For a service car on an electric railway, wouldn't it have been more practical to be gas-powered? And wouldn't a metal body have been safer? Your work & spirit are the best.
Remember those old compressors well, chugga chugga chugga...Is it a Westinghouse DH25 ? We had loads of em on the DC fleet of Southern Region EMU cars I worked on. Growling gears, dynamotors whirring, happy days. Some old English Electric traction motors and old DH25's live on in newer trains built using salvaged parts from the old ones. Alas not for much longer I'm told.
River Huntingdon it has a GE CP 30 compressor under the no. 2 end hood on tbe deck. Originally, it probably had a GE as well, but it was under the deck on the left side in a cradle-mount behind the ladder
A CP30 ? That's a very familiar machine from my days on London Transport. They were fitted to the old Standard Stock tube cars, also the CO/CP surface cars built 1937/41, and also the MetroVick locos used on the Metropolitan line. Sarah Siddons ,number 17, survives to this day and runs from time to time. We used the CP30 on the Southern Railway which preceeded the Southern Region of BR. I always thought these might be GE machines of American design ! Look up Standard Stock on the Isle of Wight, some were used there after service with LT, and you can clearly hear the CP30s, and the Clack Clack POP Bang ! Contactors. Lovely characterful old trains the older electrics. Nearly all gone now sadly, but the Island still runs ex LT 1938 tube cars !
River Huntingdon This gem was built in 1906 in Laconia, NH. It is one of only two of this style that have survived in North America. The other is in British Columbia but had a roof colapse on it some years ago...not clear whether it will be restored. Our locomotive survived becsuse it was used in a small mill town community...last operated in 1947. The CP-30 was most certainly installed because it was available...they weren't concerned with original replacement.
Gorgeous restoration!
Good work to investigate interferences before they bite you.
Looks like a really nice museum site too.
Cool little steeple cab! I'm glad she was restored! I liked the sparks at 1:49!
