    I decided to look things like this up when I came across the Mercury living Presence recordings of the 50s & 60s where in the days of Mono they recorded whole orchestras with one mic and in stereo they used three and they sound great. Got me thinking about how we often feel sad when we don't have like 14+ mics to record a kit due to money etc. I think sometimes wee gotta appreciate how they did things back then and got great results.

    I have become very motivated to capture a good drum sound with only 4 or 5 mic's, and, in the process, I discovered your channel, which is excellent. One thing I would rather not do is mic the toms, or, at least, not the rack tom(s). I can say that, if I had this room, I would probably be very close with just this one mic. I would think microphone choice would also help equalize the sound, for example, a ribbon would capture more depth at the same height. Also, perhaps two mics in the same location, but of different type, e.g., one large-diaphragm condenser and one ribbon. Great stuff. Cheers.

    The first set up is also bad because your microphone is almost pointed directly at the edge of the crashes, which causes a swooshing, phasing when the cymbals move up and down (cut in and out of the peak image point of your mic)
    You can hear the effect clearly at 1:39, and it can cause problems in a mix.

  • @therugburnz
    @therugburnz 7 лет назад +2

    this is what I was told when I was in school . It was more about leaning your mics worked than any thing else at the time but, one could combine this with a Bidirectional mic for mid plus mid minus using a three (or cqommit to two)tracks for drums setup. Keep in mind that we still had to strongly CONSIDER that it could be on vinyl or broadcast in mono[ AM broadcasting that is floating on the 120 house current was a very real thing] so it had to be MONO-COMPATABLE to keep the cutting needle from jumping out of the groove or broadcasting only bad reverb.
    Thanx for teaching a bout One Mic in drums. Next just 4 fun record a Jazz trio { trap set, stand up bass, horn} with on mic. Adding middle side would prove much to the youngins.
    p.s. oldys too, PEACEV tf OUT

  • @thane_snipes

    Awesome video! One point I would like to add is that when you're recording drums with a single microphone, the skill of the drummer is gonna be a deciding factor in how you place the mic. A good drummer can balance the sound of the kit in the room, allowing you to capture a fuller sound without close mics. And for the record, the drummer in this video did quite a good job, taking it fairly easy on the cymbals for the most part.

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Chuck! It's all about what YOU want to hear. Sometimes it's a happy medium and sometimes you'll move the mic to emphasize a particular part of the kit. It all depends on your music and the vibe you're trying to capture.
      Thanks for watching!!
      Happy recording,

    my issue 4ft high out front is the rotation of the cymbal on a hard hit gives a phasey sound as the mic pics up alternating sides of the cymbal. that said im a fan of 1, 2, 3 mics only on a drum set. nobody's ears hear drums close micd on all the parts so it naturally sounds weird without that space and piece insteraction. plus phase issues is a waste. better off spending the money on two sexy preamps, two sick mics and a good kit that the same amount on ten average mics and pres and kit

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  2 года назад +1

      Hey Paul! Thanks for watching! Those are 4'x8' semi-poly diffusers with 1" of rigid fiberglass on the back. I had them on the back wall just to break up reflections. I've changed the room around a bit now and have taken them off the back wall since that wall is actually tilted forward. One of the polys is on another wall where I have been recording my drums lately. Since they don't have an inherent sound I can back the drums right up to the wall and not have bad reflections causing phase issues with my sound.
      I'm in the middle of several studio upgrades. When I'm done I plan on shooting several videos walking through all the changes. Including where and why I moved the diffusers.

    Which microphone are you using for this? I have some guesses but I'm interested to hear from you.
