I have clematis don’t know what type they are I will have to pay more attention to how they grow. I love the clematis growing on the trellis and the roses and clematis growing together. I am a new subscriber.🌸
I am a firm believer in having a journal that I write in. Many people think you should just keep it on your phone. I don't. I see you have a journal. Love it!
thank you !! we needed this video cause there are barely any clematis videos here on YT beyond just showing them in full bloom! i actually replanted mine this morning in this tomato/vegetable planter w a trellis i found on sale - the roots are very strong they are resilient !!
I just found you the other day and I'm telling you, I have followed a lot of gardeners and you are tops in my book! The way you break down categories and each plant and details is amazing and I truly appreciate you! About 4 yrs ago I bought a clematis at HD and it has a mix of all yours except the last one you did.Its in part sun/ shade and as summer goes on July on I pull it back into my shade garden on the patio and does fantastic. Now I finally know the names of each one I have! Also I love that you write in a book, I have kept physical garden journals for yrs .I believe if something was to happen my kids can have information if time comes Internet is gone.. Have a great day in your beautiful gardens🕊️💚🌹
My aunt had the most beautiful clematis of anybody I have seen. Her secret was burning a rock beside the roots of the plant. She learned it from her grandmother to help keep the roots cool.
So glad I found your channel! I'm in Georgia Zone 8A. I have 2 HF Youngs that are 3 or 4 years old. I have them planted side by side (they each have their own trellis) in a spot that gets sun until around 3 to 4pm. The one on the left goes into shade a little before the one on the right and has less blooms. I know I haven't been pruning correctly. I was cutting them down pretty much to the ground in the Fall. They both come back in the spring and are very vigorous growers. However, they mainly produce flowers on the bottom and the top. The middle is primarily green leaves. They are also very thick and bushy and intertwine into a tangled mess in places. From what I've read it's due to pruning to the ground each year it promotes more branches. It needs to be thinned out. I am thinking of moving one to another nearby location and repositioning one where it is currently giving them a chance to shine on their own and help me with maintenance as they are growing. They outgrew their trellises last year so my husband made an extension, however, they outgrew the extension this year maybe due to all of the rain we have had this spring. Not sure what the minimum height I should have for this variety. It bloomed earlier this year than normal due to our weather and I think it's time to cut it back. When is the best time to transplant a clematis and can you offer any other suggestions/recommendations? This was a great video!
Hello from Dallas, Texas🤠 A great source to find clematis, go to Donahue's Greenhouse. Its an online and they have an extensive line of clematis for a low great price... Every variety of clematis for around $15 bucks. Happy gardening❤️🐞❤️🐞❤️
I bought a Belle of Woking clematis about 4 years ago as a bare root plant. I appreciate this video as this is my first attempt at growing clematis. It took a couple of years but it’s blooming now and it’s beautiful. I didn’t realize how important it is to prune them, so as soon as these blooms are gone I’ll get to that. I am in zone 8 in Alabama. I love your videos. They are informative and interesting.
Instant subscribe. Loved how you shared this. I haven't pulled the trigger on buying them as I thought they couldn't grow in a zone 10. But I see that some varieties are hardy to that zone. So excited. Amazing content. Very insightful and you explained the pruning of different groups perfectly. Cape Town South Africa.
Same girl same (about love of the plant and loathe the cost at nurseries). I scored THREE at Costco this spring! Less than 25$ (might have even been under 20!!!) there was another I didn’t grab, and wish now I had! It was a light pink double flower! I’ll for sure be watching for it next year!! Thanks for the great info on the groups/pruning!!!
New sub. Really like your show - just watched your shade garden - I have a lot of shade. Thanks for the clematis info - I struggle with getting mine to bloom so wish me luck! Zone 5-6 Southern Ontario 🇨🇦
Again, a timely video!! I have 4 clematis I bought at Lowe's and haven't had a chance to get them in the ground. I haven't had much luck recently (I've lost 4), so the planting depth could have been my issue. I currently have a Jackmanii on the opposite side of a red rose on an arbor. They could meet this year, we'll see. I thought the same thing about combining the colors. There's also a light lavender clematis with the Jackmanii. I have 2 others but no idea the names. (Zone 7, Maryland) Interestingly, I happen to watch Linda Vater who has a Taiga clematis, which I also have, who was pinching the growth. I'm too chicken since this is really only the second year, but she certainly showed where it branched and had new blooms.
All your hard work of weeding and planting is really coming to fruition. I am growing Crystal Fountain, Roguchi, and Empress Josephine. I didn't think I would like Roguchi but love it. Crystal Fountain is very pretty. I hope my Empress Josephine blooms this year -- it died back a lot last year and never got flowers. Gardening keeps our hopes aliive.
Very informative! I planted two new clematis 2 or 3 years ago. They haven’t put any new growth out from base until this year one has one new shoot. Maybe I need to fertilize more. If you are already digging a trench it would be good if you could go ahead and put a French drain in. We have a similar backyard and issue. When we put an inground pool in over a year ago it just made it worse to one side of our house (where my rose garden was so it was all mud and killed out most the roses I had left). I finally got a French drain put in this last week and it’s amazing how quickly it’s letting it all dry up. We have rain coming this week so it will be a good test to see how well it will work overall. I’m a heavy sweater too 🥵 I have a favorite hat from Amazon that I wear during the summer and keeps it from rolling down into my eyes which can be painful sometimes!
Gardening in zone 6a. I have H F Young Clematis, Still Waters Cotton Candy Vancouver and Plum Gorgeous Vancouver. I have had my H. F Young the longest. This is the third season for the Still Waters so I'm looking forward to a beautiful show from it this season. This is the first season with the Cotton Candy Vancouver and the Plum Gorgeous Vancouver. They were planted in the fall. Thanks so much for your content!
Your porch and gardens are so beautiful!! I thought I killed a clematis last year but threw it in the ground anyway. I just noticed, zone 6b, there is green on it, it is coming back. So excited!
Perfect timing I have 2 Earnest Markham and 2 Romano bare root and placed them in the garden in their pots and they already grabbed a hold of the trellis lol, guess that's where they want to be! The rose and clematis are absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤
Good evening. I love the way you garden, that pretty sums me up as well. I am one to fertilize and cut things that need to be cut away however in my gardens it becomes you perform great but it is fit of the fittest. I too am one that does not like to put chemicals or such just to fight off black spot or what ever it is again agreeing with you just too ruddy expensive. If there is something that I can make with stuff in my pantry then hey I will give it a try. Enjoy your videos. Have a wonderful night.
amazing how you speak to my inner gardener!😅 I'm south of Houston zone 9b nowadays. I just purchased my 3rd clematis from Costco $20 called Fragrant Star. My previously purchased H R Young and Deborah Dahl also came from Costco. The older 2 are doing really well and I have the same plan to allow them to meander through climbing roses. However now I'm really intrigued with Belle de Woking so now on the treasure hunt for that one!😊
Hi Anita from Beaumont, Tx zone 9b I purchased a couple from Brushwood nursery on sale a couple yrs ago, Clematis Diamantia and Clematis Niobe and Duchess of Beauchard I had before, growing nicely think all are group 2 thank you for sharing, love your channel😍
This information was very helpful. I'm very fond of clematis. You have to be patient, but they are delightful! I would have at least 6 and plane to get more. I would like to have them mixed in here and there among the garden. Best wishes to you. Thanks 😊😊😊
I am in a zone 7a. I have a clematis that I do not know the name or group. I didn’t even know they had groups up until recently. I’ve been cutting it down in the fall and hoping for the best. It’s in the full shade doing great. I have a lot of beautiful purple blooms already!
Love clematis. I have a Still Waters that’s going into its 3rd season so am really anxious to see it get going. The other is (I think) Jackmanii and it’s about 15 years old and amazing. It even moved houses once.
I bought some sweat bands last spring because of heavy sweating on my head. They work well. I know I look like a dork but I don't care because I was sick of sweat running on my face. Just north of Houston.
I grow my clematis through my Rose of Sharon and large shrub roses. I grow Crystal Fountain, Nelly Moser, Olympia, Bijou and Jackmanii and Rosemoor. I love that Discovered Treasure iris. Bonny zone 5b
Love this video on clematis! Thanks so much for the review on the different groups too. I have a Sweet Summer Love clematis that I can’t wait to get a trellis for and plant it in a large container soon. Enjoyed the mini tour too…. your garden is beautiful! 🌸🌿🌼 What variety is the barberry in your side yard at 10:31?
My mom always said to bury them a bit on the deep side to protect the roots from drying out and to keep them cooler. I didn’t listen and planted mine high to prevent root rot because I have clay soil and the water table is practically at lawn level because we are surrounded by wetlands. I may try again this year. They sure are expensive little buggers and I have awful luck at bare root.. I always pick the bag or rot it seems
I'm wanting a new climbing rose and thinking about the Don Juan. Yours is so pretty, I'd love to have one like that. My Peggy Martin gets black spots really bad. I spray it with neem oil and it does seem to help
Love Clematis. I have a Monrovia Jackman Superba Clematis. Paid $24.99 at Calloway. I think this is the 3rd Season. It’s absolutely stunning this year. Thank you for sharing all the great information. I’m in Plano just a Hop Skip and Jump from you. 😂
Lov❤how your porch has turned out.. I can’t find clematis anywhere in my area of Florida but Mandavilla is easy to find..love your shade garden area..😊😊
I wear a bandanna as a sweat band and a hat when the humidity and temperature is through the roof! I am looking at clematis for this year. I’m thinking Dr Rupple. Thanks
Thank you for doing all the research and inspiring everyone to keep on growing. Perfect timing since I was trying to figure out when to prune mine. I’m in zone 8B and would like to know what kind of mulch you use. I have no idea which one to buy.
Your video is so informative. I’ve always wanted to grow clematis but there are only the purple available here. You may have already answered this question but I’m wondering if you could recommend a good online source for clematis rhizomes? Thank you, Amanda!
Jezzz here in Montréal are 7$ baby ones, $16; until 20$ and some bigger ones $45 but never more than that. I ki lol some thought before I started paying attention and let them be.
I’m gardening in a zone 8 A in the Hillcountry of central Texas near Lake Buchanan. I sit on 3/4 of an acre which previously had goats on it that ate everything to bare ground. We’ve been letting it recover over the last 2 years. Only the front yard had top soil brought in. I do have some trellises on the west side of the carport and the deck of our guesthouse. I’m wanting to use clematis since it is thornless and doesn’t get gigantic. I will be planting in large 2’x3’x18” deep wooden planter boxes my husband built. Will planting clematis behind salvia provide the roots enough shade for them to survive do you think?
Hi a few years back I had a Clematis, it had a large dark purple flower, about 12 feet, tall. bloomed in summer and it smelled like Jasmine, I've looked for another one to replace it.....any chance of knowing the name ? We lost it in a storm sadly. Ty, love your video's
Where should I look for meteor shower verbena? I’ve never seen that at any of the nurseries in frisco and Plano and I get so jealous every time I see yours!! Please, somebody in the area, point me to the right place! 😂
zone 5b (VT) I just put in an entrance arch to my greenhouse area and planted a Jackmanii on one side and a Dr.Ruppel on the other. I'm so excited. I paid too much for them at about $35ea as they were fairly large plants but I wanted some immediate coverage on the arch. The Jacmanii had buds on it already and since I transplanted it some of the leaves have shown drying and damage but the blooms are popping, since i can cut this back it should be OK? Years ago, I planted a clematis in my front yard around my well and it comes up every year but doesn't ever get bigger than maybe ten inches and never blooms. I would like to dig it up and move it but I also would like to figure out what kind of clematis it is. Do the leaves help with identification? I suppose I can relocate it and just watch it grow (hopefully) and then see what she does. Happy I found your channel! new subscriber.
Hi there! Try hitting both of the clematis with some liquid fertilizer. The newly planted one might be in shock but it should bounce back, keep it watered and shaded at the roots. The one on the well might be a smaller sized variety and that’s why it hasn’t gotten any larger!
I need your advice! I got a little overzealous and ordered some clematis off Etsy (Group 3's.) I received them today and thankfully they look ok besides a little mold on the bamboo skewers they were attached to (I know it was a bad idea to order during our 100 degree heat but couldnt help myself.) Should I plant them out or what would you recommend I do with them? lol. I should have thought this out more. The spot I have picked out receives a few hours of morning sun and then is shaded and I planned on planting them at the base of a bush and mulching well. What are your thoughts? I'm in Austin btw. Thank you! :)
I have clematis don’t know what type they are I will have to pay more attention to how they grow. I love the clematis growing on the trellis and the roses and clematis growing together. I am a new subscriber.🌸
Thanks for subbing! Hope you enjoy the channel!
Love your show. Will be applying your great tips.
Awesome and thanks!
Very helpful video! Thanks for explaining the growing specifics and the 3 groups.
Glad it was helpful!
The humidity has been REAL! I can’t wait to see all of your clematis living their best lives.
I am LOVING your shade garden 😍
Thank you so much!
I am a firm believer in having a journal that I write in. Many people think you should just keep it on your phone. I don't. I see you have a journal. Love it!
Yes I love my journal but also keep stuff on my phone … I don’t always have my journal with me so the phone is a good back up!
I’m so going to start a journal for planting!
thank you !! we needed this video cause there are barely any clematis videos here on YT beyond just showing them in full bloom! i actually replanted mine this morning in this tomato/vegetable planter w a trellis i found on sale - the roots are very strong they are resilient !!

I wear those sweatbands. They make such a difference. I care less what I look like because I am 70. lol
I definitely think I need to try them!

I’m going to order some!
Thanks Amanda for explaining Clematis 🌸

Those prices are unbelievable! I have 3 jackmanii clematis $9.99 each! And they bloom and bloom and bloom!

Linda is awesome! Taiga is a group 3 I believe.
Enjoyed learning about the different clematis and your trench solution
Thanks!
I've tried clematis 3x with no luck. I will try again from bare root next year--thanks.
Good luck!
I just bought 2 clematis this week..perfect timing🎉🌺🌸
Wonderful!
Your hard work is paying off Amanda. Garden is looking beautiful
Thank you so much!
Thank you. Zone 6 b. I feel inspired to go get a clematis. Mine have always died 😢
Yay, hope it works out for you this time around!
Wonderful! I’m going to go look those varieties up!
I want to try those. Great video. Cali girl.
Please do!
Oh we are definitely installing a French drain! Just trying to figure out if we want to do it ourselves or have someone else do it.
@@shesamadgardener oh that’s great! Yes I understand! They are so expensive! Good luck with the project!

I’m wanting to use clematis since it is thornless and doesn’t get gigantic. I will be planting in large 2’x3’x18” deep wooden planter boxes my husband built. Will planting clematis behind salvia provide the roots enough shade for them to survive do you think?
I definitely think it will provide shade for the clematis roots!
Hi a few years back I had a Clematis, it had a large dark purple flower, about 12 feet, tall. bloomed in summer and it smelled like Jasmine, I've looked for another one to replace it.....any chance of knowing the name ? We lost it in a storm sadly. Ty, love your video's
Oh wow! I don’t know the variety but hopefully someone else on here will!
Where should I look for meteor shower verbena? I’ve never seen that at any of the nurseries in frisco and Plano and I get so jealous every time I see yours!! Please, somebody in the area, point me to the right place! 😂
I bought mine at Home Grown Plants in Farmersville.
@@shesamadgardener I knew you were gonna say that 🤓! I guess I need to plan a trip 😜
zone 5b (VT) I just put in an entrance arch to my greenhouse area and planted a Jackmanii on one side and a Dr.Ruppel on the other.
Thank you! :)
If you have grow lights inside, I would keep them inside for now. If not, then plant them and check on them everyday!
The one's at walmart bloom in 8weeks after purchase for me.
Well that’s freaking amazing! I’ve never heard of bare roots producing that fast!
Do you always add manure to everything you plant? Is there any plants that you don’t add it to? I’m in a Zone 8a also but if that helps
I just did this for clematis since it is such a heavy feeder … typically I would just add the slow release fertilizer only.
Costco j\had clematis this month for $19 they were 1 foot tall.
That’s awesome!
❤❤❤i only leave hearts weh im driving

I started a couple of bare root clematis about a week ago. How long should it take to sprout?
Mine took a few weeks to break the top of the soil.
I love clematis but cannot grow it in 6B complete shade
😢
How can you tell which group your Clematis is in. I have one that I have never seen a bloom on it. I have had it for three or four years .
Hmm … if it has never bloomed and you have never pruned it, then it might bloom off of new growth which means you DO need to prune it. Or vise versa.
Where do you get 20ft trellis for clematis? All the trellis are just 8 ft tall
I have no idea … typically for a large vine like that, you would use wire and create your own structure to support it.
Can I plant clematis in the end of May? I’m zone 7.
Sure!
Aldi have them for Five dollars. Michigan
That’s amazing! Was it bare root?
👍
