Always good to see Moose back.
I've missed him like a 10mm socket.
Don't use the clutch fan setup. Just convert to a spal electric setup to prevent issues in the future. Will also free up some power.
I can confirm this!
Good mod..Revs up better AND gives a little more power too..They need to do headers and exhaust also..
A mechanical fan is really good insurance if you’re driving the car hard, I think speed academy went to a mechanical fan (from electric) when the s14 was sr powered for that reason.
Love this channel. Also, Moose looks like if Canada was a person. Dudes a beast!!!!!!!!!!
You guys made all that look waaay easier than you were conplaining about! Bravo!!
I love a good Canadian car channel! From Vancouver so nice to see some good ole Canadians work hard ;)
Thanks Alex! Hope you had a Merry Christmas, eh :D
Pretty cool you are doing an E46 M3, with the amount of work you are doing it is going to be sweet when finished. I think you mentioned in the video you will not be replacing the rod bearings. With the amount of work you are doing already including pulling then engine, for the money and peace of mind, it is probably a good idea to just do it. It is money and time well spent, especially since as a comparison you have already added a carbon fibre hood!! Great video series, looking forward to the next one!
We'll definitely check them and replace them if need be (we suspect they've already been done).
@@speedacademydave I wouldnt even trust it if they had been changed. Even if they're the facelift bearings, they are prone to fail. I believe VAC Motorsport has designed a bearing which essentially lets you "forget" about the rod bearing issue. I would 100% do that upgrade, its a no brainer.
@@Doggepp good to know, we'll look into the VAC bearings! Thanks for the insight.
@@speedacademydave No problem. The bearings and the frame cracking is two major issues with the E46. It doesnt really matter what the oil analysys says. If you drive it hard, they WILL 100% fail. And regarding the cracking of the body/frame - There's a fix by a swedish guy called Vince. He has spent massive ammounts of time researching the body of the E46, its weak points, and how to fix it. If you search for "Practical Performance RnD" on Facebook, you'll see his solution, and also be able to purchase his plates to weld to the underside, as well as his chassis strengthening bar for the body. If you will drive the car hard, its a must. Im not sure it fits a convertible though.
@@Doggepp we actually have a rear subframe/body reinforcement kit already, from VAC I think. Should be a fun job. Will definitley check out Practical Performance RnD though and see what we can learn there. Thanks again for the insights.
Good Job Gents! Get a quote form BMW for the reds and blues, the bearing shells aren't that expensive with some discount. Just add the rod bolts and sump gasket and you have total peace of mind motoring! I'm sure you have a torque wrench as the torque settings are both nm and angle torque but other than that its a straight forward job. You will add value to your car knowing its done and for future resale. It's a win win
Your “Why you should buy a JDM car” video just got a lot more relevant and funnier lol! But I love all the work you’re putting into saving this lovely beamer
Can you guys do suspension comparison? Start with a basically stock car in good condition. Set some lap times. Swap on a set of decent lowering springs. Lap it. Swap out struts. Set lap times. Swap in coilovers. Set some lap times. If you wanna get frisky, try different brands of each component you swap. We poor people want the handles but can’t afford the coils. I can buy several track days and build skill for the difference between lowering springs and coilovers
Best way to drain the coolant is to remove the coolant sensor and let it drain out since it's at one of the lowest points of the system. The weird thing on the bottom of the pan is actually for the oil level sensor. Enjoyed watching you take it apart as I just did the exact same thing to mine recently and ran into some of the same problems 😀
That song you guys used is perfect either Moose haha I love it! Glad to see moose back!
Moose lookin better than ever, always good to have friends like that.
Love it that you are going really in depth with this build!
LOL at the moose shirt and holy crap all those cars in the background! Good vid as always gents
That oil drain bolt is only supposed to be about 25nm. They’re really easy to strip threads out of so be careful when you’re putting that bolt back in. If you can’t put it all the way in by hand it’s already stripped threads. Also, you can use traditional 6 point sockets on e torx if you’re careful. I’ve done it before, but of course a correct socket is always the best answer.
I use Blackstone-labs too👍 to check the condition of my race Mini😀
i just checked out your mini. that fastest car of the day video was awesome i could tell how much you were haulin ass! makes me long for my 04 i had years ago
Varg Sutton thanks it is a lot of fun!!!
I'm happy to hear you guys having the same complaints I do whenever I touch a Europian car lol
Moose always deserves a thumbs up.
Time for the K46 project!
Very "Amoosing" to watch! Can't wait to see the cars in action.
Easy thumbs up with Moose content!
the ballast of the headlight it suppose to be under the headlight assembly
Vanos and rod bearings is a must Forsure
Pumped! Enjoying this series
As an 18 year owner of an e36 these guys are ill prepared for what's coming...
It's like they have no idea.
actually the complete front end comes off as one part with radiator
'Oh man...that IS the most german plug in the world...' made my day. But I tend to break plugs with a screwdriver, or smash my hands pulling 'em off. Pulling Plugs is the worst!
Greetings from Germany
Moose in a moose shirt. Winning.
thank you speed academy.. happy holidays!!!! looking forward to rotary content of course!!!!!! you guys are awesome
The coolant should've been blue when draining. Also, I would highly recommend doing rod bearings.
Moose is back! Yay!
9:01 I love a good pun!
Tribologik is also another company that does elemental spectroscopy and other sampling avenues. And their a Canadian company.
Oh how I miss a good cup of Timmy's coffee in the morning... I'll take one with or without 5W40
Good to see the moose!!!
The oil pan access port on VW is for an oil strainer.
My thoughts too
@@ianm432 we might have to crack it open, just to find out what mysteries it hides...
Great stuff! Love the projects!
Thumbs-up for Moose!
I really don't know if everything is so different on US / Canada models or if you are just not used to the BMW setup.
But... you can remove the whole bumper with the crash bar together very easily (go straight to the 2 massive screws). Never had that issue with the washer fluid reservoir, but that could be a M3 specificity
The headlight are super easy to remove. Couple screws with easy access on top, and connectors to detach it from the ballast
There is a drain on the radiator. If none, might not be a BMW one. I never made any kind of mess when changing the liquid.
Agreed for the overall lack of clearance for many bolts...but cutting the bolts for the exhaust? You can sneak a small wrench! Takes an additional 15min
You might want to do the CPV valve
Goddamn I love E46 M3’s
'Its not coming DP'
'Need more lube' 😂
Great to see you doing an M3. MOOSE! I don't see why you thought you needed to pull the whole car apart. I think you could do the Black stone test Check the computer and inspect the suspension, brakes etc. Then do the Vano's if it hasn't already been done. Which it might already have been as they usually need new Cam bolts by around the 70,000km mark and that's when most people do the whole Vano's upgrade. If the black stone comes back saying there's a rod bearing problem. Which it shouldn't as there was a 2003 recall for all S54's Rod Bearings and the BMW dealer did it for free, then after that they used the correct rod bearings so no problems. Then SUBFRAME! YEA! I've done all this for mine and it's now rock solid. But I'll enjoy you doing it anyway thanks guys!
Moose is in. Instant like 👍🏼
Oh and can you please share what music is playing at around the 10min mark? absolutely love it!
Working on German cars can be summed up with 2 phrases. "You need this special tool" and " why did they design it like that"
As soon as you said Dexter style murder scene, I thought of Moose, and then there he was!
Yes the Moose!
“It’s not coming DP. You need the looob”
Coming together nicely. Now I see why people dislike working on German cars 😅
BMWs are easy to work on. They’re just intimidating to learn. You can use traditional 6 point sockets on the E torx bolts and be just fine.
Saw moose, instantly liked! :)
When I saw moose, I knew this was gonna be a good video..
That access port on the bottom of the oil pan looks like it's from an aircooled Volkswagen engine lol
Lol I scrolled a ways just to make sure I didn't repeat this comment! Looks exactly the same!
0:30 is that a Corvette in the background?
Love the work so far on the BMW. Will you go for upgraded exhaust?
You guys are pulling the engine without doing rod bearings?
We'll definitely check them and do them if required but we think they've been done already.
@@speedacademydave That would be nice! If not, it's really not hard when the engine is out the car. We deal with these S54s non-stop and do rod bearings at least once a week. Seen plenty done badly by other shops/owners too so check carefully!
@@hackengineering401 any advice or online resources you can point us to when checking the bearings?
@@speedacademydave email me on info@hackengineering.co.uk, happy to help you guys out
@@hackengineering401 will do, thanks!
OMG, I want an "Easily Amoosed" shirt....
Motor Monster Moose returns to teach this BMW who's boss, like the stallion breakers of old! Except in this case, the steed will be *less* tame! Skiiiiiirt! 🚗💨💨💨✌😎
Great to see more repairs and progress on auch fine vehicle. Any chance we'll get more footage on the e36 m3 euro spec seems like its disappeared again or Vanos must be dodgy again 😂😂
I wonder if Blackstone can detect the wax coating on the Tim Hortons cup
Nice!!
Really enjoyed it. ..but not the ding ding music....lol
The radiator has a plastic drain nut on the bottom of it - you obviously just missed it.
That why i love honda so much lol
Is it possible to leave the A/C system intact, just unbolted and moved to the side after removing the front end? I was undergoing a head gasket replacement, when inspecting my block closer after the head was removed, it might be cracked! Resorted to pulling the motor out, but the A/C is still charged and I'd hate to get her towed just to discharge the A/C system at a shop (ontop of recharge, etc). Thanks, and amazing video on the S54!!
I recall thinking Id like to keep the ac intact but dont recall why but I think it was the condensor lines that I couldnt work my way around?
The Moose is Loose!!!
Since Toyota brought back the Supra but with a Z4 engine, you guys should put a 2JZ in Z4.
that upper e torx bolt on the exhaust is a bitch even when new...
Trying to unplug those connectors and washer jets would be so much easier if you took your gloves off.
Don't leave the muffler off, just get one made or buy one. It will burn your rear bumper! happened to me.
Whats the track id @ 10:11 ?
Using a impact gun to slacken a Ali drain plug from a Ali sump, smart
Looks more like a John Kramer game from “Saw” Lol jk you guys rock
What is that second car from the left under the cover? NSX?
That's our buddy Dov's C6 Z06.
Where can i get that moose shirt?
Where can I get Moose's amoosing T-shirt??
Lol I had my complete front end off in about 10 minutes.
Song at 10:10 please?
OK so I have to give you a hard time about putting cardboard down in the shop....it’s a shop, get to work! That push broom will clean the mess with minimal effort. OK I’m done. Great channel gents, I really enjoy your builds.....OK maybe a little more, seeing your struggles with this M gives me flashbacks to trying to figure out my long gone W8 VW. Why can’t they let it be simple?
When ladies see Moose! 7:07 - 7:12
Most Canadian part of the video: old oil into a Tim Horton's cup.
where can i get Moose's shirt?
I see moose, I hit like
I got to get me a moose in my garage
I hate Torx. I mean they are ok in a perfect world... But when there is a little rust on them you sometimes just round them off and then you are fucked. If so, you can punch an old Allen wrench in there as a last-ditch effort. That works sometimes.
Hex bolts are the real MVPs.
Moose meme time!
Good vid, but sorry, that's ding ding ding ding music is really quite distracting...
@Alex It's the last ".. ding" that makes it
why would you not to the rod bearings when the motor is out of the car? 2001's were notorious for rod bearing failures.
We're definitely going to check them, but we suspect they've been done already.
MOOOOOOOOOOSE
You guys realize you can just drop the whole engine out the bottom right?
And if you think that's a rusty car you should see UK cars. Proper tossboxes
Now do this after i sold my e46 m ...
yaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssss moooooooooooooooooossssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Will you guys buy a Porsche 997 Carrera S and do this same type of disassembly and build? My 911 is getting up there in miles and there aren’t a lot of videos on RUclips for do-it-yourselfers.
Loose the bitch mitts!!!😂😂😂 I cant work with gloves!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Could you guys please credit the music!?
Fix that vanos and rod bearings.
Front end few bolts all comes togev radiator core support NEIN NEIN NEIN
My god i wanted an m3 until i saw this video. I dont have the patience or tools to work on that shit
German engineering at their finest ahahahahaha
