia (many more) etc.. The capital is nice but nothing special really, so id stay there for some days at most and then go touring the countryside wich is really nice and unique to the rest of europe.
Awesome video as usual. I try to visit all the archaeological sites when I travel but are often disappointed with the amount and quality of information about them available. You are slowly but surely fixing this.
9:00 PM, dark outside (with no lights in the room), and I am watching Lindybeige for some relaxing, informative videos: suddenly, he cues music as he walks through catacombs. :(
Mike Hatley Not Skyrim. The stone is too light, and the overall-feel is off. And Lindy wasn't attacked by draugr either. Hammerfell, or maybe the desert-part of Elsweyr more is far more like this place, I'd wager. IF they even have catacombs in those cultures.
RuSosan How do you judge how light stone is? Hell, how do you even know what kind of stone is used in skyrim? Granite? All kinds of rock could've been used, y'know (so long as it puts up to weather, logically).
Great video Lindybeige! There's a very interesting stone door in those catacombs, which hinges on stone protrusions situated at the top and bottom of the panel, and interestingly it also has a recess which (I was told by the curator) once took a bronze lock. Pretty sophisticated I thought. I can send you pictures of it if you wish.
Fantastic tour Lindy, thanks for taking us into the Catacombs of Milete! I was wondering though, considering how small the complex is, can we assume that many of the bodies which were originally interred there would get swapped out after a set period of time? So that wealthier and more recently deceased individuals could have their time in the-land-without-the-sun as it were?
:D I'm surprised that you get fairly stupid or irrelevant comments. I really enjoy that your videos are unique an consistent in style and always informative. Keep posting them!
I should point out that since this video, the catacombs shown here have been extensively renovated and 7 other large catacombs have been excavated and opened to the public. You should revisit the site if you ever come back to Malta :)
Yo Lloyd, you should have a video about music in the middle ages post 1000 AD. Like, village songs and stuff, not just the church stuff. Surely, their was more than just church music, there must have been rural songs, especially when there was a lack of recorded history - songs were supposed to help people remember stuff. There's songs sung in villages in africa that are isolated from the rest of the world, so there had to be something back then. Also, what kind of instruments did they generally use? What would it have sounded like?
You're pointing to the root of the problem yourself: village songs weren't recorded. The scribes, all clerks with a very Christian education (and indoctrination!), mostly if not exclusively concerned themselves with the "higher" types of art.
You should crowdfund your "expeditions", have people chip in. And in return you could make more of those wonderfull, funny and enlightening documentaries.
The country of Georgia is very cool, I highly recommend Vardzia, and Svaneti. The country is called Sakartvelo in Georgian, if that helps clear up the name confusion.
***** It wasn't much of a holiday. It was a one-week video-shooting trip. Malta isn't very far from Britain and these are the days of cheap flights. I stayed in a very cheap place, and had I been in Britain I would still have needed to eat, so it wasn't an expensive trip, and, all going well, it will more than pay for itself (although I make more money from videos in which I just talk to the camera in my living room). I am a RUclipsr now.
Gordon Fields In all seriousness, I'd like to know this too. There doesn't appear to be a great lot of information about the place online. The first thing that comes up on a google search is this very video.
Geez, if some supernatural entity or horrid abomination were to attack you down there, getting out of the way or running away wouldnt have been an option... Btw, where to get the creepy music? I enjoyed it, I bet it'd make some horror games abit more unnerving if I used that as bgm! ^.^
I think i may be able to define Lindybeige's channel... "distracting students of archaeology from assignments to watch videos concerning what they should be writing about"... better than getting lost on tumblr i suppose... i should probably do some work now harhar!!
I like the idea that people once went: "There are caves down there with lots of dead people. What do we do?" "Chuck the dead out and herd animals in the caves." "Right-o!"
Hey Lindy! I know you love Historical Fencing and all, and if you're still in Malta, we have a HEMA club in Floriana, under the St.Publius church! Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00 - 9:00, if you want to come. We'd love to have you! c:
would this mean that in games and other psuedo-realistic fantasy worlds, the catacombs would be much more decorated and full of trinkets and other gifts for those passed? Because if so, I feel as though many of them have fallen victim to seriously inaccurate representation. I guess one must also factor in graverobbers and other looters though.
1:40 sure it's not just waste managment? "Ooh! those guests from Sardis make quite the mess, don't they?" "Yes.. Are you done tidying up the dinner table yet, love?" "Yes, let me just plash some water on it and I'm done."
Lloyd does the impossible and makes the pictures from his holiday interesting.
"A short but hygienically significant distance" - that's going on my next restraining order.
"A short but hygenically significant distance" are nowadays 1,5 metres, or 5 foot
That was good. :D
Next?? 😂😂
Course the chisel work would be rough if it was done whilst the workers were plastered.
It looked a bit like you were stalking that woman. This made me laugh.
dave epsin Rape isn't funny. Rape will never be funny.
Oh my god!!!!! aAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Dx
Usammity One can stalk people for other reasons. Like if there is no lurking allowed, one might have to stalk instead.
id rather creep
7:00
Look, if there's no undead then this can hardly be considered catacombs.
Scrub Wave Yeah, and not a necromancer to be seen.
Scrub Wave Also, there ain't no burning torches clinging to the walls.
Iron Pirate Ha this video reminded me of Dark Souls too if that is what you're referring to
Hayden C
Yeah, Dark Souls invented necromancers in catacombs.
What?
last time i went into some catacombs i was attacked by several level 3 kobolds
josh buckers Warcraft 3 reference?
Gotta watch for them Kobold Archers
I hope it's a D&D or BG reference lol
Kobolds are actually where the word 'Cobalt' comes from
This can't be a real catacomb. No torches.
Or undead minions.... lol
Or giant bowls of fire
Id like but you know 69
That creepy music segment was actually quite creepy.
thecookieeater It's actually two pieces of creepy music playing at once, for extra creep.
Lindybeige what pieces were playing? I felt like I heard parts of it before, but can't place it for the life of me... heheh, the life of me... in a tomb... *shudders*

Lindybeige It felt like a music from the game Diablo
Lindybeige It reminded of evil temple music from Neverwinter nights.
wow there is so much content on this channel from over the years. fun to find little gems like this one that are less popular than the million-view selection
Before: Oh, that looks interesting. I'd like to go there.
*Spiders*
After: Maybe not? Definitely not.
Why not? They can't do you any harm
@@ieuanhunt552 thank you, this is the first time any arachnophobes have ever heard this! that completely changes everything!
I love your sense of humour, lindey. Always on point and we'll delivered
One of these days, Lloyd is going to include a Jumpscare in one of these videos, and when he does, I'll be ready!
Nata Otum Sazac No you won't.
:)
Oh how you couldn't have been more right
༼ つ ◔Д◐ ༽つ Spooky pregnant ghost! Spotted at 6:55!

Francis Roy How long did they take to build? Don't we have building plans today?
My human energy turns to farts.
I've got some film on my computer of neolithic, bronze and iron age tombs I visited in southern england. I haven't done anything with it so far. This video gave me a boost. Thanks.
Maarten Maesen The celts couldn't have made very big tombs, couldn't they?
Your remarks on the conditions of the catacombs made me realize just how many priceless pieces of history has gone missing without us knowing it...
Would you ever consider visiting Georgia? There is alot of ancient ruins/castles/churches etc. there, my uncle is a guide and he knows alot of stuff if you are interested.
***** I'm not sure I like the idea of time traveling alots. We should wipe them out before they cause a paradox.
***** Any where particular that you'd recommend?
***** I want to see the world. Unfortunately, there is an awful lot of it.

Awesome video my friend !!! :)
Lloyd: "and here you can see..."
Me: "no you can't!"
-adjusting brightness and contrast... -
"all right, carry on, sorry!"
1:40 The Roman equivalent of pouring one out for your homies.
Awesome video as usual. I try to visit all the archaeological sites when I travel but are often disappointed with the amount and quality of information about them available. You are slowly but surely fixing this.
Interesting stuff. Reminds us all that what's buried now, is tomorrow's loot too.
9:00 PM, dark outside (with no lights in the room), and I am watching Lindybeige for some relaxing, informative videos: suddenly, he cues music as he walks through catacombs. :(
You're so brave Lindy!
I could never go in there with all the spiders about...
Why are you traipsing around Skyrim irl?
Mike Hatley Not Skyrim.
The stone is too light, and the overall-feel is off.
And Lindy wasn't attacked by draugr either.
Hammerfell, or maybe the desert-part of Elsweyr more is far more like this place, I'd wager.
IF they even have catacombs in those cultures.
RuSosan
Retextures FTW
Mike Hatley
Not if they're lore-breaking.
Mike Hatley No, I couldn't. There was a sign saying "Strictly no traipsing".
RuSosan How do you judge how light stone is? Hell, how do you even know what kind of stone is used in skyrim? Granite? All kinds of rock could've been used, y'know (so long as it puts up to weather, logically).
I love your videos so freaking much! Auto-liked!
Mongis Lort Auto-liked for me too!
Was this a natural cavern which got widened and worked on, or did they actually chisel out all that stone?
Great video as well.
CapnHolic It isn't natural. The stone is fairly soft, though.
Great video Lindybeige! I can almost hear John Rhys-Davies yelling "Lindy!"
It took me a while. But now I'm finally watching.
I saw a dining area in the catacombs in rome
I was totally expecting Lindy to pull a jump scare on us, it was surprising that he did not.
may I ask the title of the creepy music?
I'd love to use it as soundtrack for d&d sessions.
Actually started to get to me at a point.
What the blinking flip?!?
Lindybeige: Can you imagine fighting goblins and kobolds with your war scythe(!) in that kind of catacombs! ;-)
Oh wow, a Lindybeige video I hadn't watched before!
Do you think, that you as a professional, would get access to the Catcombs under Paris? I would love to see them in a video like this.
I went there. Intriguing and eerie place. The head recesses are an interesting feature. Similar things can be seem in some medieval stone coffins.
can you post a link to the map you displayed in the beginning? nice informative video BTW
Xfluffymonkeyx I did an image web-search for "Saint Paul's catacombs Malta map" and there it was.
Lindybeige thanks!
Fantastic tour Lindy, thanks for taking us into the Catacombs of Milete! Where might I find a copy of that map at the beginning? Seems highly serviceable for a dungeon crawl.
Lindybeige What song is used at thr end of your videos. It sounds very Victorian.
I was convinced Lloyd was going to pull a jump scare where he turned his camera around and said 'Beige'.
Lindybeige has such a good community. 800 likes and no dislikes! Wow!
What is the name of the creepy music soundtrack ?
:D I'm surprised that you get fairly stupid or irrelevant comments. I really enjoy that your videos are unique an consistent in style and always informative. Keep posting them!
Absolutely entertaining and historical, Bravo good Sir
You need to direct an awesome historical anime or movie
I should point out that since this video, the catacombs shown here have been extensively renovated and 7 other large catacombs have been excavated and opened to the public. You should revisit the site if you ever come back to Malta :)

another masterpiece! thanks for showing us the world!
Go down there with a bunch of smoky torches and foam weapons and do a D&D-based LARP, yeah!
sae1095hc Curator is like, "Okay, time to leave."
Bitch.
I almost didn't give this video a thumbs up but then he played the creepy music and finally it was fine.
Have you ever considered producing documentaries?
You should crowdfund your "expeditions", have people chip in. And in return you could make more of those wonderfull, funny and enlightening documentaries.
Why have all of the bodies been removed?
The country of Georgia is very cool, I highly recommend Vardzia, and Svaneti. The country is called Sakartvelo in Georgian, if that helps clear up the name confusion.
What do you do for a living to afford these trips? I've always wondered.

Lindybeige Well done for that - sharing knowledge like this is admirable, I've tried in the past so know it's not as easy
What sort of people would have been burried (catacombed?) there?
Oh My God! You should have put a screamer at the end of the spooky music.
mikenayeli Lloyd jumping into camera, with his scraggly hair.
Holy crap it's a tourist!
Thank you for sharing
What's a catacume?
What happened to the bodies?
Gordon Fields Clearly they got bored once people stopped coming over for meals and went out looking for their own parties.
TheGredig Funny, but I was actually curious.
Gordon Fields In all seriousness, I'd like to know this too. There doesn't appear to be a great lot of information about the place online. The first thing that comes up on a google search is this very video.
Gordon Fields Probably looted for the raw materials, old bones make good fertiliser and on an island that might be hard to come by
This reminds me the last tombs levels of arxs fatalis game

Dipteric: Having a double row of columns.
I know this comment is old af, but Lindy was most assuredly referring to diptera, i.e. insects with two wings (like flies and the like).
So how's creeping around in the dark?
The tumbnail sais milite the name of this video sais milete?
@5.33 that's a holder for tools :)
I'm not claustrophobic but I think I would feel damn incomfortable down there, even without the creepy music.
I think i may be able to define Lindybeige's channel... "distracting students of archaeology from assignments to watch videos concerning what they should be writing about"... better than getting lost on tumblr i suppose... i should probably do some work now harhar!!
looks like the inside to yoda's home. "good food, good food"
How did they see to carve all this? Loads of oil lamps and candles?
+Generality Yes. Many of the skylights were since sealed as well. There are holes in the walls for lamps.
6:16 swear to god i pooped my pants thinking that was a head on the left side
Probably worth mentioning these are catacombs e.g. multiple sets of caves not just a single cave some were specific faiths others mixed...
The chisel is rough because... well... they had limited lightsources back then... and no lampholders untill they carved one... :)
HistoricaHungarica "Fuck, Publius! Quit stepping on the candles."
Also, you can go to Gori and see the Stalin museum, in his home town.
That person messing with their phone....I was so scared I sharted (a little).
5/10. Not enough jump-scares but a healthy amount of beige - IGN
wow, 1180 likes and not a single thumbs down! Now THAT is quality!
That creepy music sure is creepy
I like the idea that people once went:
"There are caves down there with lots of dead people. What do we do?"
"Chuck the dead out and herd animals in the caves."
"Right-o!"
Tombs and spiders go together, thematically. Normally they'd be filled with the dead, and flies like the dead, while spiders like the flies.

TheObzfan Thanks! I was in Malta for just over a week. It will take me many months to edit all the footage I shot there.
7:36 scared the wits out of me

Echos of Roman soldiers...

Veni veni veni!!!!!
More of thish!
Imagine being the unlucky soul who fell down one of the skylights. At least they wouldn't have to take you far.
1:40 sure it's not just waste managment?
"Ooh! those guests from Sardis make quite the mess, don't they?"
"Yes.. Are you done tidying up the dinner table yet, love?"
"Yes, let me just plash some water on it and I'm done."
Did you find a dead thing
Milete or Milite?
A banjo would have been even more creepy.
Pluto? Surely hades in milete?
Hmm, neither tight dark places or dead people really scare me, but big cities do. I'm starting to think I might be just a little bit strange.
The lighting made this quite painful.
5.30 in:
Weren't physicians and surgeons very distinct professions for most of history, including the classical period?
Um.... Where's the bodies?
