I like how Frieren(the story) has shown Fern getting along with all kinds of animals and then it kinda pays off here where she has no trouble catching the bird.
On top of the difficulties involved with capturing a Stille, there's a time limit and it's not clear if there were enough Stille for every group to pass - there's nineteen parties in total and Frieren's group only spotted three when they spent the entire first day on observation. Since Stille are basically impossible to track down using magic detection, finding other mages in the testing area and taking their Stille has higher odds of success within the few days the examinees have.
