Watch Live: Pike County Massacre Trial - OH v. George Wagner IV Day Seven

  • Published on Sep 19, 2022
  • George Wagner, IV is standing trial for the April 2016 murders of eight members of the Rhoden and Gilley families. Wagner IV faces 22 counts including eight counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications, aggravated burglary, conspiracy, tampering with evidence and forgery.
Wagner’s brother, Edward “Jake” Wagner, and his mother, Angela Wagner, have already pleaded guilty to taking part in the conspiracy to murder the eight Rhoden and Gilley family members over their desire to obtain full custody of the then two-year-old daughter Jake shared with victim Hanna May Rhoden. Angela and Jake Wagner have agreed to testify against their family members.
George “Billy” Wagner, the father of Jake and George, faces the same 22 counts.
On the morning of April 22, 2016, family members found Chris Rhoden, Sr., 40, and his cousin, Gary Rhoden, 38, dead in Chris’ mobile home on Union Hill Rd. Chris Sr.’s ex-wife, Dana Manley Rhoden, 37, and their children, Hanna May Rhoden, 19, and Chris Rhoden Jr., 16, were found shot in the head in their sleep in their mobile home down the road. Hanna May had given birth days earlier to a baby girl who was not harmed. Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden, 20 and his fiancee, Hannah "Hazel" Gilley, 20, were also found shot to death in their sleep. Their six-month-old son was in between them covered in blood but unharmed. Frankie’s four-year-old son was unharmed in the home as well.
Kenneth Rhoden, 44, was found shot once in the eye in his camper on Left Fork Rd. more than seven miles away.
Angela Wagner’s mother, Rita Newcomb, pleaded guilty in 2019 to a misdemeanor count of obstruction. She had been charged with forgery and obstruction of justice for lying about signing and notarizing custody documents related to Hanna May, Jake and George’s children. Newcomb has agreed to testify against her family members.
Billy Wagner’s mother, Fredericka Wagner, was initially charged with obstruction of justice and forgery for allegedly lying about purchasing a bullet-resistant vest for Billy. The charges were dropped after it was discovered a plate in the vest was manufactured after the homicides. Prosecutors have said they may refile the charges at a later date. Fredericka has been subpoenaed to testify.
    The victims:
    Christopher Rhoden Sr., 40
his ex-wife Dana Manley Rhoden, 38,
their children Christopher Rhoden Jr., 16, Hanna May Rhoden, 19, and Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden, 20,
Christopher Sr.’s cousin Gary Rhoden, 38,
    Sr.’s brother Kenneth Rhoden, 44,
and Frankie’s fiancée Hannah “Hazel” Gilley, 20
The Wagners did it so they could get custody of the young daughter Jake had with his ex Hanna Rhoden, prosecutors said. Jake indeed won sole custody of the child, now 8, after the murders. The Wagners moved to Alaska. That all changed after authorities arrested them in November 2018, sparking a legal battle lasting almost four years.

If the jury can see the evidence, and the public there can see the evidence, then it should be shown on camera.
I also believe all trials should be able to be available online.

Some evidence is blocked by the judge: dead bodies. The rest is simply not being shown. It's poor video coverage, they simply are not doing a good job. And all that camera wandering around makes me nauseated. It's badly done.

If they were trying to protect the victim’s families, this would be the prosecutor’s request. It was the defendant’s attorneys that raised this.

    • Barbara Chapman
      Barbara Chapman 6 days ago

I think they don't show them on camera because of the potential for people making them viral on the web, and the disrespect it would be to the victims and an invasion of privacy and upsetting to the family.

  • A Wright
    A Wright 15 days ago +2

I don't understand the point to a lot of the defense questions. They seem to just ask questions so they have something to say. Their whole defense is that he didn't shoot anyone and it was his family that shot them. Apparently his family says the same. He was there, but didn't shoot. Doesn't matter though because being there makes him just as guilty. So what's the point of asking all the questions about the fact that they were shot to death? That's obviously what happened. Maybe I'm missing something.
*and now he's going into caffeine, toe fungus and tattoos. What does that have to do with anything??

Female prosecutor says “Umm” nearly every sentence, bad habit that’s annoying to keep hearing. If the jury get annoyed by her too, it could affect their decision or concentration, male prosecutor is far more fluid. On live chat everyone’s commenting on her, just listening to some points again with headphones on & screamed “ UMMMMM” got so frustrated! Pray the jury don’t feel like I do! 🙏

@A Wright That’s my concern, the jury. Doesn’t matter if I’m screaming out loud or in my head I’m not sat with no escape having to make a judgment. From listening to some jurors after a case it’s not always what we think as observer’s make up their minds, would they ever admit it was the prosecutor’s “Ummms”. Every time she stands the Defence mist want to clap! 🤯😤 Really wish someone would tell her?

@Alpha Omega when I'm having trouble remembering what she said because I'm so focused on the "ummm uh aaaaand ummms", it's definitely a legitimate concern for the jury. If any of them are as distracted as I am, or irritated, then it's a problem. It doesn't come across like she is prepared or knows what's going on. All of these things can and do influence jurors. It's a huge disservice to the family and after so many years she should've known this case like the back of her hand. She should've been practicing and preparing so she can get justice for the family of the 8 victims!

@Cindy Ambach Seems like the over glamorization of the murders themselves has already flown the coop when the defense objected to how many times the very same families you mention had to endure those actual crime scene photos of the victims in court earlier. I cannot see where xrays at this point would shock them anymore than actual photos of said injuries.

    • A Wright
      A Wright 16 days ago

@Cindy Ambach maybe if you are looking at shotgun injury xrays. Regular gunshot xrays are not horrific. Most look completely normal other than a bullet or pieces of a bullet lodged in different areas. The only horrific ones I've ever seen are from a shotgun, especially in the face.
