  • Nigerians having a reputation as criminals is not a mistake, it is intentional.
This series explores how Nigeria and Nigerians are intentionally branded as criminals to support the economic and social goals of foreign interests. I will also be describing how Nigerians, and other people, can push back against these attempts to damage our reputation.
Part two describes how our own words are used against us, with examples, and gives some suggestions about how Nigerians must push back against the branding.
If you are interested in this, please write a comment below and I will see what I can do to incorporate answers to questions in the final part of the series.

Thank you mama you nailed it.. Being a African American I close to the black community I have met many Nigerians including in college. 98% of them were great people who were smart and ambitious. We can learn a lot from them. Few were problematic its the same with all communities there were not unique and sound not be used to generalize an entire people. Thanks again.

I used to feel ashamed when other people misbehaved as I felt it reflected poorly on me, it can be very taxing on the mind. Now I realise that to humanise those people, I need to embrace their right to express themselves on every spectrum as they see fit, in time they might grow and gain a different perspective or not. This is the path to equality. It also does not help that there are many popular cases of Nigerians squandering the positions of trust they have been given, no culture is perfect and we need to own the baggage that comes with ours, we all saw yellow fever taking bribes. . .

I agree that there are people who have abused their positions of trusted authority but this is not specific or particular to Nigeria as a country or to Nigerians as a people.
It is very dangerous when Nigerians thoughtlessly complain about criminals who happen to be Nigerians or events in Nigeria, when that criminal behaviour is not in any way particular or specific to Nigeria.
Or when we take our frustrations about say, a particular pickpocket who stole *our* purse and start declaring that there is a problem beyond that specific thief.
Such 'complaints' enable the disparaging of Nigeria by foreign media - for profit.
See the Nowogh Talks video on this ("Foreign News Lies to Control Nigeria - For Profit!") and also the next parts of "The Criminal Branding of Nigeria".

I concur with you on all the issues addressed in this video.
Furthermore, I submit that the greatest culprits are not the Occidental racists and xenophobes, but unintelligent and unpatriotic Nigerians. Sadly, some of our so-called celebrities belong to this class. For instance, whenever these celebrities travel abroad, they make denigrating comments about Nigeria 🇳🇬. Sadly, many of them are not even abreast of the facts of the subject matter of which they lampoon their country.
Secondly, Nigerian content creators and their respondents have generated far more negativity than the defendants of 'Whiteness'. These unpatriotic elements amplify negative news and downplay the successes of Nigeria. Other Africans have joined the bandwagon and spew the stereotypical nonsense about Nigerians.
Finally, our media and entertainment industries should do more by projecting Nigeria's prowess.

      Thank you for your comment.
I think you may like some of my other videos as they address the points you have made.
I am not sure though if it is fair to lay the blame for our country's reputation problems mostly on Nigerians who keep yabbing Nigeria or repeating negative stereotypes.
The people you you are naming unintelligent and unpatriotic are often encouraged - subtly - by the foreign media, and our damaged reputation is then exploited for profit.
The organisations who are controlling the "occidental racists and xenophobes" as you put it, are the very people doing the encouraging. Have a look at "Foreign News Lies To Control Nigeria - For Profit!"
I think you will enjoy the next parts of the "Criminal Branding of Nigeria" as they explain in more detail why the negative branding has occurred - and who really benefits from it.

      Thank you for your comment.
I agree, many Nollywood movies are just sensationalist entertainment and don't portray positive, meaningful narratives of our nation.
Social Media however... we need to be careful what we like, watch, and particularly share with each other.
Because every time we share something negative about Nigeria, the social media algorithms think this is something people care about, and then display this content to others as representative of Nigeria.
There are practical political consequences for our nation and people when we say or repeat negative things about Nigeria - particularly when we broadcast it on Social Media. I cover this in the next parts of my series on "The Criminal Branding of Nigeria"

I'm literally crying my heart out, right now. This has been my fight with Nigerians online who are always quick to talk down and spew negativity about their own country. I have told many of them that, they are assisting in the destruction of their country's and their children's future.
