- Continuing our exploration of Leith Hill and the Greensand Way. Matthew Holdsworth and I are climbing up the spiral staircase of Leith Hill Tower. We find a potted history of the remarkable edifice displayed in one the rooms and a breathtaking view from the top. If you look closes your can even see the Shard among the collection of skyscrapers in London.

My mother and father took us to visit here in the late 50's early 60's. Lovely drive from Morden in those days! Enjoyed a glass of 'ginger beer' sold from a small hut at the side of the tower! Brilliant memories!
Sounds great!
Breath taking! A very enjoyable video. I must visit one day.
You should, you will love it. Only £2 to climb to the top.
Thank you Richard and Matthew, lovely views from the top
Glad you enjoyed it Ann. Take care.
Great views from the top that tower is lovely
Thanks George. Well worth a jaunt some day.
Fascinating. Great video
Very kind.
Took me back to the 50's and 60's when I used to visit, didn't mind the height back then but found myself leaning backwards watching you both near the edge. Great memories though!
It's an icon these days, so lovely to return. Thanks for watching Pam.
Lovely. Years since I went up Leith Hill and the tower. Thank you.
I hadn't been up there since I was a young teenager. Thanks for watching.
Another top vid worthy of a job on tv. Thank you for the hard work Richard.
You are too kind.
Hope you enjoyed the tower - another great video! I’m very impressed that the mic picks up so little of the wind noise.
They are good mics, and at £300 they ought to be! :)
great video
Thank you for this wonderful video of Leith Hill - I've never visited it before although I spent much of my youth camping and fishing at nearby Box Hill (yes I've also watched your videos shot there) I must visit Leith Hill in the new year - really enjoying uour channel.
Thanks so much, Mick. I hope to get out more in the Surrey Hills next year!
Been there, done that, nearly got blown off the top!
If I remember correctly the original tower was just the round part with the square part added later.
ReverendFlatus - I think it was the other way around
@@MrGreatplum - you are probably right. I also seem to remember something about the tower being built to take the height of Leith Hill to over 1000 feet. I've possibly got that wrong too!
ReverendFlatus - no, that’s right I think :)
Did you get the t-shirt?
@@RichardVobes - No, I feel cheated!
On Limpsfield Chart there is a sign which says Greensand Way, 55 miles to Haslemere, 55 miles to Hamstreet.
I must look out for that
A great double act! But did you get your well earned cup of tea?
Matt Osborne - we both had a very nice hot chocolate from the kiosk! :)
Oh we did. Very yummy it was too!
One word. Wow. Well ok thats three words, and now its twelve words. Oh wait now its seventeen, no nineteen? Will this ever stop!!
Thanks for the Wow! :) (And all the other words)
Is that a microwave data link (two small-dish antennas) on the pole on the top of the staircase tower?
The tower used to operate a VHF radio repeater for Surrey County Council multi agency communications channel. That is what the antennas are for..
How were your legs after climbing those stairs? ;)
Sid Bonkers - achy but it’s not as bad as climbing the scarp slope up there!
I am getting rather used to spiral staircases now! :)
