I did not know Eskimo has derogatory meaning either !! I think it’s just us in Asia being so far away from any Inuit community. Don’t feel bad Sean! I think this is a great information for all of us viewers especially from Asia ! :)
I love the chaotic vibe in your videos lol so relatable. When you say “actually…” to something you just said so confidently, it cracks me up! Thanks for the info. Love that you wait and do the update in the same video too!
It's a real pleasure, to watch your videos! Such an interesting information and always so useful! Such beautiful and healthy plants, surrounded by care and love🙌💚🌱☀️ Grate job! Thank you! 🙏
Your apology and discussion is so, so appreciated. I imagine this might be an older variety of hoya when the term was still commonly used with less regard for the people it describes and their feelings on it. Personally, I feel weird calling a plant by a term that describes people of a certain ethnical background anyway, and I'm glad to have seen this plant showcased newly as 'Super Silver', which I'll be using from now on, and maybe you'd like to as well.
Your video was very nice and informative. I really enjoyed it. I have had Hoya plants for a while but I recently purchased this one. It’s so alarming to me that someone would take offense to the word Eskimo. I didn’t know that it would be racist and I have always been a person who respects diversity and also cultures. I am 62 years young but never used that term in a racist way. I do believe there is a lot of hate in this world right now towards all races and it’s a shame. I only wish there be peace on earth. I preach kindness all the time even at the end of each of my RUclips video. Thanks for your tutorial.
i always love your videos so much. we appreciate all the time and work you put into them amidst all of your other projects, responsibilities, and life transitions. thank you!!
That's an interesting story behind the name of this hoya. Here in Kyrgyzstan we call it Eskimo because of the name of ice cream we have here) sure we know about the inuits but this is not the reason why we call this hoya like that. Well, looks like a different countries has a different interpretations of the plant's names)
I love your videos - you're very relaxing to listen to and your approach to your plants is refreshingly earnest and candid. In addition to Nick Pileggi, you're may favourite plant RUclipsr!
I did the same thing as you in terms of propagating this plant using sphagnum moss on top of the pot. I mist the sphagnum moss every day and water the pot only when the media is completely dry. I totally agree with you that this Hoya grows really. Definitely one of my favorite Hoya.
Thank you for your apology, however I been leaving in this country for 60 years being this the first time I here that the word has offensive connotations. I loved the video lesson and I will like to get this joya, so far I can only see it on You Tube videos not on stores. Hope all your plants grow well.
Thank you for addressing the issue of racism. You are obviously a thoughtful and sensitive human being. That is a beautiful Hoya that I have added to my wishlist despite its unfortunate name. Thank you for another interesting video.
Oh wow, I never knew the word eskimo is derogatory at all, it's the first time I've heard this. I've did a bit of googling and the results were fascinating. Sadly, in my part of non-English speaking Europe, the term has been adopted as a neologism and it is imbedded in the language as the sole word to describe the populace, and, due to the geographical distance, I highly doubt that the names of each tribe or population from different areas would become commonplace to replace it. Now, in regards to the plant, the video was amazing, I saw one of these available in a store and had to learn more about it, to make up my mind if I'm going to get one or not, so thank you for a great video.
It's a similar problem here, but many people have started using the term inuit instead, which i'm pretty sure is preferred, so maybe you'd feel more comfortable using it as well
Thank you for making yourself more aware of the issues behind the existing name. Being more aware of these issues and working to making them better will help our hobby be more inclusive. Some common names have so much baggage that come with them, especially when it comes to cultivars. This particular one isn't the only one out there - a certain Tradescantia comes to mind, a certain Dieffenbachia as well. If they must be used, I'd much prefer that they be descriptive. I think it'd be cool if this variety were called something like 'Frost' or 'Ghost'.
You come from a good heart. That's the plants name. Thanks for the information! Love how you propogated it. Learned so much from this video and your video on the Peperomia Hope Propogation. Lol must've watched that one 10xs, so nervous to cut up my plant... hope I did good lol 😆
Sean, I finally got my account ! Hurray ! I can now make comments without explaining that I was using my son's account. I will make client after next video. You are the best ❣️

Beautiful Hoya cultivar! So nice to see full pots of healthy plants. There are other plants with the same name problem, one of which is Kaffir lime. Who knew?
Video idea: soil mix for hoyas 😅I see a lot of different information around the internet and youtube about it and its so confusing! Right now I'm rooting a Obovata in perlite but after that, I'm not sure what kind of soil media should I put it. Amazing video as usual :) love the updates!
Appreciate your "wokeness"! I'm afraid to propagate my Hoya's. How does one know when a plant is mature enough to propagate? Thank you for your videos, I'm learning and enjoying immensely. Stay well my plants friend.
Hi Sean and everyone! I just received a super silver Hoya that is very silver at the base but the stems have produced all green leaves. Should I cut it back to increase the silver, like in a monstera or Philodendron, or if I put it in bright light will it start producing silver leaves again? Thank you so much for your help and the amazing content! Happy planting 🌺
Hello, i would cut it back and propagate with 1 or 2 node cuttings. Some say higher light produces silver… and some say lower… I have not yet put it to the test but my instinct is in higher light 😀
Dear Sean, thank you for this impressive video. I am sure that you have the Hoya Curtisii in your collection. Can you please compare those two - the Curtisii and Krohniana? In every possible aspect - the size of the leaves, the growing speed, the blooming time, etc... Here in USA the price for Krohniana is 5 to 10 times higher than for Curtisii. You said, your Krohniana is somehow similar to Lacunosa. Well, I had a difficult time for the adaptation of Lacunosa to my growing conditions. And at the same time my Curtisii was growing like a weed. And the ESKIMO in MANY languages means just the name of old fashioned ICE CREAM.
Great video, Sean. What is the name of the pesticide you put at the end together with thd fertilizer? Does it prevent mealy bugs or other pests from coming to the leaves as well? Thanks.
I just bought this plant...some of leaves are limp in the outer branches but are rigid and plump in the inner leaves...so how do you know when to water? Appreciate your propagation videos...so much..
New leaves will always be less plump, but should plump up over time. I would let it dry out completely before watering it. Or in my case I actually water it lightly every day
I examined the soil..and the reason the plant wasn't plumping up enough was because the root development was not great..so I took out of too wet soil and too much soil for size of plant...put into chunky soil into airy pot..then, placed into one of my prop boxes with high humidity..now the leaves have recovered and leaves are very plump again. Yeah! .

Hi, thank you for the useful video! I have one question. Some of the joints and leaves of my hoya are too weak and flabby, so they fall off very easily even with a soft touch. Others seem very robust and firm. Now some of my hoyas have to stand leafless stems to get back the beautiful look they had before. This makes me sad. Do you know why this happens and how to care? I don't think it's the root problem because the leaves that fall off are random, like some of them are closer to the root while others are in the middle or so. Thank you.
I would first rule out pests as a possibility. The next could be care issue - light, watering, fertilizing. But as a rule of thumb the best way to rescue hoyas is to propagate them and start over. They are much stronger plants like this.
I’ve heard of it but I’ve never actually tried... I use worm casting and a balanced slow release fertilizer 13:13:13 on all my hoyas. I suppose something with higher phosphorus will encourage blooms but every species bloom at different conditions.
I just propped my splash yesterday and a few of the leaves have softened up. There aren’t any roots yet so I doubt it drinking too much. Is that normal?
When you say softened Im assuming they are losing water? Thats not normal, the leaves should stay quite plump throughout propagation - especially if it is water propagation. DM me with pics @bo.tan.ist if you want me to have a look

I wish for the world to be accepting and forgiving too. To move past history, or mistakes and work towards a better and harmonious future. But I am idealistic to think that because the world is full of diverse personalities and upbringing... I guess I just have to learn to live with that and be mindful as much as I can 😅

Great video, Sean. What is the name of the pesticide you put at the end together with thd fertilizer? Does it prevent mealy bugs or other pests from coming to the leaves as well? Thanks.
Yes it does. Its called carbofuran but its banned in some places. Use with caution as it is highly toxic

I understand why some people think the term Eskimo might be offensive, but it's really not. It's the same as "indigenous people" or "North American". Eskimo just refers to the northernmost North American indigenous tribes. It typically includes Inuit, Inupiat, Yupik, Aleut, etc etc.
It's important to use courteous language, but it's also important to understand where words come from. 🙂
Thank you for this clarification. It can be confusing and I guess different people have different interpretations…
Personally for me, a word is not offensive, but the way that it is said can be. It really depends on the context, the tone, and the person saying it.

Others seem very robust and firm. Now some of my hoyas have to stand leafless stems to get back the beautiful look they had before. This makes me sad. Do you know why this happens and how to care? But as a rule of thumb the best way to rescue hoyas is to propagate them and start over. They are much stronger plants like this.
Great video. I was wondering if you ever heard of using orchid fertilizer for hoyas? If you have. What’s your recommended amount to use? Thanks
I’ve heard of it but I’ve never actually tried... I use worm casting and a balanced slow release fertilizer 13:13:13 on all my hoyas. I suppose something with higher phosphorus will encourage blooms but every species bloom at different conditions.

Do you change them to soil after ?
They stay in the potting mix forever (shown at the end of the video) 😀
So do we have a suggested more acceptable name?
Is moss a better way to private? I tried soil and bag method for leaves, I took off plant I had to re pot cause it was water logged.
I love moss only because Im familiar with the moisture control of it. Use the medium that you are comfortable with or have on hand.
I just propped my splash yesterday and a few of the leaves have softened up. There aren’t any roots yet so I doubt it drinking too much. Is that normal?

Can you propagate krohniana from leaves that have broken off?
Nope but you need a section of the main stem 😀 they can root with just the leaf but will not put out a new vine 😀
When propagating to a new pot, how often should you water the plant?
That depends on many factors… the potting mix, the species of hoya, and the environment
You dont wanna smother it in water, but you dont wanna let it dry out for too long either… generally speaking. When in doubt its better to water propagate
Doesn’t the sphagnum moss keep the plant too moist? Do you remove it at any point?
Nope I keep the moss on 😀 they are kept outdoors so they do dry out very fast (in minutes)

I have a feeling they are the same. The super silver sounds way better!
So I have a pretty silly question.😬 how do you go about giving indirect sunlight with a grow light?
Depends on the watts... I dont know how to measure light I go by instincts usually ahha.
in my place, indirect sunlight usually going between 2500-3500 lux, and up to 30k lux under the sunny day's direct sunlight. and my 18watt grow light just give me around 1500-2000 lux. I wish for the world to be accepting and forgiving too. To move past history, or mistakes and work towards a better and harmonious future. But I am idealistic to think that because the world is full of diverse personalities and upbringing... I guess I just have to learn to live with that and be mindful as much as I can 😅
