Chex Mix on the Griddle

- Yes, you can make Chex mix on the griddle, and it's fantastic! Actually, I'll probably never make my bold chex mix in the oven again!
Every year during the holidays, I make a giant batch of my favorite bold and savory Chex mix recipe. But this year, I decided to make my Chex mix on the griddle, and since I make so much at one time, I had to use the Blackstone griddle and the Pit Boss griddle at the same time!
I'll show you just how easy it is to make griddle chex mix... give it to your neighbors as holiday gifts or keep it for football snacks! Enjoy!

OMG - you need to bring me some!! Granny did make some awesome Scrabble!! Great Job Guys!!!
I have tried to bring you some
Man, great idea. I grew up with a similar mix, I’m 64. Their was a seasoning my mother would use that gave a salty, savory combination that is, to this day, unmistakable in my memory. For the life of me I do not know what that seasoning is.
I did know there were times when she couldn’t find the seasoning and did her own thing….not as good. I’ve never thought about just doing what you like and am excited about trying it. Mom just roasted the mix in turkey roasters as well. The smoker is the obvious modern day answer to that….EPIC!
Thank you for bringing back fond memories and starting new ones.
PS… If anyone my age remembers what seasoning was in traditional use 50+ years ago, please, please respond here.
Blessings and merry Christmas
thats how exactly my granny made it growing up...huge turkey roasters....let me know
@@TheFlatTopKing
I will post the recipe if we find it. My wife is going through moms recipes….boatload of them.
Neal..."quote..how long you been eating out of a trash bag " ? 😂 Love it..thanks guys
hahahahha just the redneck in me....everything from breading fish...chex mix,,,and camping goods...
Hahahaha! I just cackled out loud and woke up my Golden Retriever, Swayze Stone, when you said “scrabble”! That’ll be funny when you see my earlier comment about words being made up when you said heatness on another video. . What a hilarious coincidence. Had to be me, I guess. Damn, that’s a lot of laughter for 6:30am.
Y’all have a good one today!
thanks bud....
Like you, I can remember my Grandmother making this. She called it party mix, my Dad makes it now and he starts around Thanksgiving and makes it several times before the end of the year. We always have it for Christmas morning.
That was exactly the time frame for us as well.....thanks for commenting
Love that you use kix. It was my father-in-laws favorite. I have made it that way for over 30 years. ❤❤❤
awesome Sherri
I make this every year too, but always in the oven. This reduced cooking time on the flat top is very intriguing!!! No compromise on flavor at all? Its a winner if all things are equal, thats for sure. Thanks for sharing!!
Honestly I didn’t think so...just try to keep heat down and keep it moving...I have out down a whole bowl already ahahahahahha
@@TheFlatTopKing Hahaha, I get it!! I usually wait til End of Nov to make this for Christmas time. ALWAYS ending up making a second batch not even half way thru December!
@@robwilkie5382 hahaha yes sir
That looks like a smorgasbord of deliciousness. I like the way you think outside of the box 👑.
Well thanks Robert...really appreciate that
More seasoning, means more beer.......................................................win/win!!
hahahahaahhaahhahaa you said it.....
Epic Chex Mix
Never would have thought of that! Awesome!!! Thank you
Yes sir....
Our family has called it “trash” for generations. Griddle is a great idea!
thanks Joseph
That's a creative mixing method sir. Kudos.
I think we might be trying our first omelets on the Pit Boss tomorrow, maybe.
Yes sir....keep griddle low and add butter to check your temps....
@@TheFlatTopKing I’ve got that ThermoWorks IR gun - had it ages before I ever found your channel to check the temp of pizza stones, grill domes, etc. What range am I shooting for, about 350 - 400?
@@praetorxyn NO………. High 200 low 300. It will be fast because the temps continue to build,,,,,, might need one burner off. That helps. Have all ingredients ready and griddle at right temp before eggs go down
@@TheFlatTopKing Will definitely need burners off then, as if they're all on the cooler right side temps about 400 - 450 >_>
@@praetorxyn mine as well.
Thanks
Welcome
Very well done! The trash bag is the best way to mix that much product. It doesn't have to be "food grade" because you're not cooking in the bag. But what do I know? I drank from the hose outside as a kid. I know this concoction as Nuts and Bolts. I have the same pellet grill that you have. What pellets did you use? Did I miss it? Thank you, and keep on bringing us these recipes!
Hey thanks Tim, the water hose statement is perfect. I am sure in the hopper I have competition blend in there, thanks for the support
A+ for creativity on this one. You've definitely made the flattop a versatile cooking machine. My family has always referred to it as "party mix" up here in South Dakota. Glad to see another person add wheat chex to theirs. I've always liked the chewiness it provides. Great video guys!
funny because thats exactly why I do as well...thanks bud
Wow wow wow!!! I’ve been making party mix/Chex mix or “trash” (as I was raised to call it) ever since I owned my own oven! The trash bag is a game changer for me. Thank you SO much for sharing that information! I can’t wait to make my holiday batch & will definitely use my Blackstone. Thanks for all your videos. You’ve definitely helped me out a lot!
That is awesome! thanks so much...when you do...let me know. I would like to hear your thoughts
Using a large shaker for your spice mix will help cover the mix more uniformly.
Great tip!
Game Changing Chex mix my Brotha! Love the Kix/Bugles/cheese it twist 😋👌! Sorry im late to this episode. My sister is in town from Central Washington on vacation, so was busy doing the family thing. But great idea using the flattop instead of the oven. Shoot, set me up with 1 of those gift tins 😂😉👌!! Cheers y’all 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
hahshhhs have a blast with fam....heck its almost gone....hahahahah
@@TheFlatTopKing thank you Sir, will do.
Im straight in here for this one, 👍👍👍😎🇬🇧
Such a great idea using the trash bag! Mixing that huge batch would have been an absolute pain otherwise. 👍😊
HHHHEEEEYYYYYYY thanks Bobbi.....
Love your videos.
Glad you like them, Thanks Henry
I made this a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. I guess it's time to make another batch. Good one.
Yes sir....
Interesting cook. Never had this before. My wife does it in an oven.
Absolutely....never even thought about being on the griddle....super easy with that much product
I started laughing when I heard all the ingredients thinking "what is Neal up to this time?". That does look really good I just wonder if the one on the smoker should be cooked a lower temperature to infuse more smoke flavor? Either way it looks great.
hahhahaha I personally did not like the smoke but alot of people do it....it wasnt for me
Perfect snack for the season Neil, great job 👏. Cheers 🍻
thanks bud
Nuts and bolts.
Yum, may give this one a try!
Absolutely
Here in the PNW we make something similar where we add melted white chocolate to the mix, resulting in "White Trash," where of course it's mixed in a trash bag.
Heck yeah.....trash bag for the win
What's the PNW?

Dude!!! This may be the coolest thing you've ever done on the flattop!! So creative, loved your choices, I could eat fistful after fistful of that!!! Awesome man!!
ahahahha well i have already...thanks Paul
Excellent Neal!! I really thought about making some on my pit boss pellet grill to add that smoky flavor.🍻
You should! It wasnt my favorite but something is better than nothing,...
I’m from East TN as well (goooo Vols to beat Bama this weekend!!!) and will definitely make this recipe this weekend. I love watching your videos and all the wonderful ideas you have each time. Keep up the great work👍
Man Bob...what an atmosphere it will be will both College Gameday and SEC network...330 game late in the fall and all the anticipated building....what a day it will be
This looks delectable! I could snack on that all day! Very cool to see both griddles going together. I was thinking maybe baby marshmallows, then I started thinking, smoked marshmallows? Is that a thing? Should it be? Maybe some jumbo marshmallows should be thrown in a smoker. Then, random desserts. S'mores. Cake toppings. Random 0400 thoughts lol.
haahahaahahaha
Smoked Chex Mix is the bomb, I won’t do it any other way now
Awesome...its almost gone..hahahahah
@@TheFlatTopKing never lasts long at my house either
This is a game changer… 🙌
Well done sir!
Thanks bud
This is awesome! Wonder how Caramel Chex Mix will turn out and cant wait to make it!
No clue but maybe my first thought was the sugar getting to hot..unless your adding the caramel afterwards
So how was the batch that you smoked?
I personally was not the biggest fan...alot of people do it...it wasnt for me...Bad nope, great nope...just did like the overall flavor
Great idea
Thank you!
I would need the little fishes in it. Thats a great idea never would of thout
ahhahhaahhaaha
Yup! I add the fishies too!👍🏻😉😎
I need to make I normal do mine in the smoker and we enjoy it
Can’t wait to try this…
Yes sir
Great idea! Though it's kinda cold and snowy up here to be breaking out the griddle today. I sawcthe comment about food grade plastic and drinking from the garden hose. Would it be easier to mix that large amount in a large storage container or cooler?
And heck! Ya could even store it in there!👍🏻😉😎
Have you ever made the oyster cracker snack mix? With dry ranch mix and I use butter flavored oil. That would also be easy to make on the griddle.
I haven’t thought about a cooler and yes absolutely that would work...just grew up on trash bags...never knew any different...as far as the oyster cracker snack mix I have never heard of that...in any shape or form....now im very interested
"Trash" is what my late mom used to call it. Seeing you mix it all up in a trash bag reminded me of that.
hahhahahah great name...thanks Zack
Yummy great ideal awesome👌🏾❤
thanks Erma
You forgot the pecans and other nuts! Yummmmmm
Yeah we just cleaned out the pantry with that we had...
Never heard it called scrabble and I’m from Tennessee too. I call it Chex Mix. My grandmother calls it Nuts and Bolts when she makes it.
There we go...first alternate name....love it thanks
Great idea. How did the smoked mix turnout? Pick up much smoke?
I did..honestly I was not the biggest fan. one of the very few times I have said I did not like smoke...just didn’t need it...good on its own. But you never know unless you try
We call ours Texas Trash and yes I am from Texas. Also, we add cayenne for heat and liquid smoke for the smoke flavor.
Yes sir....this is the first I had ever added Nashville Hot and I had always added cayennne ...honestly i kinda like it....its hot with more seasoning,,,,thanks Brad
This was one of my favorites as a a kid. My Mom used to make huge batches of this for all of us. Unfortunately.... I don't think I can afford it here on Maui.... Cereal here is just stupid expensive
WOW...I would think so...definitely understandable
You are fantastic at driving away the people that say well I wouldn't do this I would do that. Like it put it in don't like it don't put it in do you!
Thats my mission statement....Every single one of us on this planet has to eat...might as well eat what you like...
Well now you have done it, my bride thinks this is a must try, right now and will be a fare offered for the holidays. SHE wants to try making it, there goes my exclusivity on the griddle ol master.
hahhahahaha great snack for the guys at camp
@@TheFlatTopKing , yep and ya make it by the bucket.
How would you rate the batch from the smoker compared to the regular?
Honestly I wasn’t a fan...the very few times in my life where I thought smoke was not what it needed....bad No great No just good with smoke flavor
So did you smoke it first then go to the flat top? Or are they two different batches?
Just two different batches..
How did the smoked one turn out?
I honestly didnt like it as much as I thought I would. One of the few times in my life that i have said smoke was not needed...that being said was it great...NO...was it bad NO...just normal
Sorry, have to do it……
“Wooster-sher”.
hahahahaha
I smoke cheez-its all the time, i may need to upgrade to smoked chex mix next time.
Yes sir
I usually use Cheezits to bread bass or crappie...
Great video! We just call it Trash.
thanks bud
Did you sell your Camp Chef griddle?
Yes...we made multiple videos about the ideas and process about it
I was about to ask if the bag was scented......
We always called them Doo-dads. GBO!
thats interesting....haven't heard that one...GBO
Where is the bacon grease ? We use 1/2 butter and half bacon grease. Corn and Rice Chex, Crispix, stick pretzels, cashews, garlic powder, onion powder, garlic salt and roast it in a turkey roaster, basting and seasoning multiple times over about 2 hours roasting in a 275 deg. oven. We do it the best. PERIOD ! You need lots of seasoning and lots of bacon grease and butter. BOOM !
The turkey roaster is how we did it growing up...the bacon grease was never done...never even thought of...but I like it now that I have heard it..
@@TheFlatTopKing this makes me want to try smoking it lol
We call it "Trash". We also cook in in a roasting pan like you would use for making chicken and dressing in.
thanks Joyce...thats how my granny made it....the old roasting pans...
My wife's family calls it Graffiti.
Interesting thanks
👍👍👍👍❤️🙏
thanks Chip
6:10, the dude just tells you the truth if you're a phoney and so dellusional. Love people who break people bones for that with a pinch of truth. Awesome video btw. People thinking that trash bags are disgusted, not realizing that they're actually clean if you never used them and it's the way to go. I agree. thought it was common sense.
thanks for that...funny how we also used to drink from water hoses when kids....heck I still do....
@@TheFlatTopKing hahaha, same. As a kid, you don't care, you just want your food and a bev. Everybody used to do that ngl.
with that much use a NEW Harbor Freight cement mixer. they are dirt cheap.
Yes we call it trash
I love ya Neil and Amy but trash bags aren't food grade plastic... thats a hard no for me!
I call it Texas Trash
Awesome Janice...thanks
Hey Neal, I have a favor to ask of you. I need to lose some weight and I know that you lost 60 pounds or so. Can you make a video on how you lost your weight? What you ate how much you exercised? That would be great if you could! Love your show!
we have thought about that...i never exercised in that time...just healthy eating.
Just be honest I just watched my carbs like crazy...no sugars and no unnecessary bread...protein and vegetables with light dairy and fruit
