New York is known as the birth place of fly fishing in the US and a state I’ve had my eyes on for a while. Between the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and everything in between, New York has an overwhelming amount of good trout water. Recently I was able to spend 3 days fly fishing and exploring New York, and it did not disappoint.
In this video I spent 3 days exploring New York, which wasn't nearly enough time. On Day one I was able to tour the @CortlandLineCompany facility and see how the fly line and tippet is made along with some of their other line and gear. On day two I floated a well known tailwater and struggled big time, which I guess comes with the territory. You can't always catch big fish when visiting a new state. Either way it was fun and I should give a huge shout out to Chris and Matt over at cortland for showing me around.
On day 3 I decided to make the trip up to the Adirondacks just to visit an area I have had on my bucket list for a long time. The Adirondacks are a special place, and getting to fly fish for New York's state fish, the native brook trout, and catch a few was a blessing. The weather fought me the entire way but that's why they call it fishing I guess. I was also able to Catch a few little wild brown trout which was an extra treat.
Thank you so much for watching and I'll catch you on the next video!

Dude! Sick edit, was a fun rainy day adventure! We will have to get even deeper into the backcountry next time! Tight lines 🎣
Thanks man!!
NY has to be one of the best states to fish no matter what you fish for.
Dont know about that. Theres a few good spots but tons of illegals keeping over there limit
@@hunterbarrett5182 the little brown people scare you? Don’t cry
Eh. Lacks in the warmwater department. Bass don't get very big, catfish don't get very big. Pretty much all the warmwater species you can catch in NY are small.
@@austin27049 what are you talking about. Multiple century belts where given out at last year’s Elite on the St Lawrence and 20 a day didn’t even get you in the money! 30 lb bags win one day events there as well as Cayuga and Onieda!
@@edwardcowan7012 There's lots of fish for sure, but the size is lacking compared to well, pretty much anywhere else.
Quite a nice adventure - many thanks for sharing it with us!
Glad you enjoyed
Great video. Next time you get up here you have to hit the Catskill area. Great streams, great towns that revolve around trout/flyfishing and great streams.
Yep that's the plan!!
Welcome to NY, dude! Fun to see you two hooting it up together! Glad that beaver didn't find ya 😂
Well well boys welcome to my stomping grounds. If you guys decide to come back this way i live on the New York Vermont border and can show you guys around and take you to some amazing fishing spots for browns rainbows and brook trout.
Everything is so green! Beautiful spots & trouters
That’s so cool! Lived in drum for 3 years and never thought there’d be good fly fishing any where around. Gonna have to get back for a visit.
Got that exact same jacket and use it for fishing in the cold weather too. Another awesome video, just discovered your page and can’t enough. Thanks for all your work in putting out these great videos, tight line !
Awesome video! The dacks never disappoint. Anything south of plattsburgh in the Adirondacks has endless streams that have healthy populations of trout. Come back, go deeper and you'll find the monsters.
Hardman fishing adventure time is the best time of the evening :) I absolutely love your videos guys there are just insane ! Please never stop the good work :)
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoy the videos!!
I was hoping to see a video from you fishing New York. The first spot next to the bridge is about a 5 minute walk from my place on the other side of the hill on the east branch. I've seen much bigger browns caught out of that spot. I also head up to the adirondacks and have caught some heritage strain native brookies there and fish the Finger Lakes and southern tier creeks as well. If your you come back, and area looking for a place to stay, let me know. I can also point you to a few blue lines in the area.
blue lines in the southern tier🤔 i live in the southern tier and can’t find any of the good ones… all my honey holes are in the catskills 2 hour drive away
Nice video dude, looks like you had a fun time. That mysterious fish you caught looked a lot like what we call a Chub in Wales.
I grew up in the Adirondacks and didn’t realize what a awesome thing I took for granted until I moved out of the state. A few miles in any direction and I was on trout waters a lot of people would kill for
Awesome, glad you're getting some notoriety
Great looking water! Cortland is always my first choice.
Really cool seeing you two fish together....
Sweet I'm pumped more people are checking out the Dacks. It took me 15 years of huckin flies and finally got a 15" wild stream hatched brookie. Come back again!!!!!
Adirondacks are my absolute favorite place to go. Need to do some pond fishing for some BIG brookies! Great vid.
Mosquitoes think of my blood as a fine wine as well. There was a study written about in Prevention magazine which talked about the colors to wear which are least likely to attract mosquitoes. Also, a video from the Weather Channel app talked about how mosquitoes HATE the smell of coconut. I wanna come fly fish with you someday soon. From your videos, I can tell you know how to enjoy yourself. 😇
Great video man those are some beautiful fish
Great video as always. These waters up here are loaded with beautiful trout and lots of monsters.
Awesome footage!
Love the video this is literally in my back yard and it is awesome to see content from my area
A big thank you to Dan for turning me onto your videos! So glad you guys hooked up and had an extremely special outing on an adk. backcountry trout stream. How can you beat adk. Native brookies and browns all in one secluded stream. They might not see any or maybe a few humans in their lifetime. Gotta start following you and go back and check out more of your archive of vids! As always, tightlines out there you now have another subscriber!
That's awesome!! Welcome to the channel!
Nice fishing trip. Thanks for sharing a bucket list adventure with us. Love the scenery along the creek. Keep them coming! God Bless n Fish on!
Nice video enjoy watching both of you the Delaware is tough can’t wait to get back up there I know there’s some nice fish in there
Great upstate video. Beautiful waters.
Glad you enjoyed!
Great video, beautiful waters and fish! How about in your videos giving a quick rundown on gear used, rigging, flies, etc. for us newbies trying to learn and be successful? Much appreciated Jon!
This video is just awesome. Good for you, Jon. The creek was elusive and the beaver 🦫 dam pond was fantastic watching you. I was hoping you might pull out a monster hiding. And then the switch turned on the river and that's how it really is because I've fished different rivers and you might not catch for a few hours or have to wait till the barometric pressure changes and then the switch comes on. Loved watching y'all catch and have a good time. The Adirondack fishing is on my bucket list. Can't wait for the next video and always tight lines. Tony
Thank Tony!! Thanks for the support as always
you should come up to British Columbia sometime! Amazing scenery and awesome fly fishing.
Yes, a Fallfish. Little creek behind my house used to produce them to 17 inches !!
That's pretty big!!
Nice!
im from new york right at the foot of Adirondacks. i only drive 20 mins to adks and the brook and rainbow trout fishing up here is nuts. the fish always bite and have amazing colors hit me up ill tell ya some places no cell service monster trout amazing mtns. i am 24 and its awesome to see young people fish an enjoy the outdoors! not much of that anymore..
Fun to see some familiar waters. Was just up in that area for the 4th of July week. Fun vid!
Glad you enjoyed!!
NY has some very underrated fisheries you should come up north for the steelhead
Jon-Thank you for showing the beautiful part of our State!
I'll be back before too long I hope!! Such an awesome area!
Loving the stache
Had to do something different LOL
Great video, man! I've heard new York has some decent trout fishing waters.
Upstate NY is not far from me :) Enjoyed, thanks for sharing 😀🎣🎣
Thanks for watching!!
Cant believe i lived in the northern adirondacks for 20 years and didnt really get into fly fishing til i moved to colorado
LOL it's funny how things work out isn't it? Thanks for watching!
Bieng totally honest there isnt a lot of fly fisherman that even live in the northern adirondacks 😂😂😂
There's not a lot of people that live there in general lol
Man.. great content. I’m from Rochester and know the state well. I think my favorite part about your videos is your vocabulary. When most people would use a cuss word you tend to use a word like “stinks”, or “crappy”. The older I get the more I find myself saying the same things. I think we all have a friend or two that can’t seem to construct a sentence without an F bomb in it tho… 🤷♂️🤦♂️😂
If you liked it there you really need to visit Maine, some of the best Brooke trout fishing in the country
Oh I know... one day
That was a fallfish. They are great bait for bass, pike and catfish!
Love this content dude! Keep it up!
I plan on it!!
Try fishing West Canada Creek near Utica. Outstanding trout fishing.
Keep posting euro nymphing vids! They’re awesome 😊
Love fishing NY, I live in Jersey but the ride isn't so bad, sometimes I go up for a weekend trip with my dad and its always a blast!
Jon, that first spot looked like the bridge at Hancock over the west branch of the Delaware. I've fished there many years ago.
Right down the street from my place. I live in the beaverkill
I've fished at that first bridge several times, seems like there are always trout there, fly and spin. I HIGHLY recommend trying another float on that river, but wait until water is being released form the reservoir, and throw some big streamers for monster browns.
Now THAT sounds like a good time!
New York has the best fisheries in all the united states. Trout can be caught in nearly every region of the state and the DEC maintains excellent populations of both brown and brook trout.. I have lived in Western NY but have fished statewide. To outsiders: Buffalo: the Lake Erie steelhead migration is unlike any other place. Millions of 20+ lb fish with so many tributaries. Lake Erie : small mouth bass - phenomenal. Olcott: serious king salmon runs- with fish up to 40 lbs caught regularly. Catskills/ADK: the most pristine and hidden brookie streams with crystal clear waters. NY/PA line-mid summer catfish are a fun challenge but get huge. Finger lakes- monster lake trout/pike are common place. St. Lawrence river/upstate- best Muskie fishing in the world hands down. World record Muskie at 69 lbs was caught here. Paddlefish/sturgeon also are caught here in large numbers.
If you love fishing- NY will never disappoint.
Im from maine and live in New Hampshire in the white mountain its beautiful here man and fishing is great keep the videos comeing
That's next on the list!!!! I've been inspired to do a north east tour
Well man if you make it this way would be nice to fish with you man good luck
I'd hope a 'special trout pond' is for wild brook trout. Brown trout are simply an invasive species.
Great vid per usual...just got back from the Bighorns in WY doing some backcountry camping and flyfishing. Have you guys ever been? Brookies for days...w no pressure from any other anglers.
Nope never have!
Waw❤
Come to the mitten sometime!
Great vid! I’m new to NY would u mine sharing your rig. What weight rod. Floating line. What flies are working that day. Nymphs with a dropper but more detail appreciated 🎣😎
Enjoyed this one again….
Always wondering about your gear? Rod? What is that? Thanks bro.
ten mile river is really good big browns
what flys do you use
Need to hit oak orchard while you're there and try you're luck at a big brownie
What kind of rod and reel do you have in the video at 2.30???
Damn, you were in my town and I didn't even know
What stream or river??? what good is filming or watching ny streams for the most part are not overcrowded!!!!?????
Hey hardman have u ever been to michigan??
Moose River on first part of video?
Are you tight line Nymphing?
depends on what part of the video! But yes I was sometimes
is Maine next
Hey bud. Love what your doing! How can I get ahold of you to ask a couple questions about fly fishing?
Email is probably best if I'm being honest
Bridge looks familiar, what is it?
It's a bridge
@@hardmanfishing I bet that fish you caught once you called a “fish”:)
First of all, that bridge gets hammered 24/7/365 so to pull out a few fish from that spot, i thought you did pretty well. Better than most people!
I think you would have enjoyed walking away from the parking area and into some pools and riffles that get a little less pressure, from waders at least. I hope you come back and explore the other access points.
Oh I did, I just didn't catch anything. AND I floated the entire bottom section the next day anyway. The fishing just wasn't great at that time, and that's not me saying that... I heard that from people who fish it routinely. So I'm not bothered nor upset by the river, I'll be back at some point
@@hardmanfishingnot exactly sure when you took this video but I spent a whole 8 days on that river from June 16 to June 25 and the fishing WAS very slow the whole week. The only time it picked up was at 8PM, an hour before dark.
I would love to see you and your bro pull out some big ones here.
you in my6 neck of the woods. will get u into some beasts next time you head north
I’m from New York great fishing up here no one really knows about. There goes our honey holes lmao jk
You're a small creek flyfisherman, but sometimes you'd better stay at the main river, John...
Do cortland weightforward floating lines ACTUALLY FKING FLOAT!? having a PILL of a time getting a floating line that ACTUALLY floats. Rio lines, SA lines.....all junk janky cheap maxcatch lines for 9 dollars are better so far. -(
I've had that problem. I've been told to make sure that your leader is floating.
Talk about your rig more
Yeah....fishing in our NYS waters is the worst bro. Best bet is to never even come out here again.
Can’t wait to come back and make a series 😂
@@hardmanfishing lol Awesome! Looking forward to seeing it.
Great a hold of me next time you’re in cortland if you want to catch some BIG browns (24-26”)
Got that exact same jacket and use it for fishing in the cold weather too. Another awesome video, just discovered your page and can’t enough. Thanks for all your work in putting out these great videos, tight line !
