So in short: instead of direct external validation, social media motivates us through others’ recognition of us being validated. Trippy.

I was around when forums were the social media, and forum people tend to have real life meets more than today's many online-only course for social. Since I felt neither sincerity or authenticity was rewarded or even if it did I seemed to have missed the validation entirely, so I was left to go either minding my own or to go online to have my social time, surprisingly for almost 20 years being terminally online, its been that way, its shallow, but some numbers seem like better reminder than sheer emptiness I felt from even the sincere compliments(not that I didn't count my blessing, emotions just seem too self-detached due to some reasons seemingly objective against it)
I'll quote your short to remind me how a long winded, and self-manipulating way it is to feel validated through social media

@@Shiruvan Kinda wonder about the aspect of social media superseding meat space, with the very limited interaction afforded social media. It's like amputating your personality.
And very strange that this is the default for social media, where you could have enhanced communication, but it's something different now.
Add in financial incentives, and its the worst aspects of manipulation (for all parties) of mass media.

I've been on a social media detox since November 2023, after feeling like I was having the worst time of my life throughout the entirety of 2023. I do use RUclips tho, but there's no real interaction going on here and I don't bite into the clickbait-y thumbnails or news headlines anymore either.
I can already feel my nerves coming under control because my brain just has to think about less now. A huge part of my day that I spent scrolling through other people's stories and trying to present myself in a likeable way to them is gone now. It was really tough at first, but now I almost feel relieved to be free from its clutches.
To anybody else struggling to put off social media, trust me when I say this but it really isn't worth it. There's no amount of rationalization that will make scrolling through snippets of other people's happy lives be justified. Don't set up a blocker like Cold Turkey or something. Steel your resolve, keep thinking about quitting, and one day you'll suddenly feel that fire. Wishing you all the best.

Not trying to make this social but there are extensions and mods for RUclips that replace clickbait, remove shorts, etc which may make it better for you (not saying it is bad to exercise the thought of purposely not clicking though)

I agree with you. I quitted using Instagram from end of 2022 and I'm trying to control my usage by using reddit in browser... I hardly want to interact nor I interact only when it's absolutely necessary for me to learn something better.... I've installed app blocks for RUclips for me stop coming back often as well... It's so damn good to be mentally off social media.... It works like a charm and I hope this message is spread out even more. And yes as the other person says, use Re-vanced.

The problem with authenticity is that we think that a Human being exists in a void, and it is separate from the society, and world, and that's wrong from the beginning, We always relate to other people or other objects." I " doesn't exists without others.

    • @kelechi_77
      @kelechi_77 4 месяца назад +16

Authenticity isn't "total" authenticity, to be authentic is just to not conform to what other people want you to be, and just do what you want to do. Like if everyone else likes one thing and you just happen to like it too, that's authenticity, but if everyone likes it and you don't, then don't switch your opinion, stick to what you believe

It isnt bad, if it doesnt affect your life negatively. Working out is fun. Shaping your body the way you want to is fun.

What OP means isn’t wearing a hairstyle or working out. They mean taking & regularly changing personas often something that doesn’t fully define that individual as people are complex, and displaying that visually in order to attain attention and validation both outside and online. This is something that only happens when you’re chronically online and let the internet dictate who you are instead of logging off and figuring it out on your own.
Changing aesthetics every 4 weeks while loading your Bio with “demi-pansexual GNC INFP Scorpio Moon Free Palestine” are absurd methods by Gen Z & Gen Alpha to bypass getting to know themselves and one another as people. It’s tragic.

Today I signed up for the SAT and took steps to have better hygiene because I struggle with that. I thank God

Instead of coolness, one of those factors should be showing the whole self, the good and the bad -- or at least the illusion of a whole true self. People don't always like to see cool perfect human beings. They like to see people shortcomings and flaws. It makes the social media relationship more relatable and personal. It makes them think they know the person behind the profile.

maybe it isn't the phones. maybe it's the fact that a lot of kids and adults do not have a "third space" to inhabit, such as a YMCA, a local garden, a skate park, etc. maybe if we all had a place to congregate outside of school, home, and work, then we might use our phones less.
