That's an oaten hay seed, certain types of oaten hay have these seeds, whenever I found it I would switch brands to find a hay source that used a different type of grass with softer seeds. There are many different breeds of oat grass, not all have hard seeds.
My boy Pompom had the same thing happen, I came out one morning as a tiny little piece of seed was sticking out the corner of his eye. I grabbed tweezers and gently pulled it out, and this loooong seed came out that was wedged behind his eye. I should have left it for a vet to do, but I didn't think it was going to be that bad. Poor Pompom screeched in pain when I pulled it out.
Straight to the vet, they did the green-dye test which showed it had scratched the eye. So we had to give him antibiotic eye drops for several days. It did clear up after about a week and he was fine from there.
If you see these seeds in your hay, the risk is small, but it is there. Hay providers will switch the grass used in their hay between many different species through the growing season, so you may need to temporarily switch to a new brand with softer seed pods if you want to completely avoid the possibility of this happening.

Poor baby piggy, luckily there eyes heal very well with the proper medication. Saskia always says most eye stuff can be treated with huge success rate
I had a piggy, Moose, that had such a big piece of hay in his eye I thought he poked it out. We got to the vet asap and I too saved the hay from his eye. 176 bucks with meds. got most of his sight back. I miss him daily.
That's great that the vet could find and get the piece out right away! Baby piggies are resilient...I'm sure the eye will heal right up!
I agree I had one of my girls, who sadly is across the Rainbow Bridge Fall from my shoulder to the floor which was about a 5-foot drop and suppressed her spinal cord. She was 7 months old. The vets initially wanted me to put her down, but I asked if they could check on her again. And shockingly she still had feeling in one of her back feet and so they had me give her twice a day for 2 weeks anti-inflammatory meds to see if that would help her recover. I had separated her from the herd so she wouldn't be stepped on as well as to see if she was going to the bathroom on her own or if she was struggling. She shockingly made a full recovery to the shock of the veterinarian.
She’s so good about those eye drops! I had one a couple years ago who got a nasty eye infection from a hay poke, and it took 3 people to get the drops in because she was not having it. You’re blessed to have such a little angel lol. Hope she gets better soon ❤

Yep very important, we had the exact same thing with one of our boys very recently and it's amazing how long the piece of hay was in his eye and still couldn't see it. It was right in the corner underneath the eyelid. It had made an ulcer on his eye but he healed up so quickly once the hay was out.

One of our girls loved to burrow in hay and must have got about 4 hay strikes over the 6 years we had her. Some piggies are prone to these things I guess. They always cleared up though. Get well soon baby pig😚
The exact same thing happened to my guinea pig Buttercup. She had what I called "Terminator eye" where it was completely red like that. The vet couldn't get her in for a week. Looking back, I really wish I had tried to find another vet clinic that took guinea pigs. If anyone else is in a similar situation, it's more important to get your guinea pig to a vet quickly than to stick with the vet you know. When I got her to the vet it was the very first week that everything shut down for Covid and I couldn't go into the building, so I had to hand her over in the parking lot and explain what was going on. Buttercup was not a cuddly pig, she liked her space, and if you tried to pick her up she would fight you like she was fighting a murderer for her life. I have a few bite marks on my arms and she drew blood a couple of times. Since I couldn't go into the appointment, I can't imagine how she was with the vet. They brought her out and said she was "very wiggly" and I was like sure, mm-hmm. Now, I suspect that her behavior may have kept them from doing a thorough examination of her eye because they never said they found anything in her eye, they gave me drops to put in 4 times a day, no pain meds and made a follow-up appointment. The redness went away, but her eye was still constantly oozing. I took her to the vet a total of SIX times, they gave me an ointment to apply 4 times a day and eventually it stopped oozing, but her eye was never right after that. She didn't act like she was in pain, so I hope she wasn't, but if I had it to do over again I 100% would've gotten a 2nd opinion. I really, really hope Julia has a better outcome. At least her vet sounds better, so that seems like a good sign.

omg thank you so much ❤️❤️ baby pig is doing so much better already! we're still treating her but her eye has healed a ton. now we're going to have to wait whether she'll regain 100 percent eye sight but there's no risk of removing the eye or anything anymore. she's also feeling way better... she's gotten quite annoyed at me putting creme and drops in lol

So....I think she just earned her name....Blinky!! You're probably really lucky that she is so you as they heal much quicker. How old is she again? I had a one eyed bunny named Pebbles who was my soul bunny...she had an injury as a baby and they removed it when she was spayed at 5 months. I adopted her shortly after and then I was diagnosed with Thyroid Eye disease...so we had a bond like I had with no other of my bunnies or piggies. Caring for these little ones keeps us on our toes!! Snuggles to you all!!

I also had a guinea pig that had a terrible eye injury (hole in the cornea). The Vet said that they would have to remove the eye if it doesn't heal within a week. I treated the pig for 4 weeks with Floxal and Vitamin D salve and only after these 4 weeks it got better. It completely healed then. So please don't give up too early!

As our Boy got older and his Eyes Fisheyes, Glaucoma, got worse that was one of our biggest Concerns. Eye Injuries on Guinea Pigs can be horrendous. When he was 7 he got one removed as he couldn't close it right anymore.
Wasn't a loss than, as he lost Sight on both Eyes already.
He didn't seem to be in to much Pain about his Eyes either. He was a regular at the Vets to get his Teeth clipped too.
Poor Baby pig❤ . Have just gone through this with my Merry. We were very lucky as we had to do the eye every hour for 2 weeks plus antibiotics and pain medication. We would bribe her at drop time with pieces of grass.😊. From what I can see Baby pig looks way less severe than Merry's was (they were worried she would have to have it removed) and she bounced back with just a little scarring on her eye. Baby pig looks like she has the same stoic/fighter spirit so I'm sure she'll be ok. 8:11

My youngest piggy had an eye injury like that. It was very red and I honestly thought he was blind and might loose the eye, but after a few days it healed and went back to normal and he still sees fine with it.

Other than the pain, which is terrible, often they can use a special gel to help heal that poor eye. I am so sorry to hear about this. Good luck wee baby piggy! I hope she does well. Amputate is extremely rare with a piggy, and very extreme. I had a piggy years ago that had a humungous piece of hay stuck in the eye - we didn't have all of the things of today and we were able to nurse her eye back. I have seen it many times on LAGPR (Saskia)'s channel and I have yet to see anyone talk about amputation. I even saw one time on Incredible Dr. Pol where he put the gel on and gave that and meds and said at worst, it may be a permanent scratch, but at best, full recovery (which did happen in that case - full recovery thankfully). One time I did see a piggy who ended up with a permanently scratched eye because the owner didn't get her to the vet in time - waited like 2 weeks! That poor piggy. Easily could have been avoided. 😞

I have two guinea pigs that really like to jump over each other and run into each other when they're doing zoomies. Unsurprisingly one of them got a pretty good eye injury (I'm pretty sure she got kicked in the face) it luckily cleared up pretty fast and she took the antibiotic eye drops well as long as I was the one doing it.
I think she still has a mark/scar on her eye even months later but she doesn't act like it impacts her sight. They still play rough with each other so I'm ever vigilant for more kicks to the face.
(I would say I hope they'll calm down but one is five and the other is four and this is significantly calmer than the four year old was when she was one)

Coincidentally, I took my dwarf hamster to the vet this morning for a suspected eye injury. No scratches, fortunately, but he gets eye drops all the same.
Fingers crossed that little girl's eye isn't damaged. But then, our critters deal with things better than we do. Get well soon, baby.❤
My older male sadly got traumatic cataract in one eye at 6 months old. From a smal crystal to fully white in two more weeks. Nothing we can do, got an eye specialist for small animals involved, but there are no artificial lenses that small to change the damaged one.
He lives a completely normal live despite being almost completely blind on one side. Unfortunate but not life defineing :)
I have a couple of piggies and some of them had a piece of hay in their eye. We have from the brand 'Beaphar' eye gel with vit a and it worked so good! Didn't had to go to the vet every time and always have pain meds just in case. Hope it recovers quickly but I'm sure it will! ❤
i remember this happening to my Remy, luckily it was just as really bad hay poke and the eye drops they gave her healed her eye. The only difference was Remy's eye was clouded and white not red :( hoping the baby heals soon

I caught a glimpse of the bad eye during the car ride and winced. Owwie poor Baby Pig. fingers crossed. She's very polite when you're applying the medicine at least.
Edit: That looks like a bit of grass from the top of the hay, like where the seeds would be. poor pig!

Is she getting the eye salve with vitamin A (Retinyl palmitate, not sure if that is in the human version)? This has done wonders for my guinea pigs, even when my late Roos managed to get a huge abrasion (Abschürfung) on her eye and my vet was very unsure it would heal, it healed just fine. Fingers crossed here for baby pig 🤞

I really hope baby pig recovers well. I don't know if it helps, but one of our piggies had to have his eye removed after an infection even though we did everything we could for him, the medication just wasn't enough. He was 1 1/2 years old. He came through fine and does fine with one eye and is now 5 1/2 years old. Also, I think he thinks he's still the baby pig even at 5 1/2 years old 😂. x
im worried this could happen to my boy..he had a hay poke resulting in conjunctivitis that wont go away despite several rounds of different antibiotic eye drops 😢 Im glad your boy recovered well after surgery. Ive also heard of eye removal surgeries where the infection still lingers in the socket tho 😩
@@existentialbread5906 I'm so sorry your boy's eye isn't improving, it's always difficult when that happens. We were advised about the possibility of infection in the eye socket depending on if/where the infection travels. However, the vet that did the eye removal felt they'd gotten everything out well, we just had to monitor for any symptoms. Our little man came through well, but then decided to take his own stitches out the day before the the vet was due to take them out. His eye area was fine, but he sprained his wrist. However, with pain medication and time his arm also healed fine.

Be very careful make sure she doesn’t get sick. my guinea pig Tilly passed away due to respiratory infection due to a weekend immune system from an eye injury and he on antibiotics but please make sure to keep an watch on her for any signs of sickness… maybe even separating the little piggy from the herd I know that sounds hard, but it’s best to not have any other piggies messing with her eye
My bonded piggie also had a completely red eye. She ended up fine, so don't worry too much. Just make sure to monitor her

I have seen guinea pigs with far worse eyes due to hay pokes and after getting it out and a week of treatment the eye was back to normal.

I’ve dealt with Hay Poke twice now. One of my two furred girls managed one. Less than two weeks after we got her, on a Saturday Afternoon in 2020. Cost us nearly 400$ USD for an emergency vet visit…she recovered no issues…
One of my Skinnies managed to do the same, she earned the nickname of One Eyed Jack after. Thankfully it also healed no issues, and wasn’t an emergency visit so cost about the standard 100$ USD visit…
I actually have a new baby pig, she’s a 6 week old Werewolf Skinny Pig. And after watching all the mischief she likes to get into I pray she doesn’t do anything g warranting a vet visit…
Even if I’m sure the vet and the techs would love to see her. My Skinnies are always the hit of the office whenever they go in…😂😂😂

Oh my gosh, how wild and yes, thankful you were able to get her in so quickly! So scary as we all see some funky and hay that is more sturdy and strong and not thinking that it could be a threat to our piggies. Thank you for sharing and will keep her in prayers for speedy healing! She is adorable!!
