I have both breeds, and both are delightful. My Afghan Hound is a total cool customer. Loves to sleep in my lap, bounces around like Tigger! Very loving dog. My Salukis (I have 4) are all very different. But they can be very intense in their attachment to people. My favorite part of the day is when my tiny, 2 year old Saluki girl and my big Afghan boy run circuits around the dog yard, taking turns being "the rabbit."

I had an Afghan Hound from 7 weeks old until he died at 13 years. I am lucky to live in Cornwall near beaches and clay pits, (wide open spaces.) I would check a place out to make sure he couldn't get to a road or farm animals. If all was well I'd let him off the lead. I never lost him and so he spent more than half his life off the lead. Yes at times he was difficult to get back on the lead and I had to be more crafty than him which made me laugh, but he was an Afghan and I accepted that. If perfectly safe, they need to run free.

    • @Asptuber
      @Asptuber 3 года назад

@@robertdixon3580 Indeed. And the worst thing is that they are pretty good at fooling you into thinking that they have very good recall... And then they really, really, really want something. Or just want to take you for a long walk in the forest - you call and they come within 5-10m and stand there looking at you like "what took you so long? Let's go, go go!"

    You have the saluki wrong.
They need an hour of hard running a day until they're 4. Walk one around the block, they'll hate you. They need a big field, and good running.
They're amazing with kids. From babies to toddlers, to infants, they LOVE kids gentler than a greyhound and more likely to tolerate being clambered on.
They will chase anything. For miles. These are the marathon runners of the dog world. Tired is a curse word.
How about actually spending time with some, before comparing? You've done a beautiful FAMILY dog a grave injustice.

I've owned five afghans and it is a shame all of these documentaries can't get past the grooming aspect of the breed. They are no harder to care for than any other long haired breed. Unfortunately their beauty is the reason why most people buy them and because of the grooming requirements they never get to appreciate what a glorious beastie these goof balls are.. I realized this six months into my first experience with a hound. I.ve always joked that when you're dealing with an afghan, you have to accept the fact that half of the time when you look into their eyes you can see the lights are on but there is nobody home.

    • @Aducane

My parents got a male and female afghan when I was 5 and my sister 3. No one had ever seen one in our city. They bred them, showed them and they were wonderful with small kids. Smart and sweet and yet great guard dogs. They will run together as a pack if they got loose. Yes they need grooming, so does my Pyrenean Shepherd I have now. Many dogs need regular grooming, it's not that big of a deal. And you can always have them clipped. A friend of mine had show afghans and as soon as they "retired" them they shaved them.

@@ONEFAITHofJESUS I've had salukis for a decade, and they're portrayal here has upset me.
They're puppies until they're at least 4, and extremely high energy. You can't walk one around a block and expect a happy dog. (Think spaniel).
They're needy. You will become their slave (if they love you enough).
      They're glamorous. Fast. Beautiful.
They adore children and babies as a rule. I've never known one to NOT be gentle and allow play/ear pulls/puppy piles. They will allow manicures and nail polish.
They don't bark. Crap guard dogs.
They're not food orientated. Have fun training, because they *choose* whether to obey. This is not a lab.
They're smarter than an Afghan. But not by much. Stubborn buggers.
12/10 would recommend. They're amazing animals

Having had Salukis for 20yrs, I can state, categorically, they need to run- it’s what they were bred for- walk round the block will only result in a very unhappy and destructive dog.
Saluki are the long distance runners of the sighthounds - their speed and stamina is beyond impressive.
They need to run for good mental health.
Many of the clips in this video are from other makers video- it’s time YT put a stop to both plagiarism and poor quality content.
