I never really thought of getting my hair done as collaborative art, but it is. That's a very insightful way to phrase the process. Before I finally found a stylist who specializes in my texture, getting my hair done was a laborious but necessary chore done with people who came across like they didn't want my hair to be the way it is. I'm so glad it feels good to get a haircut now and I leave the salon smiling.

number 7 feels awkward but it is VERY important. I just recently got my hair colored and it ended up being double what I initially expected 🥴 so when I went back to get my haircut with the same girl, I did mention the price I booked for and to make sure that's what I'll be paying and she said yes and it was indeed what I booked for..So, as uncomfortable and awkward it may feel, PLEASE do talk about pricing so thank YOU JVN for bringing this up 🤩🙌🏼👏🏼

For me, THE BIGGEST, most LIFE CHANGING tip you have shared is having a wet brush when washing hair. Now that I use one, my scalp feels cared for, shampoo and conditioner reach every nook and cranny, and everything rinses so easily. Seriously, I can’t rave enough. I just bought a bunch of JVN hair products and I can’t wait to try them!

My love it took me 3 years to grow out my grey hair, always kept it long, still long down to my back and it’s the very best thing I ever did.
I tone it once every 4/6 months , really every 6 months my stylist it almost three hours away from me.
Highly recommend everything you suggested, plus letting go of dye, ladies be you, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.
My hair is layered softly and I have curly hair, I have the best of both worlds !

I dyed my hair and then started growing it out, thinking I could use 10 vol colour on it to match it up as it grew out, but each time I coloured, I overlapped a tiny bit without realizing. Soon I had dyed over 3" of regrowth. They say 10 vol washes out, but the peroxide lightens the hair. SO now I have three zones of hair.: the bleached, the peroxided, and the natural. It's slow going.

So appreciative of the wisdom you are sharing. You introduced me to Biossance (thank you so much for that!), and I would love, love, love if JVN created flow charts for order of products for different hairstyling needs like Biossance does for skin care routines. So if you want to straighten your hair, blow out your hair, curl your hair, etc, here is the order and the products you use. I am such a novice around how to do my hair and what products (for example was going to try blowing out my hair and assumed air dry cream would help with 'holding' the blow out but then was listening to you here and understood that is not what it is for. This might be so obvious to some but having a visual flowchart for which of your products to grab in what order for different styles would be SUPER helpful for me. Thanks for all you do!

I’m also just going to plug here… JVN products changed my hair life. I always thought my hair was just BORING. It’s straight and doesn’t like to do much without hours of work. I started using some JVN products like the scalp oil, air dry cream and volumizing shampoo. My hair is so.. PRETTY. It’s silky and shiny. I don’t even CARE that it’s stock straight anymore. Go. I definitely am guilty of the wet slickback and will remand my ways. I'm also a healthcare worker wearing n95s daily and I'm noticing a lot of breakage near my temples/widows peaks. Other than wearing a cloth band to protect my hair, is there anything I can do to prevent breakage? Also how do I style down these flyaway cause I have very long blue hair and it looks a bit disheveled when my braids are perfect. I have your whole hair care line, currently using your scalp oil and repair s/c combo. I love your instant recovery serum and air dry cream, it's all been helping a ton. The length is hydrated and I have gorgeous beach waves after I let my braids out, but I'm struggling with flyaways when I need my hair up and put of my face when I secure for my work in the lab 🔬 omg love you and thank you for all the tips!! ❤️💜💚

I cut off about 6 inches every year with the occasional 1-2 inch trim to keep the ends healthy, and I grew it from bra-strap length to classic (top of thigh) in 4 years. I've actually taken it back up to waist because the weight was too much.
Anyway. So I've got great hair, but I don't know what to do with it. I've never met a stylist who could do anything with it. It's stubborn. Takes many many hours to dry no matter how short. Will not bend to a heat tool and product. Yet is wavy as hell when wet. Very very thick with a mix of thin strands & medium sized strands.
Advice? I want hair with a little volume even if it doesn't keep the waves. Usually I just bun it, since I figured out how to do that with a hairstick a few years ago. It has to be long enough to do that, though - waist is the shortest it can be.

First of all I love all your youtube videos! Especially the school of life and, of course, the curly hair tips. Second but most important,, though I know that maybe this isn't the right platform to complement this part of your work, but ADORE, actually I'm FASCINATED with your getting curious podcast. I've learnt so much, and got so many book recommendations from the episodes (I'm listening to the When Viruses Spread... just now). I have to say this, for a queer, non-binary person from Portugal, which is also a science nerd, you are awesome and you make me feel less lonely. Seriously love JVN scalp oil! I took some of your previous advice about double cleansing when shampooing (I do a clarifying shampoo, then currently JVN Embody shampoo) and I am seeing my hair and scalp flourishing over time! My hair (ends, really) always looks best on day 2/3 post wash; I’m using the air dry cream to try to create the wavy texture that my hair chills out into, right on wash day with ok results, my hair just likes to be a little dirty, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jonathan, can you PLEASE do like a hair styling and product class on Camp Pendleton for female service members? When I was active duty I had so much breakage due to trying to abide by orders pertaining to how our hair should look in uniform. Seriously, like we go in with somewhat healthy hair and then some of us come out with bad receding hairlines or thinning hair. It would be a really great education in the field and when not in the field.

I was referred to this video through a fan of your video. Its funny because I wanted to give the fan a hair tip and found the person is actually trying to look good despite the frizzy, frazzled hair. If the person would just try a hair straightener tool, they would look really good.

Yas yas yas to scalp care! A few years ago I began to have eczema flare-ups on my scalp and I went on a deep dive journey to give my scalp some much needed TLC. I still to this day maintain a lot of those practices.

Since a couple of years I also have eczema on my scalp and am really searching for how to give as much love as possible to my scalp. But it’s really hard, as nothing seems to truly work. Spoke to my hair dresser, spoke to the doctor, but no real results. So I would love to know your secret and what you found on your deep dive! And dying to try the scalp oil of jvn, but they do not ship to my country :(

@@femke7745 eczema is tough since it can be autoimmune triggered so even finding what tends to be your trigger can be a big help. I realized mine was stress related, and when I would be in spiraling stress mode I would pick and scratch even more (which made things worse), so I would have to consciously make an effort not to touch. I also found rosemary and mint oils to be a huge help in hair products. Hask has a rosemary scalp mask I adore and Beauty Without Cruelty also has a rich rosemary mint conditioner (I would slather my scalp in it that as a mask and put normal conditioner at my ends). I've been using Derma E's scalp/psoriasis shampoo and conditioner. Neutrogena also has their T-Sal shampoo which I use when things got very bad (I would essentially use that in conjunction with the Derma E shampoo), the salicylic acid in it is really good to slough off the rough patches and flakes so I was less likely to pick at them. I believe Walgreens makes a generic version too, so that can help save a few bucks. Klorane had a peony scalp spray that I would use when I would get itchy as it was soothing, but it's a small bottle and sometimes I would run through it fast. I would do a scalp scrub maybe every third wash, I've used ones from Pacifica, Christophe Robin, and Ouai. The Pacifica one has rosemary and mint oils and is the most cost-effective. That one and rhe CR one are sea salt based so they're a bit more coarse, the Ouai one is much finer so it may be more gentle, but no matter what, don't use rough pressure or force when working it into the hair/along the scalp. You don't want it to scratch up your scalp or damage the eczema portions.
I hope some of this helps, best of luck and I hope you find a process and products that can help make your eczema more manageable!

my sister is a hair stylist and I spent a lot of time being her hair school dummy. So when she finished school and I was going off to school, far from home. We both began worrying about my roots because I was blond. Instead of just letting it grow out and show roots. She didn't permanent dye my whole head again but she added a colour close to my natural brunette, so that as it grew out, it would look more ombre and not show roots. It worked well because I couldn't get a haircut until I got home. I haven't actually coloured my hair since. Then when I moved again and had to find another hair stylist. She had asked me if I had natural hair or if I coloured it. She guessed it was natural because of how soft it was to her. My first appointment with her was just sheer luck. She was the owner and master stylist in the salon who just happened to have a cancellation that day. The reception girls said that rarely happens to her schedule but it was all they had when I called if there was an opening. She did a consult/hair cut in the same day. Since I really didn't need much but we both determined a look that would appeal to my job. I let her know when I had coloured it prior and she goes "oh its been a few years, that colour is long gone now". When she had students at her salon, I guess I was a good example for her to use. Since she would tell these students in front of me. How I came to the salon and what I was looking for and "this is what natural hair feels like". She would explain how a consult worked and what I came in initially looking for and why I wanted and needed a simple cut. She was telling them that not all clients will be over the top in what they want. That you need to know what they do for a job and why they need to look a certain way. It was a neat experience for me as her client too.
