The original was all about Yachie's ability to persuade anyone under her will, so it was slow and calculating. This one is Yachie as the matriarch of the Kiketsu Family, cunning and ready to strike at any moment. The song instantly jumps at you and never lets up the tempo like an apex predator chasing its prey.
So I'm gonna go ahead and say that out of all the returning themes this one got the biggest glow up. Like the old one is far from bad but the punchiness behind this version allows this theme to reach peak. Feels a lot more action-packed which is probably intentional. Last time you were being led on by a mysterious stranger now we get a closer look at a family head at work
It’s CRAZY how a few things, (more pronounced percussion, choir, and bass) changed this theme from just good to me in Touhou 17 to actually my favorite song in the whole darn GAME I can’t believe I doubted the Yachie believers!
My theory why her tail touch everyone's face : her ability is to enforce other people against their own will (canon from before), translated in symbols, she intrude your spirit/face by force against you. Yea or nah? The only one not having this is the gremlin Yuuma since she is sitting, pretty odd no?
I always wonder why people did not like the original of this one so much (besides the bad percussion that's been in the last few games). I really loved the original. This one doesn't have that melancholy and lonely feeling
As someone who absolutely loved Touhou 17 OST, Yachie's theme is my least favorite as it felt like it was lacking something, an oomph perhaps. It was fitting for the character and I still liked it but I always thought there could be more. This arrange pretty much solved its problems completely, making it sound a little more dangerous and sinister while having its own personality still befitting of the character and is just much nicer to listen to in general.
My interpretation, is that as Zun stated, she was a 4th boss. He had to create a music fitting for a 4th stage boss, but she's still the head of one of the families. She mean business, but she couldn't just "outmusic" Keiki. Not only that, she was in no demanding position in that game; she had to be portraied as enigmatic, but powerful, but for that plot at least, in need. Here, basically Zun could reimagine her theme closer to a "last boss" feel. I still loved the first version of her theme, but I knew it had a lot of untapped potential..... I am not gonna lie, I still feel it does, but from the three head of the families, I feel this one had the most upgrade in general, reflecting how now she is in closer footing to Saki and Yuuma.

鬼形獣の時と比べていい意味で緊迫感がなくなったように感じる。あの時の八千慧は失敗が許されない大博打をしていたからその緊張感が曲に現れてたのかも。
とにかく獣王園の八千慧さんは戦争を楽しんでいてかわいかった。

意外と三組長の仲が悪くないのもあるけど三組長が全員赤い目なのは意図的だと思ってた
東方は割と目の色大事にしてるので（魔理沙が目の色赤から戻らないとか）鬼形獣の時も何か考えがあって赤にしてたのはありそう。
改めて見ると くろこま早鬼の目は鬼形獣の時点で赤というより茶色っぽく見える
鬼形獣やちえは切羽詰まった状況かつ逆らう気を失わせる能力を発動させていたから赤い目なのかも

I feel the opposite, I feel like the song lost most of its oomph from the original.
I adore how much stronger and frantic the bass is this time.

mayhaps. Both are very good. Id say this one is crisper and has some rougher synths. Small changes that do a lot imo

But this version of the music is uncomfortable for my ears.
