    Thank you, great job! I’m looking to buy a 42 with Double cabin which will work possibly better since I’m singlehanding. Why not create simple covers with a drawstring or shock cord in the hem for the vent? I also bet you could put traditional Dorade vents in those spots. Looking forward to following your next adventures!

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  5 месяцев назад +1

      The trash is next to the seat across from the galley on the side. It is attached with a clever little system with an elastic cord to ensure it doesn’t move when sailing. Previous owner designed that and it works great for us!

    Another great video. Thanks for the tour, I have been watching for a while and happy to say that I just purchased a 1992 Catalina 42 same layout as yours. I felt that I knew a lot more about the boat going into the purchase because of watching your videos. While I am not sure I will be sailing to Hawaii anytime soon I will be now coastal cruising on the California coast. Safe travels to both of you.

    experience. Sailing her was so much fun.

    Your boat originally came with standard cowl vents, they obviously were replaced with those Marinco solar vents, which apparently are not that good… if not mistaken, you can switch the blades, so you can use them to extract or pull in some air …. The one in the head obviously should extract air…

    A spring rod would work great to keep you things from tumbling off.

    those solar fans don't work, get rid of them and put wind scoops in for sure.

    Hi! Just discovered your channel. Great tour! We have a 94 C42 and she has done a
    circumnavigation with previous owners and is fully set up for off-grid. The C42’s are an exceptional and FAST offshore boat despite many saying she’s not “bluewater” spec. We sailed the Indian Ocean last year during the monsoon season with sustained 30knot+ winds and 5m seas and she was amazing. We are cutter rig with inmast furler which we aren’t a fan of 😅
    Note: Your vents should have originally been cowl vents, which is what we have and they will give more ventilation than those solar ones (and don’t leak!)
    Hope to see you out on the seas one day. Fair winds from SY Freya hull #441 ❤

    Great video and really nice boat. Currently on a 36 but I got my eye on a 42 long-term. You can replace all the solar fans with the new ones, should be a direct replacement and they have a switch where you can do intake outtake and off. Wind Scoops only work when it's windy

    Yes, I think the 42 is the best size Catalina has for coastal cruising or more. I actually like the single berth on starboard side and then, storage on the port side but, you have the option to open that port side into a berth where I would not. I also like the pullman berth up forward with that large head/shower; I would use them exactly as you explained. Nice boat. Curious, did it handle well in heavy weather during your passage ? I think a full battened main with a stack pack and lazy jacks would be better but, that's just me.

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! We love the boat designs you mentioned for those very reasons! Held very well in tough weather. We had one time where the sail temporarily got stuck going in, but it was fixed pretty quickly! So far we can’t complain!

    Great boat tour. Love your boat. I have the baby sister to the 42, the Catalina 390 and love it. Catalina’s are well built boats and also sails well. Like you, I also have the 3 cabins and use one as our garage. It keeps to boat tidy especially on passages. The vents are solar vents. I only have one but it’s under the dodger so I don’t have the water problem. You can change to the cowl vent or dorade box vent. Fair winds and following seas!

      Awe-a baby sister! 🥺 what’s our baby sister’s name? And thank you- we love the 3 berth set up. I also love the idea of calling it out “garage.” That’s much cooler than “storage unit.”

    A very interesting video. I am pretty sure those round solar vents are broken. From time to time use both heads. if left unused seals can dry or stick and then when you do need it, project time.

    does that tracking system work with 130, 150 genoas?

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  8 месяцев назад

      Not sure if it would work with other Genoa sizes. Ours is made for our 110% jib. But I’m sure they can custom make them depending on the boat and sail size

    • @gatesstephens4376
      @gatesstephens4376 8 месяцев назад

      No. They will need jib tracks for an overlapping head sail. That boat however is not really designed for a overlapped headsail. Code sails and assymeterics for off aind work.

    As someone who knows less than nothing about sailing , this was a very informative video about how after quite a lengthy passage you’ve studied considered and setup your new boat.
    it’s been very interesting watching the run up to the crossing the abortive attempt and then the final crossing with all its challenges
    Very well done.
