    I want BBC to do a digital version of Ceefax as a retro mode for Red Button as an anniversary for it.

    We were the first people in our street to get a teletext set. The reason being is that before ceefax, my dad had to walk up to the bookies to find out if his horses had won. As soon as he found out that he could find out racing results within minutes of the race taking place and then only go there if he’d won, he was straight off to radio rentals.

    Perfect analogy, the comparison with preserving the experience of steam trains. Teletext is something I do hope will never be forgotten by the history books. It was really the world's first on demand information service, which is an achievement not to be undervalued.

    Fun fact: in sweden when then switched to digital tv they decided to make a digital version of teletext but it looked EXACLY like it always did although most channels don’t use it anymore (I know svt still uses it but tv4 and tv5 and a few other channels turned it off) so yeah

      It’s part of the DVB standard so it IS teletext, same as it was before, still compatible with a teletext decoder from 1976 and forward.
      Most digital boxes also insert teletext into the video signal when using SCART/composite.

    Loved teletext grwing up. Used to check out the music pages and BBC had an 8 bit computer section updated on a Sunday morning. Used to put subtitles on for a bit of fun, and then forgot I had done it. I'd go to bed and my parents would get annoyed as they didn't know how to turn them off! My dad eventually got to grips with it. He was 80 last week and still uses the internet daily if he's not at a karoake bar.

    If I could start my own country, I would definitely offer a Teletext service on the TV channels in my country! Always good to have a backup for if your internet goes down! Not to mention, with the recent announcement of Sky Glass, a streaming TV, I've been questioning whether new tech is worth getting excited for anymore. Smartphones and tablets need to be replaced every 3-4 years, your internet is prone to the occasional outage, the streaming market is getting too saturated and a lot of it is making me long for the 90s and even (to a lesser extent) the 2000s! Disney are foolish for making me pay for Disney+ on top of my Sky subscription by shutting down their satellite channels last year! Teletext may not have offered as much functionality as the internet, but at least it took less time to setup!

    the digital switch over killed ceefax

    • @GeoNeilUK
      @GeoNeilUK 2 года назад +3

      And the thing is, it didn't have to. Pretty sure even on digital cable (from Telewest) back in the 2000s the channels carried Teletext in their digital transmissions alongside whatever the digital text was, I think Freeview channels carried Teletext as well as whatever Red Button service the channels had to pre-analogue switch off.
      So the old teletext services could have carried on over digital TV.
