  • In this video, I'm removing the rear bumper cover on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited. This method will also work with 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 models as well.
    Tools that I used in the video (these are Amazon affiliated links):
    Gear Wrench Set: www.amazon.com...
    Plastic Clips Removal Tool: www.amazon.com...

    Just did this repair and it worked! Did not have the plugs so just taped off the openings for now to verify. Water does not appear to be entering our Highlander any longer, and we've had some pretty bad rains here in Florida. We have been searching for a cause and repair for almost two years now. Thanks for the fix!

      Awesome! Yeah, we had the same problem for years, and we are also in FL 🏝.
      I did both, new plugs and taped them off so they don’t fall out again.

    Thanks so much. I found 3 plugs missing. 2 of which were actually resting on the plastic liner in the wheel wells. They were dry rotted and lost their elasticity. I replaced them and sealed them with caulk. Lets see if this works.

    Where does the water go when it gets in the holes? Does it need to be pumped out before new grommets are put on or will it eventually find its way out? Thank you.

    Did this fix your water problem, I saw the post that goes along with this video and I had the same problem with water coming in. I removed my bumper and sealed all the plugs with silicone. The scotch tape might not not last.

    • @DIYtimeTRD
      @DIYtimeTRD  5 лет назад

      Yes, this fixed my problem. I never had any more water coming inside the car so far. If this starts happening again, I will replace tape with silicone too. Thanks for sharing your tip!

    Hi Victor, thanks for sharing this. I have a water problem too and I'm about to take off the bumper cover following your video. Do you need to take off the bumper too and if so do you have any info on how to do so? Thanks!

      No, just the bumper cover.

    You know if the previous model has the same issue? Water is leaking in my 2006 highlander hybrid. Took out all the carpet and hose the car down. Nothing.

    • @DIYtimeTRD
      @DIYtimeTRD  2 года назад

      Probably yes. I noticed mine had wet carpets only after long heavy rains, not from just hosing it down. I think it takes some time for water to overfill and get to the carpet in the back row.

    Hi Victor, thanks for this video and the related article regarding water getting through behind the bumper. I was wondering whether you know why the plugs go missing and why it didn't cause a problem earlier in the car's life. I am researching the same issue on my 08 Highlander. Thank you.

    • @DIYtimeTRD
      @DIYtimeTRD  4 года назад

      I have two theories.
      One: our car was hit slightly in the rear bumper twice. Nothing serious, but maybe plugs fell out from impact.
      Two: we live in Florida. Plugs could dry rot or crack from high temperature over time.

      @@DIYtimeTRD Thanks. I removed my bumper today and there are 2 holes missing on each side. I am ordering the plugs. I sure hope this works. Thank you so much for sharing your learnings with those suffering from wet floors and moldy interiors... :(

    Anyone know where I can pick up the black plastic plate cover at 1:21? Not the push pin but the black plate it is holding in under the bumper, somehow I have managed to lose it

      Not sure, but should be a very similar process. Remove all screws and bolts you can find, and then carefully try to detach the bumper cover.
