    I am paralyzed and seeing this video gives me so much hope for the future. I am very interested in the US based trials, as my injury is only a year old, and still healing. Can you please provide more information on that? Thanks Dagogo.

    As a person who has had a spinal injury from a motorcycle accident, I am both surprised and not surprised by this. My injury did not leave me with paralysis, but I have diminished nerve feedback. Basically, my left leg is “asleep” permanently. I was equipped with a spinal cord stimulator mentioned here for pain management. It has helped me regain a mostly normal life. My pain is manageable now, and I’ve adapted to the lack of feedback. All of my cars are stick shift, and I have no problem driving them now.
    Wonderful job, Dagogo. Thank you for this.

    • @ashihtaka
      @ashihtaka 2 года назад +2

      Can you describe your accident and how you got injured? Did your back hit something when you fell?

    • @TheMadTube
      @TheMadTube 2 года назад +25

      Yes. I was on my motorcycle when someone ran a stop sign. He pulled out in front of me. My bike hit his front fender, and I was pulled under the truck. My lumbar area already had degraded from genetics and previous injuries. But the accident tore the disc completely. My vertebrae were grinding bone on bone, pinching nerves with severe pain. I was 29 and walking with a cane. Some good doctors decided to fuse my spine from the L3-S1 region with titanium pins and rods. They could fix the pain OR the nerve damage. But not both. My left leg was completely numb, so I elected for fixing the nerve damage. It worked. Whilst I don’t have completely restored nerves, it is much better than before. But the frequent surgeries and damage left extensive scar tissue with severe chronic pain. Four years after the fusion, I had the stimulator implant. It has lessened the pain considerably and truly was one of the best decisions I made. It has significant caveats with it, but it is well worth it.

    • @formandcontent7772
      @formandcontent7772 2 года назад +1

      Can you speak more about the stimulator implant? I’m considering getting one and I’m curious about the trade offs/side effects/sensations from it

    • @TheMadTube
      @TheMadTube 2 года назад +10

      Absolutely. First, you need a trial run. Stimulator surgery is not for everyone. The varying amounts of nerve damage from person to person means you may not benefit from it. You’ll be fitted with temporary wires going into the spine with a bulky exterior unit to try. If it works, you’ll get the semi-permanent one.
      First, it does not eliminate pain. It merely obfuscates it like TENS pads you get in physical therapy. In my case, I have pins and needles sensations in my left leg and lower back. It takes a while, but you can adapt. Your nerve biofeedback is diminished, so it feels like after you’ve moved from your leg falling asleep. Eventually muscle memory will take over and you can learn to use your extremity with little feeling. My left leg is asleep all the time, but I can drive my vehicles with zero issue. I have two cars and an crossover that are all manual transmission and have zero issue using a clutch. Truthfully, I only drive stick because it’s perpetual physical therapy for me. I feel my leg would atrophy without it.
      The implant consists of four components: the actual implant, electrodes that go into the spinal cord, remote to control the implant, and a wireless charger. The implant is inserted into the fat cap between your skin and muscles. It does bulge out under the skin, especially if you become more lean. At the beach or pool, I wear an over shirt to hide the unit and the numerous scars on my back. It has a battery that needs charged every couple months. The battery charger is a small hockey puck device that you wrap over the unit to charge it up. It uses beeps to align it and let you when it’s done charging. The remote is a garage door opener looking device that can change the level of stimulation, programs, frequency, et cetera. The implant will need replacement after 7-10 years, since it is a battery operated unit. I had my surgery in 2014, but my original unit is still there.
      It has caveats. Metal detectors are problematic. I have a medical card to carry when that becomes an issue. TSA can be troublesome. The charger needs to stay wrapped around you for many hours to charge up. This also can be…….an issue….. with security. There was an unpleasant experience I had with a bank security guard a few years back, but I’ve explained that elsewhere.

      I damaged L4-L5 a year ago and my left leg gives out at times still. Numb around the knee when I walk it “slips” in a way. When I use muscle at the leg, no issues. Only when I walk. Crazy how much the spine does for us

    This was so inspiring to hear. It's a simple thing: sending correct intensity of electric signals to correct muscles, but the bio-engineering involved needs to be sooo accurate, it's an amazing feat the team was able to achieve this. Hopefully this would be done in future through skin and not invasive spinal cord surgery. Hats off to the researchers working on this, thank you ♥️

    • @adolfodef

      Something like this was impossible 10 years ago because we did not had neural nets cappable to "develop" the necesary algorithm & the 3D spatial simulation in order to NOT having to solve this issues through trial & error with living humans.
      Perhaps the 3rd Reich could have "disposed" enough "test samples" to interpolate the correct locations for the implants, the intensity of the signals & the correct sequences [we are talking of hundreds or thousands of "unsucessfull" tries that would lead to death (or even worse) results]; in any other place it would be a no_no imposed by the local ethics_bureocracy.

    As a PM&R physician I treated spinal cord injuries on a regular basis. It's hard to comprehend what is lost with a complete spinal cord injury. Bowel, bladder, sexual function, walking, standing, getting up, lying down...so much of what we all do without even a thought is completely gone. Then there's bed sores, skin infections, bladder and kidney infections, bowel impactions and so on.
    In training back in the 1990's these technologies were only a very, very distant dream. To see this happening now I am deeply moved for the real hope that lies in the near future. Just wow.

However I do have a complaint about it. As you mentioned in this video, this treatments focus on recent spinal cord injured persons. I can imagine that there are good medical reasons to do so. Nevertheless longer spinal cord injured people like myself do deteriorate physically over the years and I think it would be great to offer a solution for us too and not focus solely on new injured patients. If not, some day it might be too late. Anyhow thanks for your interesting videos, I' m a big fan of yours!

    I'm a C5 complete quad, post-injury 19 years. I wonder if there's a level they stop at? Age that they stop at? This could possibly be life-changing for myself and others who qualify. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. I plan on contacting the appropriate people to find out more info.
    The headline states ''COMPLETELY'' paralyzed which makes me think between C1-C3, not a T-level or lower level spinal injury which appears to be the level of the man in the video as it seems that he has full upper body movement and strength which would make a huge difference over a higher level quad..

    • @yeetdeets
      @yeetdeets 2 года назад +1

      They are probably gathering data like mad on this. If they see neurons growing from the stimulation, they probably switch focus towards stem cells, neurotophins and temporary implant/skin patches. It's much easier to see neuron growth go from 1mm/year to 1.5mm/year, than from 0mm/year to 0.01mm/year, so any boost in growth from the implant will help them find the correct growth stimuli much easier and faster.
      Either way, this most likely unlocks a bunch of progress in the field. Paraplegics will probably both have the means and the will to pay out the nose for really good treatments for this, so it's going to happen. And then it will absolutely bring solutions for quadriplegics and tetraplegics as well. I have no idea how long it will take though.
      I don't work in the field, it's just some thoughts.

      He's the person I love, he's my light
      day. The way the music flows and sounds
      is extravagant and fun. Anna is
      icon, legend, beautiful girl, princess, inspiration,
      a star. I could go on and on, understand this.
