In the early spring, when tree pollen is floating on the water, try the shad rap like a top water plug, just flip it out and gently twitch it a few times, reel it in a little, let it sit and twitch it again with the same pattern. It's kind of like a hula popper without the aggressive plunge. Next time you see tree pollen floating on the water give it a try, you'll be amazed.
The Shad rap is a staple for me in the clear water grass lakes in Texas during the colder months. Really a overlooked pattern around deep docks as well. Great video Randy!
It’s just a producer. Itll be my go to on Cumberland all winter. Not only a bass lure. I’ve caught walleye, catfish, crappie, hybrid and white bass on it. The small shallow runner in a bluegill pattern is straight dynamite in the summer months.
The Shad Rap is a great crankbait and it works for other fish too! Great color choices and the firetiger is another good choice too. Great video Randy!
Randy love your video s the shadrap has been a favorite for me for 40 years I have followed you for all time keep up with your videos even a experienced man like me needs a refresh from time to time
Sorry Randy, you forgot the firetiger one! When there are clouds it's by far my favorite one here in Brazil. I've been fishing with them for about 30 years now. Excelent lure!
Awesome as always Randy thanks for the great video we all respect you and love the videos you do I think your one of the best fishing teachers on u tube . Thanks again and God bless you and your family.
Absolute gold, Randy! Thank you very much! I've mentioned it before, I've never even had the pleasure of seeing an American bass in real life, but I'm sure this knowledge will carry over to the predators we have, here. I have some shad raps in my box, but truth be told I haven't fished them in years. Thank you for reminding me!
That was some great juice Randy. I have a size 5 tied on everytime I go out. One of my best days was in the middle of summer, 90+ air temp 80+ water temp Making long casts. It took me awhile to figure out the right spinning setup and line choice because of the light weight of the size 5, it's a great lure....Thanks for the tips!!!
Great video, one of my favorite crankbaits. Walleye love them too. Great mention of how bass go back to it during the dog days of summer. Flicker shads are good too. But not the same. They cast better, have a rattle, and cost less. However they are built poorly. And the hooks aren't great either either.
I've been fish'in Shad Raps since the 1980's and the only three colors I own and use are the three that you mentioned....great minds think alike! hahaha. It's one of my main go-tos when things are tough or I'm getting followers instead of biters. I also have the same color Shad Raps in the shallow bill version. I wish you would have said something about those too, be it good or bad. I very seldom use them because I've never really developed a confidence in them like I have in the long bill version. I picked up some good things about these that I didn't know about before, thanks. PS When I lived out West, I also had them in rainbow trout color.
dont forgert the bronze fat rap. I fished a bunch of tournaments on tidle rivers in eastern north carolina over the years, and the bronze fat rap got us a check more than once.
Has anyone attempted to drill the new Shad rap elites at the throat to insert tungsten nail weights for suspending? Does the redesigned internal hardware get in the way of a drill bit positioned at the centerline between the lure lip and the front hook hanger?
Never use Shad Raps. The new age is here. There are far advanced lures for fishing these days. Fishing has cometh a long way, but unfortunately, the people haven't caught up.
Big big mistake there is no crankbait on this planet that is going to out fish a shad rap especially in the colder months period. If you catch a thousand bass on your lure you'll catch two thousand on a shad rap.

They're good for big crappie too.
I've had days on lake st clair where I caught 40 smallmouth in one day on a shad rap. Caught a lot of walleye on them too.
I have several Shad RPs that i keep in the boat. I really wish Rapala would go back to making the FatRap with balsa and bring back the shallow FatRap
Absolutely right Randy ,,they came out in 82 same year I got caught by my wife !! # 7 my Fav
The Shad rap is a staple for me in the clear water grass lakes in Texas during the colder months. Really a overlooked pattern around deep docks as well. Great video Randy!
Right on Randy. Great winter bait. Thanks for sharing.
Love the Shadrap especially the shallow runner. Caught my PB in Ohio on a #9 SSR! 3:04
i’m glad to see that you throw your crankbaits in a slot in the box i always wondered if i should store mine a different way
My PB smallmouth was on Cherokee Lake TN with a shad-rap....5lb in the mid-1990s.

They worked great bank fishing the canals in the everglades around homestead Florida.
The Shad Rap is a great crankbait and it works for other fish too! Great color choices and the firetiger is another good choice too. Great video Randy!
My dad gave me a Rapala Minnow a 2 inch one black back gold sides and that was my first lure and I still have it today
Spot on with your information
Absolutely spot on video.
Fat rap #5 is the best for me especially the old craw dad pattern
Hi Randy, thanks for the information and education !
Thanks for information, have some , not use in a while
Been catching fish with them for years. Excellent crank bait.
Randy love your video s the shadrap has been a favorite for me for 40 years I have followed you for all time keep up with your videos even a experienced man like me needs a refresh from time to time
I love the shad rap!! One of my favorite lures of all time, i catch huge trout on them too
Sorry Randy, you forgot the firetiger one! When there are clouds it's by far my favorite one here in Brazil. I've been fishing with them for about 30 years now. Excelent lure!

I hear the reflect really well on livescope too!😂
Always 1, Always! SMH
Greatest cold water crankbaits bar none. And in my opinion Greatest overall crankbait of all time. That gold in February prespawn is dangerous.
Great video! I use the Shad Rap extensively, and I have followed your advice, swapping out the old hooks with the finesse trebles.

Proven fish catcher right there. Smallmouth crush that bait in the craw pattern around rock. iMO a larger class of fish than the Ned.
My favorite bass lure.
I've never used it but will definitely put that in my tackle box this season
Hey Randy! Love the videos and quick question...does this information on the shad rap also include the shallow shad rap?
Thanks for the video. Do you upsize the hooks from stock? Those looked a little different. Thanks again for another great video.
One of the first tournaments I ever won was with a Shad Rap
My largest Grand Lake fish 7# caught on a shad rap in March !!!

Use em in Great Lakes and connected waters for smallies and walleyes. Even thru ice👍
Bluegill pattern In central ky
Мои любимые! Особенно огненный тигр! По судаку- класс!
👍 thanks
My most productive crank bait for many decades.
Randy, what do you think about the jointed Shad Raps?
dont forgert the bronze fat rap. I fished a bunch of tournaments on tidle rivers in eastern north carolina over the years, and the bronze fat rap got us a check more than once.
Hey Randy what's some good advice for someone fishing with no electronics what do I look for
A shad rap number 5 smashes smallmouth in my local river all times of the year .
How do they compare to the flat side crankbaits like the Frittside?
Randy, do you throw them on a spinning reel? Line size? I haven’t used them in years. I will purchase some today.
Randy use a Spinning outfit with 8 pound line.
Thanks, i was multitasking and missed that part@@carlhertel7581
In your opinion which one pattern is best in all circumstances
Think he said the silver/ black back he’s caught most on
I still have an original one in my tackle box
Randy, the new Shad rap elites are lead-free!!!
Have you had much luck on the Glass Rap ?
Has anyone attempted to drill the new Shad rap elites at the throat to insert tungsten nail weights for suspending? Does the redesigned internal hardware get in the way of a drill bit positioned at the centerline between the lure lip and the front hook hanger?
Never use Shad Raps. The new age is here. There are far advanced lures for fishing these days. Fishing has cometh a long way, but unfortunately, the people haven't caught up.
The old stuff still out fish's any of the new stuff.
