It makes no sense to me how people would be walking around the city, since the radiation would spread about the city, but it could be possible that the wind blew the radiation in the other direction, but I'm not an expert in this part of science.

I loved the blast in this movie. Perhaps the makers of "The Sum of All Fears" could have done a better job by showing the blast, instead of the hospital's windows being blown out, and the presidential motorcade being blown off of the road. They should have shown the stadium being vaporized.

Yeah your right, they said in part 5 or 6 that they were CHEAP, SIMPLE nukes from the Soviet Union. Even if the bomb was still able to detonate, some of the material would have been halved-life and been much less deadlier. But then were talking about a movie with "special effects". The only bomb that could do that would be a Tsar Bomba.

This scenario would not happen. A nuclear explosion cannot be caused by an explosion nearby because it wouldn't be powerful enough initiate a chain reaction. The chain reaction has to occur inside the device's core.

@Zappina /actually its not the material, its about the design of the weapon itself, and what kind of explosives youre using for the trigger. RDX, Composition 4, are what you use for the detonation of the deuterium, the deuterium fires the uranium projectile and sends it crashing into another uranium plate at the end of tube setting off the secondary explosion, you can even do that with a fission trigger too.

Acually depending on distance, the flash, that moves at the speed of light would be well ahead of the blast that moves at the speed of sound. Since they were for enough thta the flash did not kill them, the few second it took for them to take cover is not out of the question. Theoretically.

well the amount of people that are likely to be killed by a nuclear blast is estimated by the kiloton and megaton. 1 kt can kill 10,000 people, 10 kts can kill 80,000-100,000, 1 megaton can kill as many as 1,000,000 people just with the blast and heat alone or they will die due to the amount of radiation from the fallout

  • @derekwall82

@Godzillaman/Its about the volitility of the explosive triggers, and how unprotected they are from whatever could cause ignition and detonation. Or since it was chemicals that set that off the explosion it couldve been a chemical reaction. it could be anything really, like they said in the movie "they were built fast and they were built cheap". Since the detonation of "fat man", nuclear weapons were built better and safer. designs that are built with volitle high explosives, wiring thats not static resistant, or any other design flaws are the ones that are the most unstable. 1) Uncopple the runaway's locomotives from the rest of the train so that the bomb car would coast to a stop.
    2) Use a chopper to get the crew and the bomb off the train and call an air strike on it.
    3) Use the handbrakes on the train's freight cars(they still had emergancy and dynamic brakes too!).
    4) Extinguish the fires at the crash site with fire trucks instead of choppers(the choppers missed the flames). Stupid

Flaw 1 - it would roll down, break pipes damaged and the cargo is too heavy
Flaw 2 - It would be very difficult to get on the chopper and not enough room, airstrike would make it derail causing the nuke to explode
Flaw 3 - Same thing ( cargo too heavy, not enough time and broken brake pipes )
Flaw 4 - Sodium metal would explode and they would be stuck in traffic.

2 it would destroy the envoirment faster and too risky
3 even with all the brakes the train is too heavy and theyre on a downhill slope just like the cajon pass derailment
4 firetrucks mostly use water and not a special chemical that does not react with the sodium
