      A mechanical fan is really good insurance if you’re driving the car hard, I think speed academy went to a mechanical fan (from electric) when the s14 was sr powered for that reason.

    Pretty cool you are doing an E46 M3, with the amount of work you are doing it is going to be sweet when finished. I think you mentioned in the video you will not be replacing the rod bearings. With the amount of work you are doing already including pulling then engine, for the money and peace of mind, it is probably a good idea to just do it. It is money and time well spent, especially since as a comparison you have already added a carbon fibre hood!! Great video series, looking forward to the next one!

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 6 лет назад +5

      We'll definitely check them and replace them if need be (we suspect they've already been done).

    • @Doggepp
      @Doggepp 6 лет назад +5

      @@speedacademydave I wouldnt even trust it if they had been changed. Even if they're the facelift bearings, they are prone to fail. I believe VAC Motorsport has designed a bearing which essentially lets you "forget" about the rod bearing issue. I would 100% do that upgrade, its a no brainer.

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 6 лет назад +2

      @@Doggepp good to know, we'll look into the VAC bearings! Thanks for the insight.

    • @Doggepp
      @Doggepp 6 лет назад

      @@speedacademydave No problem. The bearings and the frame cracking is two major issues with the E46. It doesnt really matter what the oil analysys says. If you drive it hard, they WILL 100% fail. And regarding the cracking of the body/frame - There's a fix by a swedish guy called Vince. He has spent massive ammounts of time researching the body of the E46, its weak points, and how to fix it. If you search for "Practical Performance RnD" on Facebook, you'll see his solution, and also be able to purchase his plates to weld to the underside, as well as his chassis strengthening bar for the body. If you will drive the car hard, its a must. Im not sure it fits a convertible though.

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 6 лет назад

      @@Doggepp we actually have a rear subframe/body reinforcement kit already, from VAC I think. Should be a fun job. Will definitley check out Practical Performance RnD though and see what we can learn there. Thanks again for the insights.

  • @AndyPilot
    @AndyPilot 6 лет назад

    Good Job Gents! Get a quote form BMW for the reds and blues, the bearing shells aren't that expensive with some discount. Just add the rod bolts and sump gasket and you have total peace of mind motoring! I'm sure you have a torque wrench as the torque settings are both nm and angle torque but other than that its a straight forward job. You will add value to your car knowing its done and for future resale. It's a win win

    Can you guys do suspension comparison? Start with a basically stock car in good condition. Set some lap times. Swap on a set of decent lowering springs. Lap it. Swap out struts. Set lap times. Swap in coilovers. Set some lap times. If you wanna get frisky, try different brands of each component you swap. We poor people want the handles but can’t afford the coils. I can buy several track days and build skill for the difference between lowering springs and coilovers

    Best way to drain the coolant is to remove the coolant sensor and let it drain out since it's at one of the lowest points of the system. The weird thing on the bottom of the pan is actually for the oil level sensor. Enjoyed watching you take it apart as I just did the exact same thing to mine recently and ran into some of the same problems 😀

    That oil drain bolt is only supposed to be about 25nm. They’re really easy to strip threads out of so be careful when you’re putting that bolt back in. If you can’t put it all the way in by hand it’s already stripped threads. Also, you can use traditional 6 point sockets on e torx if you’re careful. I’ve done it before, but of course a correct socket is always the best answer.

    I really don't know if everything is so different on US / Canada models or if you are just not used to the BMW setup.
    But... you can remove the whole bumper with the crash bar together very easily (go straight to the 2 massive screws). Never had that issue with the washer fluid reservoir, but that could be a M3 specificity
    The headlight are super easy to remove. Couple screws with easy access on top, and connectors to detach it from the ballast
    There is a drain on the radiator. If none, might not be a BMW one. I never made any kind of mess when changing the liquid.
    Agreed for the overall lack of clearance for many bolts...but cutting the bolts for the exhaust? You can sneak a small wrench! Takes an additional 15min

    Great to see you doing an M3. MOOSE! I don't see why you thought you needed to pull the whole car apart. I think you could do the Black stone test Check the computer and inspect the suspension, brakes etc. Then do the Vano's if it hasn't already been done. Which it might already have been as they usually need new Cam bolts by around the 70,000km mark and that's when most people do the whole Vano's upgrade. If the black stone comes back saying there's a rod bearing problem. Which it shouldn't as there was a 2003 recall for all S54's Rod Bearings and the BMW dealer did it for free, then after that they used the correct rod bearings so no problems. Then SUBFRAME! YEA! I've done all this for mine and it's now rock solid. But I'll enjoy you doing it anyway thanks guys!
