Thank you, Justin, for reacting to the whole of this album. Didn't I tell you they were good? I would definitely recommend, "Talk Of The Town" from their second album (or the entire album if you can find the time). Chrissie Hynde and Martin Chambers still continue to play as the Pretenders. It is very sad, though, that the original classic line-up would be so tragically short-lived.
Great album. Not a bad cut on it. I remember purchasing it, when it first came out (based solely on a review in Stereo Review magazine). It far exceeded expectations. It was at a time when there wasn't much that caught my attention as far as music or new artists goes. A real dry spell. But the Pretenders sure changed that! Ray Davies of the Kinks said the album was like a drug, and I agree. You could/can get high on listening to it, but without any negative effects ...
one of my favorite Pretenders tracks, and I love most all the tracks on this album. what a finisher! Then I would flip it over and go again!! Let's do it!
One of the great tracks from this debut album. Now Justin, you have to complete this former Pretenders line up with their second album, the underrated but still brilliant Pretenders II.😉
This will be so hard to top for me Justin. Enjoying and re-appreciating this fantastic album, track by track with you has been so much fun! I thank you for that.
The perfect end to the album. Catchy, up-tempo with more great guitar solo work from JHS. On the subject of completing albums, what about the Bill Nelson's Red Noise Sound On Sound album which stalled a while back?
Yeah, Talk of the Town, Message of Love, Back on the Chain Gang (written about the loss of bass player Farndon and guitarist Honeyman-Scott) are all great tracks to follow-up with.
Wisdom is a "Mystery Achievement". We think it's attained, but we are just Pretenders, "Learning To Crawl". No need to "Break Up the Concrete", "Alone" or together, "I'll Stand By You", through it all.😃-✌&❤
Great reaction! Pretenders are quality in any era. A band that deserves more appreciation. I'm glad to see your generation beginning to react to them now.
"we're goin down down down to the Palace of Love "JP. That's the closing epic of Doll by Doll's Debut 1979 LP 'REMEMBER'. You'd do far worse to start at the opening Butcher Boy, though but I'll leave that window of Opportunity wide open 4 u. Diolch.
Great song and great album. I remember skanking around the dance floor at our junior prom to this one. BTW, Justin -- for those of us who were in high school when this came out, X-Box was WAY AFTER our time. Back then computer games were still in their infancy, and the Internet as we know it did not exist (although I remember using a friend's dial up modem to connect to the University of Chicago BBS!)
I believe the Mystery Achievement she's singing about is that ideal of undying romantic love that we are conditioned to EXPECT but which, at least for some, seems to remain unattainable.
JP I knew you'd love this record and band. They are a tremendous band that can do very little wrong in my book. After the death of Honeyman-Scott the sound changed a bit but they remained true somehow. Chrissy seems to have a knack for writing songs with irrisitable hooks, and that voice is just so unique and wonderful. I hope at some point you get to hear their cover of The Smiths "Everyday Is Like Sunday". Though it was a cover it's one of my favorite songs they recorded. There are many favorites of mine and eventually you'll hear them all so be prepared to be emotionally moved and smile as well because that's what The Pretenders give. Speaking of giving (ohhh snap I have to pat myself on the back for this segue lol ) there is a song called "Give Blood" by a contemporary of Chrissys named Pete Towsend, you should react to it. Remember I was the one who coaxed you to listen to Zappa's "The Ocean...." and you were floored by that one...so what do ya have to lose???? 🙂(all in good fun)... As always, be well & be safe.
Love this album, but haven't listened in a while. It was a blast relistening along with you. BTW, I did get to see this band in, I believe '81, before they blew apart. It was an exciting show.
I'm almost finished with Chrissie Hynde's autobiography. Lead guitarist Honeyman-Scott? Not a fan of punk. Like .... in no way. "He liked the Beach Boys, ABBA, Niel Young, Dave Edmonds, Nick Lowe and John Lennon. He particularly disliked punk music, which he didn't find in the slightest bit interesting as it was devoid of musicality and melody. He didn't give a toss about attitude." -- C. Hynde, 2015.
One of the greatest debut albums of all time Second one, is a step down, but still very good. After that hit and miss in their career since never the same band again - missing the genius of Honeyman Scott who died in his sleep. Easily one of the best guitarists of his generation.
I got this album when I was 12. The hit 'Brass in Pocket' was getting a lot of radio play. I thought it was a cute, boppy almost disco little track but then I heard the rest of the album and I am pretty it made me gay.
Way back when I was a callow youth (or thereabouts) this whole album, i.e. both sides (vinyl OK), was on high rotation. A lot of songs with a solid driving beat and seriously good structure and inventiveness. Edged out The Cars first album.
It didn't help at all when 2 of the original Band members died. Pete Farndon died from a Heroin overdose then James Honeyman Scott died from a Cocaine overdose. After their first two great Rock albums I didn't buy anything else by "The Pretenders" Not long before Pete Farndon died, he had been sacked from the Band because he became very unreliable and unprofessional due to his Heroin usage. I treasure their first two albums.
Call that a great debut album?!?! That's not a great debut album... This's a great debut album: 'Songs To Remember', by Scritti Politti, deffo one for your playlist JP.
One of my favorite bass lines ever, I love the debut.
Sublime! Honeyman-Scott never got the recognition he deserved. I'm sure I can detect his influence when I hear Johnny Marr.
Thank you, Justin, for reacting to the whole of this album. Didn't I tell you they were good? I would definitely recommend, "Talk Of The Town" from their second album (or the entire album if you can find the time).

Seconded for 'Talk of the Town' - one of their best, I think!
@@slbgraphics2 "Talk of the Town" and "Message of Love" are my faves.
Yes mystery achievement a thinking man’s pop song love you
Thank you for playing my favorite Pretenders song. It never gets old.
Start with Precious, end with Mystery Achievement. Great bookends to this awesome album!😎🔈🔉🔊😎
Triumphant finish to a brilliant album!
Mystery Achievement is one of my favorite tracks ever. Love their live performance from "Loose in L.A."

OMG ha! Those were the days, flipping the album over in one motion between both hands to play it all again...
@@erickent3557 Can you imagine the physical effort required to listen to an album again back then?😁
@@Renjeaux Yah! And don't get me started on the force to push play on a tape deck!
One of the great tracks from this debut album.

Great choice! Great album! Next 80's album listen? "Skylarking" by XTC!!!!
I sure agree that Mystery Achievement is a great album closer!
As I mentioned a couple songs ago, totally surprised how many songs off this album i know. Shows just how great a debut it really was,
This will be so hard to top for me Justin. Enjoying and re-appreciating this fantastic album, track by track with you has been so much fun! I thank you for that.

Pete Farndon is the secret MVP on this album. Love his bass playing.
Such a great track. Glad you liked it. Now before you move on to Pretenders II, be sure and check out the non album track "The Cuban Slide".
And “Porcelain”
WARNING Playing this while driving alone on the open highway will have you seeing just how fast your car will go.

Definitely one of the songs that I think of when thinking of the Pretenders. Good stuff!

First song I ever heard from them. A rock radio staple , still.
My favorite song of theirs.

The Pretenders best song.

Pretenders II 😉
"Learning to Crawl" next... it's their best.
OK but not before Justin started Pretenders II. For me this one is their best!😉
There was nothing like Chrissy Hynde and The Pretenders. What about “Human”?
