    When I saw Ted Levine on "Monk", I was shocked by the irony of the fact that the man who played Buffalo Bill was playing a police chief! The poor guy deserved a break after what he went through after "The Silence of The Lambs"

    I'm guilty of the opposite ...I dislike Braveheart because of my strong personal dislike of Mel Gibson. I admit it's ridiculous. I'm working on it.
    But writing hate letters to Ted Levine for his convincing portrayal of a psychopath in a movie is a whole nuther level of cluelessness... like back in the day when the actor Robert Young played the kindly Doctor Marcus Welby on TV, and housebound widows wrote letters to the much loved actor for medical advice.

    • @RelieaYuell
      @RelieaYuell 9 лет назад +4

      +ziffulmyer Your dislike of Mel Gibson effecting your views of his movies isn't ridiculous. I began a personal boycott of his movies due to him being a terrible person and not wanting to support or pay for the work of a terrible person. I used to enjoy Braveheart, but the last time I saw it I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy it so I figured it was better not to bother with his work entirely.

    • @buca117
      @buca117 9 лет назад +2

      +Reliea Yuell I really don't understand why people get upset and boycott actors. They're almost all shitbags of some degree in some arena. We have people like Gweneth Paltrow doing things like taking on the Food Stamp Challenge and letting a boyfriend by dinner on the side (that's the epitome of vapid) and on the other end we've got people like Mel being racist assholes.
      They're both pretty shitty hypocrites of their respective ideologies. Way too fucking many of them are. They do all this stuff for charity but for a lot of them it's all just vanity fuel.
      So I just don't care. I watch a movie and enjoy it, because 9 films out of 10 are going to have somebody that's a shitbag cast in them. Because it's Hollywood, of course they fucking will.

    • @RelieaYuell
      @RelieaYuell 9 лет назад +4

      buca117
      Eh, it's not like I'm asking anyone else to, or judging other people for not boycotting them, but if I know they're not good people, I'll avoid their work. Being vapid doesn't make you a bad person, but at least in my opinion, being racist does. There aren't many celebs that get exposed as horrible people, so it's a very small circle to avoid, and although there probably are a lot more, most of them we'll probably never know about. I'll take an airhead over a racist any day XD

    As I understand it the reason Brandon Lee was killed was because the prop gun, which was a real revolver, had the prop bullets replaced with blanks but one bullet head stuck inside the cylinder. Prop bullets have no gunpowder and often are not crimped. Crimping is where the brass case is slightly impressed or 'crimped' to the actual bullet/projectile to firmly hold them together. When the gun was emptied of prop ammo, one of the bullet heads (the actual lead projectile) stuck in the cylinder. No one noticed that one of the prop shell casings had no bullet on it. When the blanks (which have a powder charge but no bullet) were put in, you now had both a powder charge and a projectile. When the Massee started shooting the prop gun at Lee, eventually the gun cycled to the now loaded chamber. Very sad.

      In his defence, I have seen worse child actors than Lloyd, and I didn't find his character all that annoying - after all, Luke was pretty much the same at the beginning of A New Hope; the only difference was that Luke had at least some narrative agency, Young Anakin didn't.

    It was a long time ago, but Charles Laughton was so convincing ss a cruel , heartless Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty that peopke who saw him on the street would curse and spit at him. He had a hard time getting other roles for some time, but I don't know exactly how long that lasted .

  • @andreabergstrom983
    @andreabergstrom983 5 лет назад

    You missed one of the first cases of this. Charles Laughton who played the cruel Caotain Bligh in "Mutiny on the Bounty." Laughton's acting was so well done that he "became" Captain Bligh. Film goers hated the character of the the HMS Bounty's captain so much that people would curse at him and spit in on him if they met him somewhere in real life.

      IronRooRoo The thing is, he didn't just do it for a few years. He was a child actor, even played in The Dark Knight LOL.
      and you and i both know if the common man made 5 million bucks in a couple of years, short of health or drastic changes, they ain't quitting that gig hell no.

      Also, the guy was quoted as saying he hated the Hollywood culture and that's the reason he left, not because of fans being unable to see him as anything else.

    Simon, I realize you made this a long time ago, so I doubt you will see this comment. The 13th Warrior was based on a book previously named Eaters of the Dead, by Michael Crichton. Crichton was inspired by numerous telling of Beowulf that he had heard growing up. And that is the story he wanted to write (our hero's name is also Beowulf), but not just as a narrator, but as a scientific person outside of this new culture and being introduced to this culture at the worst possible time. Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan is all of us. It was not a box office success for the same reason high school kids everywhere groan when they are handed a copy of Beowulf. It will never be Earth shattering film making. But it does let you look at Beowulf with new eyes and we need that so badly right now.

    After spending several years doing theatre productions, I can honestly say that I have no trouble separating an actor from a character that they play. It stuns me that there are so many stupid people that can't separate the actor from the role.

    Little House on the prairie.
    The guy who played the baddie in the last episode had to be "pardoned" by Charles Ingalls on film! Otherwise his real life career was in jeapardy.Also: Katherine MacGregor, who played the role of Mrs. Olson MUST have suffered in some way, outside of her role...
    -just a suggested path to create a part 2 for this video.You're doing a great job, keep it up! :)
