I like these 2nd hand reviews. You can review the latest £20,000 super bikes till the cows come home but reality is only 1% of the viewers could ever actually afford that. this is much more useful and interesting.
More of these reviews would be great. There's so many bikes out there that are great bikes at reasonable money, not everybody can afford brand new ducati's, Bmw's, ktm's, aprillia' s etc I bought my mt09 tracer based on your review and what a great bike it was
More of these videos of older bikes please. I've got an old FJ1200 from 1988 that I use in the winter which costed me £800 about 4 years ago. Those old FJs were incredibly well built.
My FZ1 ‘07 is about to hit 100k miles and I love it! I picked it up for $2500. It’s the ϟ version but as soon as the weather clears up a bit I’m doing the naked conversion. The ϟ looks good but the n is badass. I’m a big guy so aside from all the performance bolt ons I have some renthal Street fighter handlebars which are a little wider and taller and it’s soo comfortable.
1st gens are the best. In '06 they got some nice updates, especially the fork and fuel injection, but the tank holds a gallon less of fuel. The bars went an inch lower and it lost the nice underseat storage. But it's still better than the new ones. The current trend of no front wind protection with a just a tiny little headlight is bizarre.
@@westondifranco9313 I now have a Penske 8975 street shock, had the forks revalved/sprung at Traxxion, raised the forks 12mm, rotated the bars about an inch back from the stock position because the reach was a little too long and I've run faster lap times at my track than on any super sport I ever had. You'll have to pry my '03 from my cold, dead fingers. I'm probably going to buy another 1st gen this winter just to have it.
@@michaele5173 Yamaha really got it right on their first try. I wish it was fuel injected and had upside down forks. But as it sits the standard suspension is more than enough.
Nah, the second gen is far superior. I have a touring screen and ϟ fairing for winter and naked front end for summer so problem solved there for protection, and storage? I got a top case; not only is it *real* storage, but it makes me so much less “flashy” to cops vs a streetbike/super sport.

My 1st bike! Bought it in 2011, 8k on it for 4000. Opened the air box, cut off cats, yoshi, filter, added a chin spoiler and rear seat cap. It was fantastic. 147 hp to the wheel. Rode her 20k. Sold 4 yrs. Later for 3900. Best value out there. An incredible machine. Bulletproof is an understatement. Moved on to a zx14r but I still miss that little bike. So smooth and reliable. Fast, agile, and wheelie heaven. The greatest 1st bike experience a man can have.
Selling my first gen Fz1 tommorow to snag a busa, does the riding position of the zx14r ever make you miss the 'sit up straight' naked bikes? I do weekend trips with my girl and im just hoping the more crouched up position won't be too much that it'll take away from the joy of laying down miles..

Grab a slightly higher screen and bar risers 200$ investment. Best money ever spent. Do 100 on the hwy. without turbulence. Fairingless bikes are great at what they're for, bopping around town. They were called "barhoppers" for a reason. The busa, my girl has 1, has totally different ergonomics than the 14. Much more leaned forward on your hands and wrists. Her bike is cool but not comfortable. Not like the 14.

Sold the Fz1 last weekend and I'm going to check out some busa's this Saturday, one of those bikes I feel like you just need to own in your lifetime. I sold a MT-10, went travelling for a few month and ending up getting a 2009 FZ1. It had most of the accessories on it, eg, pipe, powercommander, Performance filter, Oggie knobs, Rear sets, bits and bobs, overall in excellent condition for just under 6k Australian on the road. That's a lot of bike for not a lot of money. I've adjusted the suspension and put a Woolich custom map and dyno tuned it. These bikes are so good for there age, very fast, very agile, Good front brake, rear might be a bit soft, better front light than most new bikes and not far behind an MT-10. The FZ1 has the same top speed,170mph, 10kgs heavier, around 10 h/p less and about the same for the torque figure from factory. The FZ1 isn't a MT-10, not an in line four, it is however a lot of good fun Supernaked.
Wozza! Mate loved watching your MT vids! Never pulled the trigger on the woolich tune for my MT as it's soooooo expensive! Which has lead me to look at the FZ as I want to be able to track my bike as well as commute etc, but I'm not allowed to have 2 bikes. MT is too valuable to risk dropping it on the track. Wish we had track insurance here in Oz! So can you tell me, does the FZ feel close to the MT 0-100km? Or nowhere near?
@@perryburns6515 The FZ is close. It is 10kg heavier, 10hp less aprox 10 torque less on a longer wheel base, fuel range about the same. Doesn't come alive till about 4500rpm then goes like a scolded cat. Handling is more stable, less wheely prone. I tuned the suspension and did the Woolich tune to get the bike to come alive lower down in the rpm range. The bike has no adds so rider input is more important, correct tyre pressure and good tyres make it a fun track bike. At Morgan park track the bike hits the finish line at 210klm, the MT-10, 220klms, no sprocket upgrades. I've been really impressed with the FZ, it has made me a better rider. So the short answer is with the race tune it sits between the MT10, MT09 and is a heck of alot of bang for buck. Cheers, Wozza.
I just picked one up today and I am very impressed with how well rider friendly the bike is while also providing great power and shortness I am looking forward to many great miles on the bike.
Exactly right, I have owned my FZ1 S new since 2007, have done 30000 km on it hassle free, still looks contempory, 150hp, 200kg, 156kmh in first gear, stock standard, great commuter.
Great to see,I am the original owner of a 2001 ,Ivans carb tuning, air pump delete and a Leo Vince can,the motor definetly out does my tuned 2009 speed triple. I have known a number of people that would search for the early version
Had an 09 model and it really flys. You can just cruise at 120mph if you want. Not a bike you want on the track, no clearance. Required mods: seat mod, rear shock, double bubble windscreen. After that you are golden... great value for the money... reliable +17k miles not one issue...

I just picked up a 2007 FZ1 with only 3,000 miles on it. After only a couple of rides I'm in love with the bike! It is a great machine, wish I had found one years ago.
i own the same bike, fz1 2006, red with 28Kkm. I am probably the same age as Mat. I love my bike and cannot sale it. Its too much fun to ride .It has been so reliable with basic maintenance jobs. The 14 year old performance, still surprises other riders with modern machines. No ABS nor ETC , no riding modes; its just you and 150hp. Cannot beat that.
Hay Mate Paul from the Land of Aus its fantastic that you review older bikes one of my mates has a Fazer and loves it. I have brought my fair share of new bikes over the years and have come to a conclusion " just because they say its the latest and the greatest it isn't " In the last 6 years I have owned a Triumph 955i & 800 Tiger , Aprillia 650 pegaso, Tiger 1050 Sport, Ducati 800 Scrambler . Currently a Benelli 1130 Trek , SWM 650 Superdual and Yamaha TDM 900. The TDM was brought second hand as I always wanted one and got it with other 20,000kms and its a 2012 model. I picked it up for nicks and LOVE IT , handles pretty good ( not quite as good as the Benelli - its probably the best handling bike I have ever owned ) but its no bad , its comfy , its fantastic fuel economy ( around 400kms on a 20lt tank -with normal riding ) easy to service and most of all Reliable. Would be great if you stared doing reviews on some older but great bikes. I'm over throwing money away on new bikes now ( but admit its still VERY temping like the V85 Moto Guzzi, . Yamaha T7, etc ) but will now put money towards BIG bike trips away.
Had a ‘06 in Liquid Silver, looked great, went great particularly after I had the throttle response problem addressed, I put an Arrow slip on on mine that deleted the exhaust valve, man that thing sounded angry, best sounding four cylinder I’ve heard after the Cross Plane R1’s with Akra pipes.
No need for a power commander to remove the hesitation, the throttle position sensor (tps) can be adjusted manually by hand and using the on board diagnostic mode built in to the clocks. I've done a few minor modifications to my own, gearing and exhaust etc but I have to say, the best modification I've done to it is changing the standard throttle cables to the domino quick action. Love this bike
That's why I bought my Naked FZ1 for a litre class bike with high performance nothing else came close to its price, when the time comes to replacing it I'd have to effectively downgrade in power at least as nothing with the same amount now is anywhere near the price
Few months ago I bought my 2007 FZ1. Only 36.000 kms for Eur4700. So much fun on this motorcycle. I just love It. Its gonna he with me for a lot of years.
Had a Fazer Thou for two years, did everything on it - superbike school, touring to GPs two up and daily commuting. Uprated the rear spring, had the forks revalved and dumped the ME-Z4 stock tyres for Pirelli Corsas - different bike. Great value for money.
Came back and saw this short vid because of the FZ1S! Given good memories for missus n me, kids too when I had to give a quick run to school. Trusty, but as with all Yamahas, they tend to get a little hot and thats where its a turn off. Raided Thailand n Malaysia for 2 yrs on it before traded in for a CRF1000L. 👍
@@brandonvaccaro2960 I love both of them. My FZS was getting high milage so it was time to get something new and 2nd gen was logical step forward. I feel that lower revs torque is better in 1st gen and cruising is smoother. 2nd gen requires higher revs for everything. My only complaint with 2nd gen would be fuel economy and tank size. You need to re-fuel about 100km earlier.
@@Nick-dz4ml with the new one I usually refuel around 230km when the fuel gauge makes me nervous about running out of fuel :) and then it takes in about 14L. If I recall correctly I used to refuel the old one in 320km. The fuel consumption with the old one was about 5,2L/100km and with new one 6,1L/100km
A new bike for me, will never happen. I don’t have the money for it and if I did, I don’t want to spend that much on a bike. Therefore these second hand tests for me are ideal. Keep it up. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
I had bought a '06 fz6s with 80 000 km on the clock the motor had never been split apart from timing chain replacement and and valve adjustments superb motorcycles the bike died at 139 000km as it t-boned a vw golf had it not been for the pesky golf I'm sure it would have gone on to live Much longer
Yesterday I drove one! What a wonderful wonderful bike. Carburetors, people don't like it, but I prefer them to a jerky trothle of new bikes. I can honestly say, FZS1000 is the best jack of all trades I've ever came a cross.
@@andrewbozhozr very cool, and I agree! And the carb version of the FZ1 has a 1 US gallon larger gas tank and gets better MPG than the 2006+ version. I think it's the better of the 2 versions, though I'm obviously biased :p
Enjoyed this. I have a 2012 fz1 Fazer and love it, it's an incredibly underrated bike. Mine's just ticked over 27000 miles, doesn't miss a beat. I use it in all weather's and for all riding. I've test ridden a lot of new bikes and none of them justify their price tag imo, they're really not that much better than my fz1. I would like to see Yamaha make a fully faired MT10 though... don't really understand why they haven't, it would be able to compete with the Kawasaki S1000sx (or Ninja sx as it is now).
42000 miles and stock yamaha stator crapped out on me. Starter relay replaced. Breaks, tires, oil and well nothing else that I can think of. Very good motorcycle. I'd take a 2015 but only if it was free. Good explanation of good bike. Needed niche the older bike reviews 👍
I own a FZ1 N 2008. Its an awesome ride but if your in the market for one be a bit careful. The 2006 and early 2007 models have some problems with frame cracking. And what ever second gen you buy, change the rotor for the alternator to the new one and thank me later.
The first gen FZ1 is still one of my all time favorite bike. Unfortunately Yamaha decided not to make a third gen FZ1 instead made the naked MT10 that completely flopped in the USA, you can still buy new 2018 MT10 in 2020. I too bought the Tracer (FJ09) instead.
It flopped because they completley lost sight of the purpose of a naked bike; it was supposed to be a cheaper cost high power bike for a round 10k. The MT10 was too expensive and didn't fill any roles well.
I think I prefer this bike to some of the newer offerings, though I do have a thing for the MT-10. But I imagine this could be much less complicated - and therefore easier to work on - which matters for DIY mechanics

I’ve also broke and replaced the frame (stoppies), replaced coils, flywheel bearings, wheel bearings, head tube bearings, diagnosed and fixed electrical gremlins caused by previous shoddy modifications etc, replaced the intake manifold/throttle bodies, all done in my driveway with an admittedly adequate tool collection. I also have training in automotive mechanics, but because the bike is so common and popular everything I’ve done is explained on RUclips. One thing that replacing all these bearings has taught me though is heat and cold are your friends. If you have to remove the bearing, heat up the surrounding casing with a blow torch or something and often it will come right out, and when installing bearings put them in the freezer when you start the project, then when you are ready to install them into a preheated warm outer casing, the ice cold and smaller bearings pop right in. Between that and having a really large set of sockets that work as bearing drivers I haven’t needed any specialty tools, slide hammer, presses etc.
Throttle response sucks . I also stall this thing more than I care to admit. But that said an ECU flash will fix factory problems. Other than the rotor assembly and its magnet problem.
You must have had a different seat on the bike or padded trousers because I used to ride my dad’s Fazer1000 and the seat was absolutely horrendous 😩 they are a great bike though. Upgraded suspension and some rear sets, it’d embarrass sports bikes on a track day 👍🏻
Decent review, but one thing I will say after having owned one for three years is that they are NOT COMFORTABLE at all. The seat is thin and doesn't offer much room, and don't even think about a pillion. You absolutely must upgrade it. I used to own a VFR 750 and it was so much more comfortable I was actually disappointed when I upgraded. In fact, I used to a ZX9R and I actually think the seat was much better on that too. Also, I have the 2008 model and there is no issue with the fueling. I do believe that was only the 2006 model that had a problem.
The sound when riding the bike was horrible! Maybe acceptable in 2006, but nowdays motobloggers do a much better job with less money. Nice video, but poor sound quality
I have a 1st and 2nd gen. I used to own a 2nd gen r1. They do have much better "torque delivery". They just move the powerband down where you actually use it in the street. You lose some top end power because it doesn't redline as high and gain it back down low. Not many people are riding around on the street at 12000 rpm all the time lol. Off the line an FZ1 will drop an R1. The torque curve is almost identical to a 1000cc twin like the SV1000 but where the twin does out up top @ 115hp the FZ1 keeps pulling and still has that I4 top end rush. It's the perfect engine.

Own a red FZ1 S 2010. He’s right, 150bhp and 160mph... it’s a great bike for the money.

I just bought an 03 and it's such a phenomenal motorcycle. I bought it at 15,000 miles, just rolled over 16,000 miles and I'll keep it until I die.

I picked it up for nicks and LOVE IT , handles pretty good ( not quite as good as the Benelli - its probably the best handling bike I have ever owned ) but its no bad , its comfy , its fantastic fuel economy ( around 400kms on a 20lt tank -with normal riding ) easy to service and most of all Reliable. Would be great if you stared doing reviews on some older but great bikes. I'm over throwing money away on new bikes now ( but admit its still VERY temping like the V85 Moto Guzzi, . Yamaha T7, etc ) but will now put money towards BIG bike trips away.
Had a ‘06 in Liquid Silver, looked great, went great particularly after I had the throttle response problem addressed, I put an Arrow slip on on mine that deleted the exhaust valve, man that thing sounded angry, best sounding four cylinder I’ve heard after the Cross Plane R1’s with Akra pipes.
No need for a power commander to remove the hesitation, the throttle position sensor (tps) can be adjusted manually by hand and using the on board diagnostic mode built in to the clocks. I've done a few minor modifications to my own, gearing and exhaust etc but I have to say, the best modification I've done to it is changing the standard throttle cables to the domino quick action. Love this bike
That's why I bought my Naked FZ1 for a litre class bike with high performance nothing else came close to its price, when the time comes to replacing it I'd have to effectively downgrade in power at least as nothing with the same amount now is anywhere near the price

Few months ago I bought my 2007 FZ1. Only 36.000 kms for Eur4700. So much fun on this motorcycle. I just love It. Its gonna he with me for a lot of years.
As a young boy, it was my second most favourite bike after the R1....
Had a Fazer Thou for two years, did everything on it - superbike school, touring to GPs two up and daily commuting. Uprated the rear spring, had the forks revalved and dumped the ME-Z4 stock tyres for Pirelli Corsas - different bike. Great value for money.

Came back and saw this short vid because of the FZ1S! Given good memories for missus n me, kids too when I had to give a quick run to school. Trusty, but as with all Yamahas, they tend to get a little hot and thats where its a turn off. Raided Thailand n Malaysia for 2 yrs on it before traded in for a CRF1000L. 👍
Had FZS 1000 (FZ1 1st gen) for 10 years and now running FZ1S 2nd gen for second year. Great bikes and really best worth of money you can get.
I have an 05 first gen. Which one do you like more? There's alot of cheap Gen 2s near me.
@@brandonvaccaro2960 I love both of them. My FZS was getting high milage so it was time to get something new and 2nd gen was logical step forward. I feel that lower revs torque is better in 1st gen and cruising is smoother. 2nd gen requires higher revs for everything.
My only complaint with 2nd gen would be fuel economy and tank size. You need to re-fuel about 100km earlier.

@@Nick-dz4ml with the new one I usually refuel around 230km when the fuel gauge makes me nervous about running out of fuel :) and then it takes in about 14L. If I recall correctly I used to refuel the old one in 320km. The fuel consumption with the old one was about 5,2L/100km and with new one 6,1L/100km

I had bought a '06 fz6s with 80 000 km on the clock the motor had never been split apart from timing chain replacement and and valve adjustments superb motorcycles the bike died at 139 000km as it t-boned a vw golf had it not been for the pesky golf I'm sure it would have gone on to live Much longer

What a wonderful wonderful bike. Carburetors, people don't like it, but I prefer them to a jerky trothle of new bikes. I can honestly say, FZS1000 is the best jack of all trades I've ever came a cross.
@@andrewbozhozr very cool, and I agree! And the carb version of the FZ1 has a 1 US gallon larger gas tank and gets better MPG than the 2006+ version. I think it's the better of the 2 versions, though I'm obviously biased :p

Enjoyed this. I have a 2012 fz1 Fazer and love it, it's an incredibly underrated bike. Mine's just ticked over 27000 miles, doesn't miss a beat. I use it in all weather's and for all riding. I've test ridden a lot of new bikes and none of them justify their price tag imo, they're really not that much better than my fz1. I would like to see Yamaha make a fully faired MT10 though... don't really understand why they haven't, it would be able to compete with the Kawasaki S1000sx (or Ninja sx as it is now).

42000 miles and stock yamaha stator crapped out on me. Starter relay replaced. Breaks, tires, oil and well nothing else that I can think of. Very good motorcycle. I'd take a 2015 but only if it was free.

I own a FZ1 N 2008. Its an awesome ride but if your in the market for one be a bit careful. The 2006 and early 2007 models have some problems with frame cracking. And what ever second gen you buy, change the rotor for the alternator to the new one and thank me later.

The first gen FZ1 is still one of my all time favorite bike. Unfortunately Yamaha decided not to make a third gen FZ1 instead made the naked MT10 that completely flopped in the USA, you can still buy new 2018 MT10 in 2020. I too bought the Tracer (FJ09) instead.
It flopped because they completley lost sight of the purpose of a naked bike; it was supposed to be a cheaper cost high power bike for a round 10k. The MT10 was too expensive and didn't fill any roles well.

My FZ1 ‘07 is about to hit 100k miles and I love it! I picked it up for $2500. It’s the ϟ version but as soon as the weather clears up a bit I’m doing the naked conversion. The ϟ looks good but the n is badass. I’m a big guy so aside from all the performance bolt ons I have some renthal Street fighter handlebars which are a little wider and taller and it’s soo comfortable. I’ve also broke and replaced the frame (stoppies), replaced coils, flywheel bearings, wheel bearings, head tube bearings, diagnosed and fixed electrical gremlins caused by previous shoddy modifications etc, replaced the intake manifold/throttle bodies, all done in my driveway with an admittedly adequate tool collection. I also have training in automotive mechanics, but because the bike is so common and popular everything I’ve done is explained on RUclips.
One thing that replacing all these bearings has taught me though is heat and cold are your friends. If you have to remove the bearing, heat up the surrounding casing with a blow torch or something and often it will come right out, and when installing bearings put them in the freezer when you start the project, then when you are ready to install them into a preheated warm outer casing, the ice cold and smaller bearings pop right in. Between that and having a really large set of sockets that work as bearing drivers I haven’t needed any specialty tools, slide hammer, presses etc.

Throttle response sucks . I also stall this thing more than I care to admit.
But that said an ECU flash will fix factory problems. Other than the rotor assembly and its magnet problem.
You must have had a different seat on the bike or padded trousers because I used to ride my dad’s Fazer1000 and the seat was absolutely horrendous 😩 they are a great bike though. Upgraded suspension and some rear sets, it’d embarrass sports bikes on a track day 👍🏻

I've heard that about Suzuki GSXR's but not FZ1's, but i could be mistaken.
@@scriptmaster3357 gsxr had issues around the headtube I believe. These failed on the main frame weld.

Decent review, but one thing I will say after having owned one for three years is that they are NOT COMFORTABLE at all. The seat is thin and doesn't offer much room, and don't even think about a pillion. You absolutely must upgrade it. I used to own a VFR 750 and it was so much more comfortable I was actually disappointed when I upgraded. In fact, I used to a ZX9R and I actually think the seat was much better on that too.
Also, I have the 2008 model and there is no issue with the fueling. I do believe that was only the 2006 model that had a problem.

The Fz1 is the Porsche on the street. Capable of all. Always on the road, not inside of a dealership for endless rip-ass fixing
Wind protection is bad. Air is all forced up into the helmet. Very very loud and buffeting.
The sound when riding the bike was horrible! Maybe acceptable in 2006, but nowdays motobloggers do a much better job with less money. Nice video, but poor sound quality

I have a 1st and 2nd gen. I used to own a 2nd gen r1. They do have much better "torque delivery". They just move the powerband down where you actually use it in the street. You lose some top end power because it doesn't redline as high and gain it back down low. Not many people are riding around on the street at 12000 rpm all the time lol. Off the line an FZ1 will drop an R1. The torque curve is almost identical to a 1000cc twin like the SV1000 but where the twin does out up top @ 115hp the FZ1 keeps pulling and still has that I4 top end rush. It's the perfect engine.
