The high statistics didn't start until 1970 with a number of weather satellites dedicated to tropical cyclones. There may have been hundreds of deep water, high wind storms never counted before 1960 or so. Most storms highly documented before 1950, hit high populated areas and were mostly recorded by storm surge flooding. I think the largest number of recognized North Atlantic storms was in the 1930s and they weren't named back then. If you assume at least 30% were not noticed as deepwater only storms that entire decade was bad.
