  • Covering the ins and outs of framing a tiny house on wheels. This is a very similar process to traditional home framing, with a few exceptions. In this video, I’ll explain what it takes to frame a tiny home on wheels in accordance with NOAH standards and certification. If you have any questions about this process, don’t hesitate to leave us a comment!

    Use larger Square washers on your hold downs. The square washer have a slot so that even if your anchor bolts are not centered well they will still work. Also they make a nail gun for Simpson ties. It will save several hours on your build.

    As someone not new to framing but new to framing on a trailer I appreciated that you skipped over basic framing instruction to talk about trailer application. I had never heard of NOAH and just looked them up. My first impression after skimming their intro and requirements is that the "certification" is dumb, nothing but some people trying to make money by forcing their way into every transaction involving tiny homes. Your 24OC to 12OC mistake due to 7/16 sheathing and use of OSB seem like an obvious example to me of why NOAH certification is dumb. They appear to require OSB as sheathing when OSB is inferior to plywood, especially on a trailer where you need every bit of lightness and sheer strength--I don't care what the manufacturers of OSB say, it's basically more like particle board than continuous fiber wood and under the kind of severe stresses that a heavy trailer bouncing around would cause, I don't believe it would be as strong as plywood, either for shear or for holding onto nails and screws. NOAH acts like its can dictate safety like that but it's BS, not building science if one size fits all. There should have been a different solution available to you than almost doubling your framing for 1/8" thickness shear loss from OSB, a little extra bracing on the inside or whatever. OSB is heavy AF and disintegrates in standing water. And you'd think that people into tiny homes are into green living, and while it is true that OSB makes efficient use of timber stock to reduce total harvest to meet market demand, it is also a big slab of formaldehyde and possibly toxic. Given the massive amount that goes into building these, spending a few hundred extra on plywood over OSB seems a no brainer, and so does 24OC for such small structures where maximum R value is key.

    Hi just saw your video, we are learning on our first tiny home build. Did you use nails only for roof framing.

    You mentioned 4 foot stud spacing a couple of times where it looked like where you were talking about it they were maybe 2 foot ??

    • @BTRtinyhomes
      @BTRtinyhomes  4 месяца назад +1

      I was probably referencing the threaded studs that bolt the bottom plate to the trailer. The wall studs are 16" OC, and the rafters are on 24" OC.

    Palm nailer... palm nailer is your friend when you have to do a ton of hurricane ties like that. Or an actual strap shot hanger gun, but that's such a specific tool it's easier to just have a small palm nailer in your tool kit 👍

    What is the nailing/stapling pattern for sheathing and house wrap?

    • @BTRtinyhomes
      @BTRtinyhomes  4 месяца назад +1

      For the wall sheathing, its 4" on perimeter and 8" in the field. For roof sheathing, it's 3" on perimeter and 6" in field. House wrap pattern was roughly 16" spacing everywhere, but this isn't super critical as long as it's held down flat.

      @BTRtinyhomes Thank you boss man. I'm building a 16ft one. What Noah Certification plan did you go with?

  • @MrAbbielover

    would be interested in how you and your dad raised the walls. Did you make shorter sections to make it easier to lift onto the trailer and secure it? If so, you must of used a bit more lumber to tie each section together. Reason I ask is that I'm hoping to build a tiny on my own.

    • @BTRtinyhomes
      @BTRtinyhomes  Год назад +1

      We just muscled them up. Basically set the bottom plate up on the trailer with some sort of stop to keep it from sliding. Then we just picked up from the top, and walked them up. I’m sure there are some better methods, but it worked for us!

    Is that 2x4 studs in wall and is 2x6 used in studs like they are in normal house construction ?

    • @BTRtinyhomes
      @BTRtinyhomes  11 месяцев назад

      We used 2x4’s in the ceiling as well to maximize the height inside.
