This is so beautiful. I can't describe in words how beautiful this is.
The crazy thing is that amazing melody is played by a guitar. This is one of my favorite instrumentals of any song ever, and the section you highlighted is the whole reason. The second verse sounds great too but the first verse is the best part.

That's also probably why it's very heavy. If they mentioned love, it would be about losing someone, dealing with grief, etc. Not necessarily romantically.

That's not Joe, that's actually the Dust Brothers who made the soundtrack to Fight Club. It's the same LFO synth that plays during the chorus / throughout the song
