It's truly amazing how a voice alone can trigger such emotions. I was in the middle of France in the middle of nowhere and overheard a couple speaking and I got a lump in my throat. Not only did I hear a warm beautiful East End voice but after having a little chat I found out that they originally lived just a street away from my father decades ago in Shipman street/ road . They thought their accent was common and was embarrassed by it but I thought it was truly beautiful. I had giant tears rolling down my cheeks as I walked away. I was brought up in Bow but could even tell the accent apart. My heart truly aches for what we had and breaks for what was robbed from us. I've travelled the world and never found a race of people like it. Bless any originals out there❤
it saddens my soul to see what they have done to canning town. a whole community of large familys where you knew so many people. streets where you knew 60\70% of the people personally and everyone looked out for each other. it was very much a community of them and us, no one grassed up thier neghbour for anything and if there was a problem you sorted it out amongst yourselves. as kids we played on the street till dark and made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Now they dont even know the person living next door and they have ripped apart a whole community. I now live in hornchurch and moved in 2015, the last of a very very large family to leave the town. My heart will always belong to canning town but the canning town of old which unfortunately no longer exists because of the powers that be. RIP a large part of the east end that was canning town.
The old lady is absolutely spot on when she said there are too many people in the country. NB. Just realised the fella in the film is Jimmy Flint who I remember as a decent boxer from the 70s who fought for the British title. Nice one!
I remember seeing Jimmy Flint, training in the peacock gym, back in the day. I left London over 20 years ago, I don't regret it, it was better for my family, but it's sad to see the replacement of a whole community.
I used to love going round the market as a kid by myself love the place my dear late nan lived on the 1 floor of the flats that over looked the market, great memories ❤️
I grew up in Canning Town from 1980 to 1993. The notion of community spirit is a myth. From 1980 to 85 there were big issues with racist attacks. Let's be honest back in the day it was damp. My old school Trinity Boy School, needed to have police patrolling our school for about 3 months. Like with most things in life, there are positive and negative changes.
Really interesting to watch, I grew up and lived in Canning Town until I was 11 - I moved to Essex in 1987 where I still live. So many great memories, particularly of my school Star Lane, the market and Merkoffs ice cream! I drive through on the way home from West Ham games and it’s mad how much the place has changed.
All we have are our memories. I have some great memories of the area some pukka summers that I'll never forget. So sad about the market. It was a banging market with plenty of stalls.
In 1971 aged 16, I started work at London Transport Poplar garage, as an engineering garage trainee. I do remember the Rathbone Street market, and the Royal Oak on the corner of Oak Road. Many blokes I worked with, lived near or in Canning Town and Poplar, and these people were very good to a youngster like me. These men worked hard and enjoyed a smoke and a drink. I well remember the concerns over the regeneration of the docks and the local area. They could see the 'flashy' developments springing up. It certainly worried them all. Could they afford to live there with their families? As for the old Rathbone street market. Many local politicians; certainly in my area have directorships and interests in construction companies. Many local council's are anti business. They certainly don't want to help the market traders, that type of commerce was yesterday. Today in the 21st century it's all about the money and profit, ordinary people don't matter. A bloody shame. Great documentary thanks.
It feels like they're sanitising and bleaching all the authenticity and the original feel of the area and replacing it with modern synthetic rubbish (gentrification) bring back the market the heart of the community
I'm originally from canning Town and I hate the changes going on but for me the worst is the noise factor, the community where conned by its politicians developers and completely sold out so you can wax as lyrical and romanticise all you like, but you have to be totally stupid if your not touched by the statement you can't see the sun
I am Born and Bred here in Canning Town and still here now in my late 60s. The Council has Fucked the area just building Flat after Flat after Flat and importing more and more people. I know just 3 people who I knew as a child everyone else is from elsewhere nice for them but depressing for locals. When I was a child when Rathbone Market was a real Market before being Destroyed by this Labour Council was a Real Market and on a Friday and Saturday was full of stalls and used to go from where he was all the way back right to the old headquarters of Thomas Crib Funeral Directors. Look at it now and it’s Pathetic really Pathetic sadly 😢 Great video just a shame you can only film how downhill it has become. Barking road Fast Foot shop followed by Fast Food Shop, Sad.
Canning Town was a very scary, ugly and rough place when I was last there around 2005-08. It is much better now, and any protestation about the past is emotional nostalgia. Still lots of poverty and litter, but due to its location I am sure it will be cleansed and gentrified in the next 10 year. That's not a bad thing IMO - look to the future.
