- Mass games or mass gymnastics are a form of performing arts or gymnastics in which large numbers of performers take part in a highly regimented performance that emphasizes group dynamics rather than individual prowess. Because of the vast scale of the performance, with often tens of thousands of performers, mass games are performed in stadiums, often accompanied by a background of card-turners occupying the seats on the opposite side from the viewers. Mass games are typically used to emphasize themes of political propaganda. They developed alongside 19th century nationalist movements, particularly the Czech Sokol movement, as they embodied youth, strength, militarism, and unity.[citation needed]
Today, mass games are regularly performed only in North Korea, where they take place to celebrate national holidays such as the birthdays of rulers Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. In recent years, they have been the main attraction of the Arirang Festival in Pyongyang. The 2004 film A State of Mind details the training of two young girls from Pyongyang who perform in the mass games.
Truly spectacular...
Does embody the skill and discipline to put such effort into the performance. It is phenomenal. Like nothing else on earth.
I do hope to be able to one day attend such a glorious event in the beautiful DPRK
🇰🇵
Could you imagine how insanely overblown their opening ceremony would be if the Olympic games were held in North Korea?
China did it right at the 2008 Olympics. I feel that North Korea would make it less of a national display of skill and more of a "look what I can make my people do" type thing
Congrats...NK did it so magnificently. By far, it is unquestionably the most spectacular show ever! That reflects both absolute unity and fantastic shownanship. Those flying acrobats are definitely the dare-devils.
Regardless of whether you like North Korea or not, the Arirang Mass Games are simply breathtaking, and an amazing accomplishment.
It is pretty much exactly the same as most Olympic opening ceremonies and is a well executed example of that style of performance.
Really a wonderful gymnastic event with the highest synchronization in rhythm and movement, our congratulations from Arequipa, Peru.
This is the kind of thing I can imagine our fallout-riddled semi-literate grandchildren would find being broadcast on the last remaining 80s tv set, clinging to its looped broadcast as the only source of humanity in the post-nuclear west.
@cx1735- Damn, dude...
all you people shit talk about north korea, but this is an amazing perfomance whatsoever. imagine americans try this, it would take 6 generations of chosen people to do this. you can laugh all you want, but you cant sync your fingers to play games correctly
+maki jezakon, god damn is that the most idiotic thing you could ever come up with ?
Putting something like this together take hours of pratice and I can appreciate the work and talent it takes to put something like this together. To be chosen to be part of something like this in N Korea is a hugh honor and in N Korea honor is everything.
It's like N korea got stuck in a time stop field
their performances are very entertaining! gotta love and appreciate many cultures and their diversities!
Great Team Work.
Thanks Marshal Weir.
I want to be there to witness this amazing production..!!!!!
It would have been better if there were no commentary and longer scenes.
Arirang... yes we have seen that now a thousand times. Don't they have anything else to watch in that place?
No money for special effects so they use people...
Realmente un evento gimnástico maravilloso con la mas alta sincronización en ritmo y movimiento, nuestras felicitaciones desde Arequipa-Perú.
Really do love these colourized 1950's newsreels.
Cool.
Now, what about the hunger in North Korea?
Este povo é incrivelmente fantástico. Queria saber como eles treinam tanta gente milimétricamente com tanta precisão nos movimentos. Extraordinário isso.
This makes me wowed and sad at the same time. Seriously, most of the people in North Korea are actually starving due to loss of crop and poverty and still their government invests in these over the top performances and extravaganzas. In addition, it definetely seems that North koreans have very little rights and the freedom of speech is nonexistent. These people have to train for weeks, months, while their families are starving. Spirit lifting for the performers, isn't it?
This is the definition of insanity.
flx2525 You're the definition of insanity.
Gotta give it to the NK. This looks like it would be one hell of a show.
Hell is the right word.
Hi whats the intro song called it's beautiful.
This is very impressive. All these haters need to buzz off and stop criticising the regime. They are more talented than your average amerimutt in this day of age.
Hey, i see that the North Korean is the best of these "Massive shows" in our world, this is amazing.
There is also a cauldron-lighting ceremony without the torch lighter!
Nice Show!
I know what you mean but... year 101. The "Great Leader" (Kim II Sung), who died 1994, was born in 1912. So that would be the first year of North Korea's new calendar, created in 1997.
Weird, huh?
If one of the guys on the gigantic panel misses the timing of the animation, he becomes a dead pixel, if you know what I mean.
This is amazing to the point that it's scary...like how young are those kids again? and all of those splits at the same time O.o just seriously scary...to me all it symbolizes is that either the kids really wanted to perform well (which I highly doubt), or they are forced or threatened to perform well....
Awsome!
Actually, those who participate in this are probably incredibly loyal to the regime and proud of what they do in the games.
I spent a minute trying to pause the video but just kept going....
It must be great to live in North Korea.
I hope you're being sarcastic. NK is a terrible place.
The Kind Gamers
Was it too subtle?
WarpRulez Yeah, a little bit. :|
No matter how rich or how hard you work ur, all ur money belongs to a big fat big named Kim jong un
And then you notice the stadium is at least 80% empty
To think something that sophisticated is happening in north Korea is amazing !
The very first song that plays when you see the crowd is Arirang.
Fantastic !
@screw4998 You loved it so much that you decided to move to Canada. Why didn't you move to China or North Korea if it is such a lovely place?
If they could be hired... I could create the greatest flashmob ever.
wow, its like an entirely different world, and it makes me think the person who orders all of this to be done must get a crazy power trip from it.
waaaawww it's amazing
I love it
@TheJRPGgamer Actually, Only the coach took the blame. He was sent to Yodok and the rest of the players went back to their clubs as usual. North Korea had the exact same squad in the 2011 Asian Cup.
the amouth of irony made me cry
Bravo Korea! Beautiful!
highly regimented performance highly regimented lifestyle all must conform all must conform all must perform yes i can see this is a perfect little world and I'm so glad it's yours and not mine.I couldn't live inside lines they draw.I couldn't breath or create or build or live off of the land or out on the road.I gotta have freedom. I gotta be me. I gotta follow my fate,my destiny, that which is meant to be.Do you think that all these beautiful young people will benefit from learning these dance steps? don't you need doctors, farmers, reasearch technicians, mechanics, chefs, teachers? I don't think they all can be professional dancers-not for the rest of their careers. I wish you all the best
"Sousand Perfurmers ... "
@nuhii Why did you leave in the first place?
was I the only one getting kinda nervous between 7:39 and 8:20 when the performers would be falling but the camera would always change before they 'landed' o.o
Awesome!
...or the thought that anyone who misses a step/screws up, might never see the light of day again.
Yo, Korea, I'm really happy and I'mma let you finish, but Japan has one of the best cultures of all time. OF ALL TIME!
Aw man, where's pt 2?
In fact, until the song at 3:20, everything is Arirang.
Oh my God!! I just saw a performance of a thousands of puppet intertainers doing forced intertaining at its finest. Me, as a tourist, can not bare to watch that show knowing majority of the performers have no choice but to perform even though it is not thier passion.
"Purrfurmers" lol
because that song was actually based on the traditional korean folk song called........ guess what? arirang.
Can't remember the last time I saw this in America..
Can you imagine the line waiting to piss after this performance?
i'm the 217,000 viewer... creeeepy....
who wants to bet that the flaming thing at 2:22 is actually an ICBM?
So...um, has anyone every dropped anything ever and what happened to that person?
Does anyone know the actual intro song's name?
Who needs giant screens when you can make 50.000 people stand perfectly straight for hours on end with 50-some large colored cards in their hands
That's funny because isn't Arirang symbolic of reunification
und hinter dem Gigantischen Bild im Hintergrund hocken 100'000 Kinder mit farbigen platten.... ^^ Sooo schöön :-// OMG steckt die Energie besser in was sinnvolles!!!!
Still very beautiful show
I meant the song that plays from 0:00 - 0:17
It's a real once in a lifetime opportunity..
What happens to the one who puts a foot wrong by mistake?
"...faces the world as a dignified nation" Dignified. Right.
"Their bountiful production of meat and eggs." Mmmhm. And the thousands of starving people.
....I wish I could see this live....
I dont think you want that
the best !
What's that song 2:39 in? It finishes at 2:55? Help!
South Korea: Yeah, but we have kpop. LOL
Wow. Amazing, absoulutly amazing. Why cant Americans do something like this? Why is is Communist countries like China and North Korea are better at these things than us? There didnt seem like a whole lot of people in the audience, I dnt understand all of Korea and foreign diplomats should be seeing this, EPIC and pretty colors and props to the performers.
Probably had a firing squad ready for anyone who messed up
I was waiting for Kim Jong Il to descend a giant staircase in the middle singing.
ps: 7:01
Anyone in this performance making a mistake will be tortured. Same as happens in practice and training.
he who fails gets deleted from the system, no wonder why theyre so in sync
4.47.........are they programmable?
1.14. That's how long I lasted; after that the feeling that I might vomit became too strong.
music from 8:53 till 9:15 could also be oldschool star trek - enterprise music
let me check my mandatory government calander for Sunday - hurray! i get to go to work again!
the thousands of drones look very hungry
David Boson One grain of rise, per one performance.
.
at least they have only one fatty in their entire country!
he's way better at english than I am at Korean!!!
A country which has overcome all it's obstacles? Really? One of those costumes could feed a family for a day.
FUCK.... THAT IS SOME BALLS HE'S GOT TO GO THROUGH A HOOP THAT HIGH!
super
Really wonderful performance by the children and adults. Love to watch it.
The only really horrible part is the narrator. He sounds like the narrators of the Nazi propaganda movies of WWII.
no faulty pixels there :)
Beautiful.
Whaoh this looks like the 60's.. They are struck in time...
Mnogo dobro!
wonderfull
2:59 Elastic nads?
