Might have been ol' George Lucas himself, he was pretty neurotic about wording.
I remember sometimes kenner would put stickers over the proof of purchase symbol and if you carefully peeled it off then put it on another part of the package you could get two P.O.P's from one toy. I don't remember what we mailed them away for. Probably something my brothers wouldn't let me play with anyway.
My grandpa used to call condoms congermens...💁♂️
Actually, the playset was the Droid Factory.
Thanks Junkman! I got this playset for Christmas eve when I was little. I was sad that it didn't come with R2 D2 because I saw him on the box. So my dad went into his bedroom and came out with an R2 eraser. He was close enough to the actual Kenner figure, so I was VERY happy. This video brought back a great childhood memory! I still have the Klattu up on my shelf.
Wow. Your dad sounds like a great guy!
The eraser probably looked more like R2 than the toy did. I guess his features were too detailed so the head looked more basic than the real thing.
You can use lighter fluid to soak stickers on cardboard. It dissolves the glue and evaporates completely. It doesn't harm cardboard or printing.
Diabolik771 wish i knew what when i opened up some of my cool hot wheels lol
Works every time.
You slapped a video "sticker" to correct your video bout sticker corrections....hehe....I see what you did there...that's deep 🎓
Videoception
My figures were ripping each others faces off. What did parents think kids would of emagined when playing with this? "Lets make lemonade"
Would HAVE! Jeeeez... 🤦♂️ And I’m a foreigner..
I have the POTF version of this playset and that caption reads, "You can pretend all Droids are in for a hot time with the branding iron accessory."
Another really fun and (for me anyway), informative video. Love your style Junkman.
Very informative Junkman I had no idea. Please keep up the great work.
Yes, I was fully aware of this sticker and I was able to remove it without tearing the box.
@Alan Cogan Hee hee heee!
Dont worry about the land of the jaws mistake, I call my kids by the wrong name all the time:)
My uncle only speaks in rapid chains of about five names
"Torture the droid". That's what I call it when I... well, never mind....
Throw a handful of tacks on the floor while your Roomba is going by?
I don’t see anyone else making vids like this. Great work Junkman.
thanks, that is always my goal
This was a nice informative video, sometimes it's nice to watch something that doesn't require any thought, plus this spurred on a lot of comments with additional information in it that I wasn't aware of. Thanks
What's funny is that I always assumed that scene was branding or repairing the droid somehow. I never thought of it as a torture scene.
Funny, because the Droid action figure was called a torture droid.
I have always thought it weird that the gonk droid was making the wrong noises.
"That's GOTTA hurt!" Made me laugh out loud. Has no one else noticed this??
You the only one so far :)
Casey Stelken i did
I had the Droid Factory, but did not know this other one existed. The Droid Factory was awesome, for guys that love robots as their favorite characters, and the first time you can make a proper R2D2 with his Center roller skate leg extended as he is in most of the movie when he is moving. That alone was enough to make me beg for this kit, and yes I still have all the pieces lol!
Years later my niece got the Endor play set and I recognized it as being from another line of Kenner toys, either my pretty Pony or Rainbow Brite or something like that. Kenner had a habit of using pre-existing molds and using stickers in different colors to make a toy look all new and different, which I guess is good business sense.
Oh good. After seeing this video my life is now complete. Thanks Junkman.
I have that same shirt That Junkman
Thanks for another great video !
Fascinating video! Thanks JunkMan!
I used to listen to Stealer Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" when I played with this set.
2:27 is the video equivalent of the stickers in question. Very meta of you.
Lol very true
Brilliant observation! I love it!
When I was a kid and would go to my grandparent's, sometimes they would get my uncle's Kenner Star Wars toys out of storage and let me play with them if I promised to be really careful. This toy was in his collection and it was one of the few I had no interest in playing with because it was so boring. Also I'm curious about the display cases behind you at 2:26. Wondering if you could shed some light on what they are, who made them, where I might get them. They look like they might be a good solution to a display problem I'm having!
Great vid mate! Now that's interesting right there, that Kenner was worried of using words like "torture".
It is a Dungeon though.. Surely it wasn't that much of a jump into the PG13 zone.
Thanks for the information. I had no idea there was a sticker on the Jabba the Hutt's dungeon playset. I never owned this growing up and don't recall seeing it in the stores.
I had the manual from the original Droid Factory, sold it on eBay for a mint.
BTW the effect of stage fog shooting out of the droid's feet to simulate steam from the hot iron is the cheapest FX in the entire series.
Cheap, but effective.
I just thought that as watching it, haha.
Years (and years) ago, I witnessed a similar thing when I was working at a lumber yard. One common item they sold were Stanley brand staples for the staple guns/hammer staplers. On these packages were random cover-ups where the "made in..." blurb was. Some packages said "Made in USA", some packages were legit crossed out with a marker and other packages had a black piece of tape covering it. The "Made in USA" blurb itself was also shown with a flag that only had 3 stars and 5 stripes (it half surrounded the text, therefor you could not have all stars and stripes). These packages were the standard Stanley black and yellow, so the text and flag were the same color. Elsewhere on the box you could still find "Made in USA", which made it really odd. Also, these came in at random, sometimes covered and sometimes not.
I was told by someone that it might have been a legal thing because in order for anything made in the US to be branded as such, it has to be spelled out "Made in the U.S.A." because it's the proper, legal abbreviation of the country's name, but I could never find anything to support this claim and I have seen other items that are made in the US just spelled "USA".
That also got me onto my tin-foil hat theory that there is a small providence in China called "Usa" that has a black and yellow flag with only 3 stars and 5 stripes and it was a cover-up to keep people from finding the truth :D
I had a r2-d2 micro machines set where on the box, the brand/company stickers were covered up with stickers of different brands.
I'd love to have this set WITH the box (nice figure photography) - but would prefer the 2nd version that included Amanaman and EV-9D9.
To be fair, that scene looks like the droid's being branded to me.
If im correct, the Droid Factory had the first version of R2 with the middle leg...of course you had to put it together, but i just remember always wanting one with the third leg but all carded versions only had the main two legs.
I told my neighbor about this. He pointed at me and laughed. I guess he already knew.
I TRIED to tell my friends, family and neighbors but instead of being impressed, they were either confused or indifferent.
I never heard of this particular set, but as soon as you said "Land of the Jawas" I was saying "what?" I had the Jawa set (cardboard sandcrawler with a molded plastic base - same as the Hoth play-set.
I had a package without the Boba Fett sticker (showed the firing rocket). I saved up, sent in my proofs of purchase and got my free Boba Fett weeks later. Much to my surprise, it didn't shoot. I thought it was defective.
I remember stickers covering up the new figures on the card back of the late wave ROTJ with #1 as Prune Face. They didn't cover up the names as I recall, just the images.
Können Sie empfehlen Medikamente für Furz und Durchfall?
I had the droid factory as a kid, it was a great playset.
This was one of the few sets I bought with my own money as a kid. I did the math and it seemed a good deal for three figures I needed. I think it was on clearance and was $11.00. I probably noticed the sticker and peeled it off to see what it said. Your video is making me create or recall memories that may or may not be real. The box went out with the trash, I am sure as most of them did back then. The good news is I still have the playset and the figures in great shape. I was 11 or 12 by then and shifting from a "player" to a "collector" and the later toys in the run that I still have reflect that in condtion.
Cool!!! Hope you can get one.
I remember this but only because as a kid I thought 'branding' meant it came with new stickers to put on astromechs.
I had the original Droid factory it had all these little white pegs to connect the parts together. My mom says d she was tired of the parts ending up stuck in the vacuum cleaner and if I wasn't careful she'd toss them. I ended up playing with an empty Droid factory for the rest of my childhood. I'd just connect it to whatever I was using as a rebel base.
On the uk packaging for rotj figures.... the back of the cardboard the figures came on featured pictures of all the figures you could buy, there was like 40 ish, the last 2 were blacked out, i wonder why., anyone know anything about this?
The Ewok were blocked out to hide their look until the release of the film
I wonder about people who give thumbs down to videos. I doubt most of them even actually watch the videos. To me it seems like a form of bullying where someone has to put someone else down to make themselves feel better. You put out great and informative videos about things I grew up with. Please keep up the good work.
Long as they click the video ;)
The hoth playset was awesome ..that poor droid I nearly cried when I was 8 years old watching that at the cinema my dad said there just updating his feet ooo what about the one that got it's limbs pulled off ooo he was faulty from the factory
My brother told me I cried in the theater when Greedo was shot. Im over it now but it still hurts😞.....🤣
in 1977, people in the theater laughed when the jawas shot R2D2.
Did he say anything about the dancer Oola being fed to the Rancor by Jabba?....” don’t worry she’s just being let go of by the manager”. 😁
@@bronzantilium7699 she's merely planning a long trip to the shadow realm!
Kenner loved (even if it was done because of an accident) to put stickers on the box.
Ummm my name is Keith and this was my 5th best Star Wars Playset ever because I only had 5 of them: Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Set > Jabba the Hutt Action Playset > Droid Factory > Some home-made wooden stuff > Jabba the Hutt Dungeon
I had the Droid Factory when I was a kid. It was pretty cool. I remember them releasing it later as Jabba ' s dungeon. It didn't fool me. It was the same playset, minus all the cool Droid parts.
Jamie Braswell it included the 4th R2 action figure but it’s never counted as such by collectors. It’s at least as valid a figure as ESB tear apart 3PO!
If the playset ever gets a reissue these days, the stamp will come in a shape of a peculiar mouse head.
That Junkman
You are lucky, the powers that be in the UK... or idiots as I like to call them, thought the word 'Ninja' was too scary for the much loved Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.
Torture is on a way higher level of not being offensive.
Now that’s stupid :)
It wasn't about being "scary" exactly, it was done under regulations that prevented certain imagery and themes being used in UK children's TV, assassination being one of those themes. Since "real" Ninjas were basically assassins, they fell under that regulation. On the face of it it seems almost comedic now, looking back, but just a few years earlier there was basically no violence in children's TV, directed against humans. It was famously fine to drop an anvil on Wile-E-Coyote, but not on a person. The Turtle cartoon would have been entirely unacceptable under the earlier rules because of its fight scenes, but the newer regs only objected to the characterisation of the protagonists as assassins. When you watch children's TV from before the changes in regulation its of a very different character to that we're now familiar with. Whether you think the change actually improved the overall quality of children's programming is a matter of opinion of course, personally I think it got markedly worse.
yeme
Lol, '...drop an anvil on Wile-E-Coyote...'.
Thanks for the comment. Certainly a bit different now. Still, it should make the 'Hero' Turtles stuff more collectable.
Another one that springs to mind is the Space: 1999 nuclear waste pods having their labels removed because 1 silly woman found one in her back garden and called the bomb squad.
That was the BBC specifically, they thought Ninjitsu was illegal in the UK, they also edited ot any scene where Mikey uses nunchucks.
Killjoys.
Really great video.
I knew about the text under the sticker, but still interesting to look back on.
Junkman, seeing your Hotwheels collection in the background makes me wonder, will you be doing a new unboxing video? I've been watching a lot of videos of RUclipsr unboxing with toys and stuff, and I like that kinda thing. Seeing what fans send in makes me oooh and aaahs at all the great stuff.
Also, cool Mario Bros stuff in the back
Nothing to unbox right now ;)
@@ThatJunkman soon... Random stuff, repaints and cool stuff
Short but sweet.
That intro sound brings back some memories!
I know what you mean
Fun fact though: They did reuse the land of the jawas for the Hoth Rebel Command Center Playset, and the Hoth Ice Planet playset. But DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE DROID DUNGEON PLAYSET. (sorry. had to get a little more ribbing in there.)
Do droid even have feelings? That scene always makes me chuckle now thinking about how ridiculous it is torturing a machine that can't feel pain.
Or worse, they were specifically built so they could feel pain. Now that's dark.
Well 3Po is always scared so I guess they are programmed to feel something. If not why be so scared.
Droids have feelings too.
@@lepterfirefall Yeah, remember how sad R2 was out in the rain, staring in through Yoda's window?
You just placed a "Droid Factory" sticker over your "Land of the Jawas" comment. lol!
Weird how droids in that scene could feel lol!
Didn't C3PO think an oil bath felt good?
I've always wondered if the Starwars droids are sentient.
Well, in your defense, the Land of the Jawas did get reused by Kenner as a Sears exclusive, but it was redone in white as Hoth and included R2 with sensorscope. (Also, Hoth Luke and... ATAT commander?) Speaking of, it was reused before that as Hoth (in white) with ATAT backdrop. I did not buy the Sears exclusive of the renamed Droid Factory with figures because I already had the Droid Factory. Then I sold all my playsets for ... less than 10 bucks total at a garage sale. Droid Factory, Cantina, Sears Hoth. I might have had the probot playset, too.
i never heard of this or the droid factory or cantina playsets when i was younger. That is cool that it comes with Amanaman Barada and EV 9D9. did they come on their boards inside the box or were they just in little baggies?
Baggie
But what if kids wanted to torture droids? The sticker would have led them to believe they couldn't with this playset. 🔥+🤖=😃
NICE !!! To watch a New Review !!!
I happen to have The Land of the Lost Jawas(The Droid Factory) and the Jabba's Dungeon. I got them both when i was a kid and kinda pissed about the Jabba's dungeon.
Hey Junkman,
I remember some of the figures having proof of purchase(the small kenner logo we sent in for stuff)stickers over top of the proof of purchase tag.
Do you remember something like this?
Can’t off top of my head.
It may not have been a wide distribution of these.
Junkman you are DA BOSS!
Cool information.
I have this dude in box too, must check that out
...or they stuffed up. I remember the 90's G I Joe figure for Red Star had a Sticker covering up a "Cobra The Enemy" logo--when the October Guard weren't allied with Dobra at all...
Good one junkman lol!
Interesting stuff
Everyone take a shot of Whisky every time there is an edit.
You’ll be really drunk by 2 mins in
It sounds like Darth Vader is breathing during this. I noticed about halfway in.
Interesting! Thanks.
Hey, my name is Keith.... Oh wait, no it isn't. My bad. Whew, that was a close one. 😁 😜 😂 😂 😂 😂
I do remember the Free boba Fett got ,a few free myself don't remember the toy you described
2:20 i see the mistake on that yellow sticker.... it's supposed to say klaatu VERATA nicto.
They didn't want you to know how to disable Gort... or pick up the Necronomicon perhaps...
I cant remember having that set. I do have the figure that's green lizard looking in off white pajamas. Who is that guy? Anyone know ot would be much appreciated to figure it out. I'm closer to it than I ever have. Let me know.
Is that klaatu?
Yup it is. Thanks to this vid I finally figured it out. Huh. I have the original figure made. Interesting.
LOL - That scene was always funny to me 😃
You are absolutely correct, in order to teach you the difference between Jaws & Jawas I will be happy to take your Star Wars collection
I had the Jawa droid factory
I actually thought it was called land of the jawas
We have this, built R2D2 a lot. I thought it was called droid factory!
A lot of toy companies did the sticker thing. It was a cheaper and easier way to keep production going and the cost of a entirely new package off the books. Even some old race sets did it. They repacked 2 different cars in the set so BAM a sticker with those cars covered up what was but is no more. And YES those stickers were ruthless. Trying to peel it off was next to impossible. Like trying to peel a Kiwi fruit by hand. It would rip the back. Tear the package. Either way unless you had the patience of ???? you weren't seeing what was under there. Cool video, I remember ordering the rocket firing Boba Fett figure. I sent mine in instantly, but alas some kid either ate it or shot it at his face. It took 10 months and I FINALLY got my Boba Fett with his GLUED Jet Pack. Pffft. As a kid I was bummed. Either way ALL my figures were given away and most had the heads bitten off. Sad I know.
I remember that!!!
Weren't they called Death Star Commanders, I dont recall Death Squad
No ever called Death Star commander. Death squad and then change to star destroyer
I never understood the whole droid torture setup. How do you cause pain to a metal robot?
And what’s the point? Can’t they just memory wipe or reprogram them?
It is stupid. In Terminator 2 Arnie explains that although he doesn't feel pain he gets notifications of damage which could be interpreted as pain.
Never knew of any kind of sticker back then but I know we get a lot of unwanted crap stuck on the new stuff like the retro collection, thank God for lighter fluid, thanks for the vid Mr. Junkman!
You slapped a sticker on the video, dude.
I wish they would bring back the original droid factory. It was such a cool toy!
Hey junkman do you have the JABBA SAIL BARGE YET.....its freaking awesome.....i have no idea where im gonna put it......MY WIFE DOES THOUGH.
No. I don’t got that kind of money ;)
Nice job of putting a "sticker" on your "Land of the Jawas" mistake, Junkman.
Enhanced interrogation tactics
I was working on a redesign of the early 2000s Jabba’s Palace Lego set. I noticed in the original set it came with the torture chamber droid, but not the torture chamber itself. So I added it just below the palace entrance.
Good video
You should do a slapped a sticker T-shirt!
Subtitles?
Junkman! Nice video, now for the real question, are you going to do a Force Friday video this week with some new action figure reveals? I think you're cooking something up and not telling us, am I right? Give us a hint. Keep up the great entertainment!
Not really. Going to Nashville for a Hunting for Star Wars on the road. So not sure I’ll do much for force Friday.
Awwwww fuuuuuuuddggge 😢. Have a safe trip to Nashville and good luck finding some cool Star Wars collectibles.
The other relase with the amanaman was better. I would not mind more simple place sets with cool figures
Its like you put a sticker on your video to cover up your mistake! 😉
Dude. LAND OF THE JAWAS ! WHAT?
I remember that picture of bobba !
Bent over with his missile comeing out !
It took 2 or 3 cards /figures to peel the stickers !
I was really disappointed in my Boba Fett figure when it finally arrived in the mail. It looked nothing like the promo picture and it didn't fire a rocket from the backpack.
