Some people including Jiang Jialiang himself attributed his loss 4 years later to Appelgren to speed glue. I watched both matches, and even recorded the match in 1989 on VHS tape. Speed glue does have a huge effect on games. I tried it myself too. But to say Jiang lost the game in 1989 because of speed glue is a bit of exaggeration.

Jiang should be the fastest reaction tt player ever. However his skill relays more on the reaction time. When anyone gets older, the reaction time becomes longer which is normal. I think that’s why he retired at a very young age, which was just 25.

Jiang Jialiang was the amazing short pips specialist. He doesnt rely on his serves as a weapon. His relentless attacking play put tremendous pressure on the opponents.

@@blacksunshine1661 What Bose said was quite correct. But in 1985 speed glue had not yet made its appearance.

@@alberthuang4868 That's nonsense, Appelgren had been using speed glue since 1980.What really changed was the Swedes taking up weight training to improve their explosiveness and endurance.Even Jiang himself admitted his monolithic style couldn't develop further. It took decades for the Chinese to catch up with Sweden's all-round style.Kong Linghui was a rough approximation but still a weakling.
