ANYTHING that is harmful for us is haram in islam. If we look at all the haram things, they're haram because they are harmful for us. So songs which have bad lyrics (that lead us away from the path of Allah) are haram. The songs which motivate us or bring us pleasure, and they do not lead us away from the path of Allah are halal. And about MUSIC... Music is "Sur" right? Even in the recitation of Quran there is Sur/music. It does not bring any harm nor does it lead us away from the right path... So it's okay to listen to music.
