Why the Switch 2 Needed the Steam Deck

  • Here's why the Switch 2 needed Valve's Steam Deck. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be launching in a very different world to its predecessor. Powerful PC based handhelds like the Steam Deck, and cloud gaming services like GeForce Now, have expanded on the Nintendo Switch dream of full fat games on the go... which can only benefit the Switch 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2 specs have yet to be revealed but leaks suggest a huge Switch 2 upgrade, including 3x the RAM and some kind of Switch 2 DLSS analog, allowing Nintendo to catch up with its competitors, and it's very likely that many games on the original switch will instantly benefit from the extra performance available.
However, all we've seen so far on Switch 2 is a new Mario Kart (Mario Kart 9?), and that footage might not even be representative of the final game, so it's difficult to make any calls about the system's capabilities at this stage.

Why the steam Deck needed the Switch 1. Thank you Nintendo.

Nintendo never needed Steamdeck to make hardware/integrated hardware.. but design and idea of handheld goes back to "games & watch" in the 80's ..
Valve needed Steamdeck as a portable handheld as a differentiator in PC gaming market .. YES..
but handheld Origin is not the point of the video ..
This video is more oriented on what pc market provides and what Nintendo doesn't .. Meaning Nintendo must now take those into account when making its new console too.
      1. PC ports: Nintendo needed the Steamdeck so any PC game could be handheld compatible, meaning PC gaming industry now take handheld market into account while making a game considering hardware and controls and compatibility. It is not perfect yet, but handheld is now a real sub section of PC gaming, so it can't be ignored.
So it facilitate switch ports it is a win for Nintendo users !
      2. Performance: Nintendo with this iteration also takes that into account with hardware that can handle PC gaming with less compromises while maintaining battery life thanks to AI upscaling.
For Nintendo, the Steamdeck performance is probably the minimum they should deliver in term of "displayed performance" (they could use lower hardware for cost/battery life reasons but having tailored made games for the platform, lower res upscaled will help to deliver that and perhaps more at a correct price).
      3. game compatibility & "portability": What Valve brings is also full compatibility with previous gen of games (very old games included) and play anywhere with cloud saves..
Switch 1 games not playable on switch2 could have been possible without Steamdeck.
But with Steamdeck available it would look bad for Nintendo to do so .. not that it would hurt its sales ..
      but ...
When you're the only one on the market, you can impose things ..
When there is competition (even small), you think a bit more on how the consumer would accept it.
ALL OF THIS IS A WIN FOR NINTENDO USERS :) .. soo everyone enjoy Switch 2 ! .. even if a small but interesting bit of PC gaming vision is injected in the mix .. that's a FULL GAIN not a loss !
PS: As a side note: Valve officially said on Steamdeck launch, they learned and follow one thing from Nintendo and will take that way further .. "They want to make fully integrated hardware and software to give its user the best experience possible"... but in a more open way.
It means they want to make it as easy to use as Nintendo products with optimization on hardware and software (including drivers,Os and full hardware control, even game fixes etc ..) while allowing user to thinker if they want (they don't limit how consumers use the hardware).. so it is a situation "between PC and consoles": trying to keep best of both worlds in one integrated product.

Steam Deck and it's verification process could not have existed, and the potential impact for Switch 2 would not change one iota. It's hard for us to accept that the rest of the world isn't as infatuated with Steam Deck as us core gamers are, and that includes the development community also. The popularity of Steam has not necessarily translated to their handheld, nor are developers incentivized to specifically target Steam Deck for development - something deck verification can not change.
Having a hand-full of games that go a bit further in meeting certain criteria for Steam Deck is a FAR CRY from games being build ground up for it. In other words, you can take Steam Deck completely out of the equation, and the Switch 2 situation is the same - that is; if the game is running on low-mid range PC and/or current consoles, it's a good chance it could end up on the Switch 2, so long as the publishers sees potential sales on the table. Not to take any credit from what the SD has achieved in its space (kicking the PC handheld revolution into full gear), but current consoles are a far bigger indicator of WAY MORE of what could trickle down to Switch 2 because, unlike Steam Deck, developers actually target those consoles as lead platforms. Steam Deck is running what games it will run, and many games on Steam will never see the light of day on Switch 2, no matter how comparable the hardware.

Deck verification has been a very big deal and a real boon for indie devs. AAA ones with their hundreds of gigs worth of unoptimised game were never really going to target the Deck (though there are other handhelds that have targeted them), & the whole point was not to build games specifically for the Deck but to let you take your PC games with you. That's why it has the same store as desktops & laptops.
I think Nintendo had a good thing with the Switch early on, but then somebody saw all the profit that Steam makes & decided to let any old crap onto the Switch too except without making it work properly or allowing you to filter through all the gack & hentai. Verification that some time has been put in by the devs to make sure it ticks all these boxes is important too (and there are thousands upon thousands of those, not a handful) because it also helps to weed out the crap. Hopefully it will have pushed Nintendo to do better with their store for the sequel, because it really is a nightmare trying to go back to the Switch when you have a Steam Deck.

Yeah deck verification isn't needed for switch 2. If anything it's the fact developers are trying to work for handheld that's the big deal.

It's a nice sentiment. But I would just credit the hardware advancements and the passage of time for any change in perception and expectation for what you can get from handheld gaming. The esteem given to steam deck verification and cloud services is a bit romanticized, I'd love it to be true that dev teams are giving it some agency and a new standard/consensus is forming. As far an I am aware you just need the game to be playable to be verified, so even if verified it can't really be an indicator of any specific game design choices made for portable devices.

No, it needs to be playable, have controls compatible with the Steam Deck out of the box with the correct input elements, must have legible text, & any HUD/UI elements also have to scale & arrange themselves properly for handheld play at the native resolution It also has to be supported by Proton unless Linux native & needs to make proper use of the onscreen keyboard whenever needed.

The steam deck has only sold 3 million units and as of 2025 no updates so more then likely Switch 2 would more then likely do 10 million at the end of the year do to Mario Kart being a system seller if it is a launch title or launching during the systems first year on the market.
A lot of gamers imply the new PC handheld's as these are selling like hot cakes but if you ask a non gamer they wouldn't know what it is and Sony isn't worried about PS5 given how well that thing is selling so it's mostly a Sony and Nintendo market outside of PC gaming
