@@NosEL34 I used to think they were just a good tube with a lovely treble, then we used them in one of our headphone amp prototypes as the input gain stage and they just blew me away with a nice warm full midrange and a treble that was the best we've ever heard. Even though everyone knows tubes are partly dependent on the circuit they're running, it's always worth repeating. Another common problem we see all the time is poorly designed circuits that don't even give the tubes a chance to show what they're capable of - this is a common problem even in expensive amps.
@@tubelab194 very true & well said. I guess I should say that I haven't listened to the clear tops in a circuit that brought out their full potential. They are definitely a very popular tube.
@@joemartin6439 with few exceptions Raytheon made our least favorite tubes. I know it doesn't make sense, a military manufacturer, with huge resources behind them, should have made great sounding tubes ... but they didn't. Now when they partnered up with Hitatchi to form HitRay the quality went up, not surprising given all the HitRay tubes were made by Hitatchi in Japan.

I've always felt RCA tubes in general have been a safe bet. I'm not a huge fan of the 12au7 clear tops but i would still choose them over many others.
