    3:14:20 The sudden removal of Gretchen and Otto from the show was apparently necessitated by Kenneth Mars's declining health (although the episode aired in late 2004, and Mars was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer in 2006). The original storyline was supposed to involve the family spending Christmas at The Grotto, with Francis, Malcolm, and Dewey discovering that Otto was depositing his checks into a fake ATM. The ATM had been set up by a gang that included Francis's old friend Eric, who wanted revenge on Francis for leaving him in Alaska at the end of Season 4, and would be resolved by the boys getting the scammers arrested and Otto's money returned to him.

    I honestly think the ending is sad for Malcolm. He never had a choice on what to do with his life, and his family gave him unreasonably high expectations for him. • @Howesenberg

      Yeah I felt him being a janitor at the end was kinda crappy. I did feel some good emotions from how proud Lois looks at him during the graduation speech, so I think there was kind of a happy ending. Tbh one thing Lois said in that scene really has meaning that being “finally you will realize that there’s more to life then proving you’re the smartest person in the world”. One of Malcolm’s flaws that got quite annoying as the show went on was that he cared too much about what people thought about him and that caused more issues than it prevented. I’ve learned not to care about what others think. Their perception means nothing to me. I get wanting to make a good first impression, but you shouldn’t let the thoughts of others dictate your whole existence.

    A few issues I have
    Malcolm’s ego kind of got annoying as the show went on really making it difficult to root for him at times.
    I really hate how they ended the whole Francis at the ranch arc as it just felt contrived. I understand that Kenneth Mars who played Otto was ill and therefore unable to continue but I feel like they could have gone a different route like Otto dies and Francis takes over. Instead we have Francis regress back to his immature self discarding his development and I really hate when stories do that. I mean at least he got a happy ending but still:

    • @mistercappuccino
      @mistercappuccino Год назад +30

      TL;DR: Malcolm a shit
      I don't think you're really supposed to ever root for Malcolm. When I think of Malcolm, I think of him standing alone at Cynthia's party that he was "so smart" to think wouldn't happen after exposing Cynthia to a bunch of really hateful things written about her. I think of Malcolm with his face puffed up from poison ivy because he didn't get the girl he thought he deserved.
      The writers had two options, I think. They could have made Malcolm the hero, or just a really intelligent person. If you stick to the former, I think it's very hard to avoid Flanderising/Mary Sue-ing them up (look at Rick Sanchez) without serious character development (which is unrealistic in an episodic show with isolated storylines). The latter, the very intelligent person, would realistically have a ridiculous ego that makes them unlikeable in many situations.
      That's where Dewey comes in! His later depictions have him be a genius AND empathetic. Since he's so jaded by his place at the bottom of the family (before Jamie) and being related to somebody who will always be the "first" genius of the family, we have an example of what Malcolm could have been if he had to put in the effort like Dewey had to with his music and in his class of people with learning disabilities, both of which taught him to be an independent and better person (also the fact that Malcolm literally COULD NOT create a song is so funny compared to Dewey, as Malcolm doesn't seem to really try at anything so he's outed for his arrogance in how he has to copy the Fancy Feast or Meow Mix song, I don't remember which it is, to prove to his family that he can do anything).

      Francis leaving the Ranch and the way they went about it was just lazy writing. There's absolutely no way that the character they conveyed to us in Otto would have sued Francis of all people for making a mistake.

    • @cachedreamer
      @cachedreamer Год назад +14

      @@user-qv5sm5dw1v That isn't how it goes. Plenty of shows have had to make last minute changes due to events like that and yet still had the explanations make sense.
      Otto wouldn't have sued anyone for a mistake, let alone Francis. I understand that they had to flip the script, but they could have very easily thought of an explanation that didn't completely contradict the character of Otto. Almost any story would have been more believable and satisfactory than the one they gave us.
      He didn't actually even need to leave the ranch, but I could understand them going that route if they actually had a finite plan for him - the problem is that they didn't. They did almost nothing with him over the last few seasons.
      Francis went from having the best character progression in the series to a complete stagnation, if not regression even. The way they dealt with him in the later seasons was just them keeping him around.

      @@cachedreamer I mean, MAYBE Otto might have sued Francis if the amount of money was great enough that Gretchen and Otto lost the ranch. My personal Top 10
    1. Reese Joins The Army Part 1 & 2 - (I love the balance of humor, absurdity, and drama)
    2. Long Drive - (One of the only episodes where I loved every single story and subplot in it)
    3. Pearl Harbor - (I think it's hilarious yet touching, and has surprisingly aged well)
    4. Watching The Baby - (Such a simple, yet hilarious episode. I love the store Phil Collins uprising)
    5. Malcolm's Girlfriend - (A hilarious yet pretty spot on portrayal of insecure, adolescent love)
    6. Forwards Backwards - (Love how the story shows how petty both Malcolm & Reese can be)
    7. Bowling - (A classic episode)
    8. Grandma Sues - (I love the family dynamics and how the drama just builds to the inevitable blowup)
    9. Block Party (The concept alone is hilarious, but the execution is top notch)
    10. Butterflies ( Tough choice, but I think this episode is very clever with it's story and how Malcolm manages to even screw that up)
    Honorable Mentions (There's a lot since I love so many episodes)

    I think the names for the classes (the Buseys and the Krelboynes) are not suppose to be in universe references to Gary Busey and Seymour Krelboyne, but are more likely just named after someone else in that universe that just happens to have these similar names. In the Krelboyne fair episode, they actually have that name stylized on a banner, so they are definitely not just derogatory names for these groups in universe, they are just loathsome programs to be involved with, in universe.

    S2E25- Flashback is honestly one of my favorite episodes. It is a hilarious episode with comedy bits landing in every scene. And I dont think there is any other episodes that gives us so much "lore" for Wilkerson family. Not just individually, because they show a great job doing that. They show the kind of people Hal and Lois are before the kids. And how the individual kids came to be their unique selves, with and without the influences with each other.
    This episode also shows how their interactions with each other also helped them develop into who they are as individuals.
    But most importantly, the thing that really gets me is that this episode may be the first, and arguably the most intimate, look at the relationship between Hal and Lois. Like as a kid, of course I laughed and identified with the kids. But as an adult I'm starting to connect more with the sub plots between the parents.
    I will argue that Hal and Lois are the perfect TV couple, and even parents, till the day I die. And this episode is the episode to prove that. Sure they're not perfect, but in this episode shows how far they will go to not only make the relationship work, but also keep the family together.
    The little smile that Dewey gives at the end before its interrupted by the other brothers fighting perfectly sums it up. Deep down they all love each other, deep down there is happiness. The fighting they go through isn't even a fight with each other, it's symbolic of what they would go through TO BE THEIR FOR EACH OTHER! EVEN WHEN ITS HARD ON THEMSELVES! Yeah. Oneof my favorite episodes

    i just started watching it, and you made this video. I always loved this show as a kid and a teen, even now i still do. I knew Bryan Cranston was a good actor because of this show and he's pretty much the reason i started watching Breaking Bad, it was refreshing to see how from a goofy character to turn into such a badass. I heard that people were saying he wouldn't fit the role of Walter White, but he proved everyone wrong. I even love the show more now, cause it's just so relatable, and helps me see the characters in a better light.
