Hey Scotty, I am a rav4 owner. 2023. The freaking screen keeps rebooting for no reason. Am also a broke dude, and they want a 400$ diagnosis. Can you look into this problem.
Or just purchase a Honda

So you are recommending a car that insurance companies are dropping policies on ,because of how easy they are to steal ? OK
Hi Scotty I have a 2016 Buick verano with 69k. It’s making growling sounds when slowing down, when going faster like 65-75 sound is better but slowing down gets louder. No codes found, can I send you live data from scanner to look at and possibly point me In right direction? I’m looking to trade in and want best trade value.
People always bought Toyotas because they were affordable, simple and reliable. They aren't any of those things anymore.
In America
Every new engine brought ought even by Toyota in the past had issues where Toyota made recalls and fixed the issues that eventually led to bulletproof engines which people think that they don't make anymore. So yeah, stop thinking and talking like Toyota doesn't care about what people want.
@@thejcubethe proof is on the pudding
My best friends whole Family buys Toyotas and Prays to them so I've got to see how they really are over past 30 years, Really are junk nothing special at all
Scotty is right, people want a car that lasts and runs. They need to get back to quality.
They make more money off things that need to be replaced. Thus why all this crappy cheap vehicles these days.
The new engines don’t even get that much better gas mileage from the prior engines 😂
Correct but they have way less emissions and that’s a huge part of the EPA mandate for the new standards going into affect for model year 2027
@jonathanratliff4780 but they can't tow.......
Not true. My 23 Tundra pulls 10k no problem. Towing capacity has very little to with engine power. V6 Tundra will drag a V8 Tundra like a ragdoll…. Reliably on the other hand…. I expect my Tundra to blow up every start up 😭
True on no better gas mileage. But my 2.4 Turbo Highlander is great. I live in a high speed area and taking left turns has caused a lot of T Bones. My 2.4 T flies across the road as soon as I touch the pedal. Much more responsive than the V6.

@@babypluto3746 👍You are correct.
I retired from a Toyota plant in the southern United States. Was there for 25 years. Worked in off-line repair for a couple of years. When you made a repair, you documented it on the computer, which tracked how often the same repair was made over time. Come to find out, once the computer counted a repair 'x' amount of times, it simply would stop counting them, making it appear the defect and repair weren't happening nearly as often as it actually was. Complaining about this to bosses was wasted breath. This is just ONE example of many.
I’m retired 25 years of supply chain parts for Toyota dealers. You remember when every day there was only talk of quality. Being the best.
Then quality got relegated to only being talked about monthly and then only when something went wrong. TPS is always preached but now never practiced.
@@harryclint6170 I completely agree.

Isn't Boeing also having a similar problem?
Naturally aspirated V8 is the answer 👍
Supercharged V8 👌
That’s why I am not getting rid of my 2000 tundra anytime soon 280,000 miles on my 4.7 L V8 still running like a clock might not be as fast as the new one, but it does not leave me on the side of the road. Frustrated. And I would not want a new truck payment anyway.
4Runners 2024 is the last year of the 4.0 L, next is 4 cylinder turbo crap.
Amen
Not many NA V8's beat the iforce 5.7.
The machining debris explanation sounds like a cop-out for poor design.
It almost worked for Hyundai lol
but its not a poor design, there are many 22+ high mileage tundras out there already
As prices go up quality goes down.
Used to be quality goes up the price goes up.
I’m in Lexington, KY ….near Toyota in Georgetown. They are losing the experienced workers to retirement and the new have little work ethic and pride in quality.
Makes sense quality dropping
Toyota Georgetown hired a couple of kids who graduated with my son. Not friends of his but he saw their posts on Facebook. Very dumb kids. I was shocked they were hired. One is a juvenile delinquent. Good luck, Toyota.
That's how the newer generations are....'entitled'....they think they should be given the 'check' first, and while they're spending it, give a little thought (or no thought) to actually doing real work to 'earn' that check.....Right now their attitude is 'let someone else do the work'......just 'give me the money'
Now 'here is somebody telling the truth.
All over North America, people are retiring because they got old.
I did 15 years ago. And things in main't. ( a large airline) went right downhill. People just work there. They don't 'care there'. We 'WERE' the airline, and proud of it and how we got things done!
sad eh?
It's a DESIGN problem....import fans always blaming American workers for a design flaw or subpar part material.
They need to get back to building them in Japan
Yes, but it's mostly about Toyota's embrace of lowest cost bidder manufacturing, just like the Americans
Even engines made in Japan had the same problems
The tundras were never built in Japan lmao
Chicken tax on pickups. Write your congressman to repeal it.
Plaza Accords.
The U.S. military use all diesel with no egr or def systems because they last and are more efficient, diesels can be clean and optimized with ecu tuning and in cars they get high mpg due to the power weight ratio being better than in heavy trucks. We need more here!!
Abolish the EPA
The military uses diesel not because they're better engines but because diesel doesn't blowup. Patton in WW2 complained about his tanks blowing and demanded the military switch from gasoline engines to diesel, to give the tank crews time to get out of a burning tank. After Patton got his way, the entire military started using diesel engines after WW2. Gasoline explodes, diesel doesn't.
@@RogueDemagogue I’ve thought they always used diesel with the exception of jeeps and Harley’s back in ww2
@@ItalianMetalHED Wasn't until the 1980's that the US military tackled the problem of 6-7 different fuel types used in different vehicles. The USMC got diesel tanks and the US Army still had gasoline tanks, lol. It's still a problem today, some 40 years later and 80 years since WW2. Today's military uses 3 types of jet fuel and diesel. When I was in the US Navy, we used JP5 jet fuel in our ship's engines, which of course, were 2 DC10 jet engines, lol. The military's attempt for a single fuel source failed.
@@RogueDemagogue oh the irony in them pushing for us to use one fuel source for us normies lol
I’ve been to Japan and seeing how high their customer service is, I know, they do not screw the customer over. They build products to last. If their overseas team can’t do the job right, maybe it’s best to make all their vehicles in Japan
in Thailand and Malaysia they also do that because they own the dealer. If engine or transmission fail they have to pay it that's why they change engine oil and CVT fluid at low mileage.
The motor failures affect motors made in USA and Japan.
Its not a location or staff issue. Its a manufacturing issue.
Funny. the Nissan Frontier seems to be doing remarkably well, made in USA. It's a TOYOTA issue, not a nationalism issue. When precious Toyota messes up, fanboys like to postulate that ALL manufacturers MUST have issues too. Not so.
Japan is cutting back its work force, you can see the lack of safety markings from inspectors in all their new vehicles made in Japan. After parts are made and assembled, an inspector comes by and marks that part with a magic marker, they used to have 2-3 inspectors for the same part, now just one. In case you ever wondered why tires would have 2-3 different color dots/marks on them and places under the hood. Each inspector would have a different color marker.
my 2018 V-8 Tundra becomes more valuable every day!
I prefer a truck/suv because our roads are falling apart.
Nope. The Bidens Infastracture Plan is working!😂
Everyone driving 5,000--6,000 pound Trucks and SUVs are the reason the roads are deteriorating so fast.
I'm not in love with SUVs but I ended up getting one for the same reasons.

Just traded in my 23 Tundra for a 24 Frontier and couldn’t be any happier 🎉
2025 Frontiers are way better, with more ground clearance than the Tacoma. Nissan listens to their customers and make changes each and every year. Unlike Toyota that had the 5th gen 4Runner in production for 16 years without change, lol.

You may worry-free, but you probably won't be "repair free". I hated the Subaru I bought my wife, but that was a while ago. Good luck.
Since when Subaru has great transmission?
My 2014 Highlander was great. My 2020 Highlander has been subject to several recalls, had issues with the gauges, alignment problems and a broken a/c. Certainly not the quality I expected from Toyota.

2014 was a great year for Toyotas
When they started with replacing my good 3.5ltr V6 Hybrid with a 4cyl or 4cyl Turbo i knew they make now the same mistake which others did years before ... WHY !!??? mine does have now over 320000km and runs smooth and i like its deep growl at low rpm a lot more than any new 4cyl crying baby
I can't believe, I live like 40 minutes away from scotty the best mechanic in the world
The push for smaller engines is because of our government agencies like the EPA. The only thing Toyota can control is their quality, and in sure they are capable of building a good turbocharged engine. They just need to maintain their quality
Nissan Frontiers still have the V6 naturally aspirated engines, and they said they won't replace them with turbos. the 2025 Frontier will have more ground clearance then the Tacoma.
It's not necessarily the size of the engine, but the efficiency of the engine. It's how you choose to control the unwanted emissions that is the key. So far engineers are using smaller engines with turbos in an attempt to lower unwanted emissions. Remember the pollution control devices in the 70's? The automotive engineers have to come up with better solutions. The EPA has historically pushed legislation that mandated less emissions & better gas mileage. Without those requirements we may be back in the good old days with cars going super fast, but polluting more as well. Ever hear of Global Warming? That what pollution does to the atmosphere - traps the heat that we are feeling now.
I noticed the plastic on the rear bumper on a new Toyota highlander flapping in the wind, when I passed on I90. It looks cheap.
People want a sporty car, but their money doesn't go as far these days, so priorities first.
Unless the sport car price like corolla.
@@GF-mf7ml Yeah, if they were someone affordable, like they used to be.
Yeah, main bearing failure can be a big problem. I do not want a turbocharged engine. I’d get a hybrid before a turbo.
I have a 2000 F350 Crewcab Dually with a 6.8l V10 and I get 11.3mpg while towing my 16k pound camper and I have pulled that camper with a brand new Ford 3.5 eco boost and Chevy 5.3l and both return 6 to 7 mpg. It just goes to show the efficiency of motors while not towing has gotten much better 24 mpg hwy but while towing it's still far worse than a vehicle specifically built to tow from 24 years ago an using a giant V10 returns an amazing 11.3mpg hwy making it extremely efficient while towing yet if your not towing it is extremely inefficient at 11.3mpg hwy unloaded. Makes me wonder if we strapped a modern 10 speed trans to an old V10 that it would not upset the industry with mpg numbers so much better than what we get now proving they make modern motors much less efficient on purpose as a result of the transmissions getting so much more efficient.
My 2022 Tacoma has 29000 miles and consume about a gallon of oil every month. Dealer refused to do anything.
Toyota’s now making my 2010 Land Rover look a keeper
We looked at a Lexus 2024 RX-350. Turbo 4 cylinder engine is all they offer and when you accelerate hard the engine is noisy and course. Hardly a luxury car level engine. Needless to say we didn’t buy it
I have a 2011 Chevrolet Colorado with a 3.7 L inline 5-cylinder engine and it's still running great. Recently, I had to rent a 2023 Toyota RAV4 for about 2 weeks in the 2023 Toyota died on me in the parking lot at 6:00 in the morning. All the electronic crap drained the battery. I'm glad I'm back to my 2011 truck which is high quality.
Yeah...I heard that engine lasts forever.... many good American engines...hard to break the brainwashing of the import fans...
So . . . I put a set of Akebono Ceramic Brake pads on my 2015 Tacoma. I have never had brakes squeak until now. I am 70 years old and I have never paid to have a brake job, but this is the first time I have created a squeaker. They brake quietly until the pickup is almost stopped. The nice thing is the my Standard Poodle knows when I am home from work. He hears me from over 500 feet away before I drive up the driveway. :-)
Wait.....the former sumo yokozuna got into brake pads after he retired?

Toyota started slipping when they decided to pursue being #1 in sales. That was in the late 90's but you probably didn't notice cause most the others were making way worse, LOL.
2025 Nissan Frontier is looking damn good.
I've owned a few Toyotas over the years, and they have always put customers first. They are the only manufacturer I have dealt with that did. Imagine a manufacturer who pays for a repair on a vehicle with close to 100,000 miles on the odometer. They covered the cost to get a stripped exhaust manifold stud repaired with a Heli Coil and a new exhaust manifold. I didn't even have to ask for the repair. I went to the dealer to get an idea of how difficult it would be for me to do the repair and the service manager took care of everything. It was a $650 repair.
They repainted my 4runner after 10 yeas because of a paint chips. It was part of a recall. But they recalled Toyotas because of small paint chips that didn't show up until 5-10 years into ownership.
I had a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 100,000 miles on it when the engine went out on it. Hyundai replaced the engine for free because it was a known problem. I would still be driving that car today if it wasn’t for an unavoidable accident… so I bought another Hyundai… they also treat customers right in my experience
My other vehicle is a 2012 Tundra that I’m not getting rid of 😬
Not the case anymore.
@@shdw6662 Sadly, that seems to be true. I had hoped my last vehicle purchase would be a new vehicle, but it will probably be a used one based on reviews I have seen. And the recall did not include them because it is not a safety issue.

Same issue as the hyundais. Too bad. Basic normally aspirated V6 was bullet proof. A shame
Your comment “Toyota needs to get back to their old way” sums it up. They got greedy and are trying to really stick to their customers by offering higher prices and lower quality. Sad but they’re probably about on par with the domestics now unfortunately.
i bought those brake pads and they still squeaked. then i had a mechanic put on new discs and pads that they supplied, because that's the only way i could get a guarantee of no squeak. They still squeak! I wonder if there could be a caliper problem doing it?

Now grab the wheel from the 12 and 6 o'clock positions this will determine if your wheel hub bearing assembly or lower control arms are going out. Toyota and Honda had a chance to completely take over market share by staying the course and building good, reliable cars like always while all the others built even crappier junk. But they lost their way. A real shame.
There is a guidance that went into effect recently that is requesting companies to emit less emissions so manufacturers are much obligated to make smaller engines that perfom like a better engine. In the case of highlander 2022, it wss the last year they use v6. Now come to 2023, you will find a 4 cylinder turbo.
The engineers took the easy way out as well. Hybrid technology will get to the point where they will overtake the sale of gasoline engines. It's like having cars with carburetors - who's making one now? Were they efficient?
Thanks Scotty for telling us about this. Maybe you can influence people not to buy them until they get the problems fixed.

My 2021 tundra is the last of the Toyota reliable engines.
If Toyota's engine problems revolves around not properly cleaning out the machineing debris from the engine during assembly, what difference does it make which engine line we're talking about? They don't have the problem with the Atkinson cycle engines but they do with the others? It seems to me that any engine manufacturer is going to have to clean out debris from the machining process regardless. So what are the other engine assembly lines doing that is escaping the twin turbo V6 assembly line? It makes no sense.
I went through service records for my 2002 Tacoma Double Cab V6. The valves have never been adjusted and the fuel filter has never been replaced. It has over 78,000 miles on the odometer and the dealer that sold it has done all the maintenance. I'm surprised they never suggested a valve adjustment. I've adjusted valves on 4cyl engines before, but never the shim in bucket style Toyota uses. I’ve owned 3 Corollas and a Toyota pickup decades ago. Loved them. Basic, simple, reliable, Cost Effective. Currently have a sweet Frontier Pro4x and a collector Chevy Tahoe. Also reliable, normally aspirated, proven.
They should have kept the V8!!!!!!
I wonder if that crossed their mind?
Yup let the consumer have the option between v8 or twin turbo.
This is more the government's fault than Toyota's. If not for government mandates, we would still have the indestructibles - Ford V8 460, Chrysler IL6 4.0, and Toyota V8 5.7. All gas hogs, but, at least, they were dependable.
Excuse
@@illumination357 Excuse what? Did you fart?
Right on ! 92 Ford-460 350, plow truck-crane-weld equipment hauling, rolled over 200 K so far.
Nissan said they'll never put a turbo in their trucks.
Yeah Toyota can't be wrong. They are not just as good anymore period.
It makes sense because SUV’s are practical! You have more space can do more things, awd. Sports coupe are the opposite. Unless you have a sports car as a toy, and not everyone can afford that option. I have a Mustang gt and I can’t even have my 3 kids ride in the back, it sits 2 and there’s literally no leg space. So I have a sequoia for the family and the Mustang as a weekend toy!
Scotty your unbiased opinion of electric vehicles is stunning and brave.
Toyotas been “touched” by the Hyundai magic 😂
Ha ha😂😂😂
Yup keeping my 3rd gen tacoma with the v6 for sure!
Same here. 😂
Yep! Will never sale it for the 4th gen.
I did a check on Autotrader yesterday, you can still find them with 0-10 miles on them. (2023 Tacoma's, brand new)
I was looking to upgrade to a new Tundra or Lexus GX, due to the engine problems I'll just keep rolling with my 2003 Tundra SR5 V8, Thanks to Scotty/ RUclips I found out how to replace timing belt/ fixed the speed sensor on my tranny. That is a solid truck I got from auction with hail damage in 2010. 😁
Here in Canada small cars are making a comeback because people can't afford any of the trucks....
I love my V6 on my Highlander now they go to a 4 cylinder in the highlander! Ugh
4Runner too in 2025.
The most eco-friendly vehicle is one that stays on the road, does not get junked due to failure or being mechanically totaled, and thus does not need to be replaced by a brand-new vehicle. Companies that truly cared about the environment would produce the longest-lasting vehicles they can.
Well the first part of this is actually quite simple in that if an engine needs one let alone two turbos attached to give it enough power to do something it is an under sized engine for the application. Second part involves way to much electronic "whiz bang" as well as then to much complication. Naturally Aspirated has been and still needs to be the theme.
Under no circumstances and in no way will these engines with dual turbos and/or a turbo in general last more than maybe 150,000 miles max before they are junk unless they are so lighlty used what is the point?
The mistake made was not in manufacturing and/or quality control - it was in thinking that twin turbos would ever work or last in any way long term i.e. can we say planned failure? Greed? Short term thinking? 🤔🤨🤔🤨🤐🤐
Good to see that Subaru swings both ways....
That’s why I own a 2014 Toyota tundra with the 5.7
@WangOChon really?
@WangOChon I was hoping it was made over seas so it would last longer lol
Made in Texas. I got a 14 Tundra w. 5.7 and love it. No issues. 135000 miles
@@robertrogers2990 210,000 miles on mine
I will walk before I buy anything with a turbo CRAP
2025 Nissan Frontier.
This is why i bought a 2021 toyota v6 before its gone
Lookout Scotty, them fanboys will come for you! 😬 😂
Scotty Kilmer for President
I don’t care what anyone says… I’m still sticking with Toyota 💯
check out the 2025 Frontiers.
Go down with the ship Captain! Any sharks in the water? What's going to happen to the owners of these Tundras? Brand new engine, rebuilt engine, buy-back? How long will they have to wait for repairs? How much do these trucks cost?
So in other words your "stuck" with it 🥴
Heeelooouu! im from gubbermint and are here to help YOUUUU!
High schools should bring back auto shop class.
My 2022 Highlander the transmission went out at 58000 miles I'm so lucky it was under warranty if not It would have cost me 7 Grand
Toyota must get it right fast.
Cafe. Write your congressman to repeal it
They will not. Capitalism's fault.
@@jimmytimmy3680no environmentalist fault
Ford's fault for divorcing Mazda.
Bought a Honda on Scott's advise. Regretted it instantly. Bad paint jobs, bad electronics, older technology that is finicky, and super suspension and driving experience. Never again, so brought a Ford, and recalls were a normal thing. Then, he shifted to carolla and loved its reliability and intutive operation.
Akebono brake pads are among the best.
