I have been retired for about four years now and I do not see anything I want to spend on. I'm downsizing so am giving away stuff and have no desire to add to my 'hoard'. I like cooking, gardening, walking, playing guitar, and other activities which do not cost much. I do not care about luxury cars or boats or skiing in Aspen or orbiting the Earth on SpaceX. When I travel, I like to pick a single destination and rent a room for two weeks or so and explore the place on foot and public transportation, eating at where the locals dine (and afford) and experiencing the street life. Cruises, corporate hotels, extended tours, etc. are nightmares to me, that would keep me in a fake bubble and preventing me from experiencing the places I visit. I plan to relocate outside of California which will lead to even less spending while improving my life. In retirement, I live on less than my dividends, not to preserve the principal but because I see no alternative that would increase my pleasure through spending more.

Although I get the concept of the active management of a retirement fund and can see me doing that for the first year but I can't see me doing it 20 years into retirement (85 years old). My current plan has me looking at it yearly and even that I'm worried about making sure gets done.

Preserving their "principal", not "principle". 🙂

Since retiring two years ago (at age 72), my cash/investment portfolio has actually gone UP about $450K (easier in the current Bull Market).
