The original was the finest and a great piece of work in every way. The directing, the dialogue, the performances, the style, the narration and story-telling...and most certainly, the soundtrack. It's not often you find a movie that pulls all of this off and with a unique style. Some lament how the sequel and/or remake pale in comparison, but as for me...I'm grateful I got to enjoy the original, grateful for the memories.
+FranticAnimations The film is so brilliant. The music, outstanding on its own, is not enough; just look at the sequel, the destroyer, it had the same music, and still it was atrocious.

100 percent. I've been watching this movie since I was a little kid, my mom would take me to the store and that's the only VHS I always picked every week. I'm 36 now and still has that same effect on me. Thanks Basil RIP.
I am always in tears when the score plays and Conan is sitting on those steps and reminiscing his life, his regret, and his losses. Anyone must've felt like Conan at that moment at least once in their lives.
@@ionicafardefrica That's the way he was taught and raised by those evil masters, to be a heartless grunt, a power house of blood and gore. But deep down... he is still just a kid, the love and care he got from his mother, wisdom from his father and remembering where he came from, knowing his people. And being in love for the first time with Valeria. Those are deep inside of him.
This movie had such a dramatic and significant impact on my life.. Watched it twice the day it was released in Albuquerque New Mexico. Early eighties.20 years old... I had finished an epic trek around western america the previous year.. Wound up not going into the Marine Corps.. ..hitchhiking... From Bremerton to Portland to San Diego.. Then to Albuquerque. Seven days of walking.. One entire day to walk through Yuma Arizona , over the Gila mountains. And i had read Frank Howards works in High school years earlier... London, Heinlein, Asimov.. This movie seemed a reflection of my life. And the music is so powerful, takes me back to hiking through the desert at sun-up in the middle of nowhere, me and my buddy , just like it was yesterday. This man was a true artist with a masters talent. Life is beyond description. And music is indeed timeless...
In fact, brave men feel like staying alive, don't retreat no surrender... TopBasil hit propuse on his work! Marine Corps? It's simply, not for you... Don't lay in messes 😊!
I love the scene where Conan is sitting on the steps in deep contemplation a few rows from Thulsa Doom's severed head. Getting revenge was the entire meaning of his existence up until that point and he's probably just thinking "Well, now what?".
I felt so melancholy today, woke up in the middle of the night with this in my head...dreaming about the purpose of life. I'm playing it just imagining my ancestors from ages past, did those warriors do the same? I guess they did. some things in humanity never change.
OMFG!!! Now THIS is how you score the end of an epic!!!! This gives me chills down my spine thinking of how he swings that latern of fire and throws it at the temple!!!! CLASSIC!!!!
My child, you have come to me, my son. For who now is your father if it is not me? I am the well spring, from which you flow. When I am gone, you will have never been. What would your world be, without me? My son ! Slaaack ! In u face !
I felt similar once i graduated high school. All my life so far consisted of working and studying in school but with no idea what i would do once I'm finished with it aside from being relieved that its finally done; and so it was done. Now that I accomplished walking down the stage to get my diploma, what else is there to do? I didnt really want to consider going to college and tolerating more years of stressful studying and listening and so was getting an ordinary job the best thing for now? Over 4 years later with working only 2 jobs now i feel this emptyness.. a sort of existential crisis and over melancholy feeling. I feel like i can do so much more in this life and the potential that I have will go waste and knowing that once im older will cause me to self loath; it would haunt me in my old age that i in my younger years couldve stived for something more that will benefit me not only financially but also feel fulfilled. I have so much to explore and consider to do in my life and ill have to do it quickly since i am still young after all... I'll find that purpose undoubtedly one day...
@@personagrata-c4n meh... I guess many people like it. To me it really didn't do much. I can hardly remember a tune from it, to be honest. I found it rather boring. I also didn't love the movies but they were ok. Peter Jackson exaggerates the drama and overuses slow motion
Whenever I've overcome a great ordeal, I think of this music. I sit and think on what I've done, as Conan did on the steps along the Mountain of Power. In this scene, everyone had to think: Doom's "orphans", including Conan, although Thulsa Doom was really the opposite of a father. He broke people down for his own gain, not to build them into strong-willed individuals. Thinking on one's own isn't easy, but we all must do it to have a healthy society. We all must grow apart from our parents, as much as we may love them. We must learn to care for ourselves, and then others.
Don't know why, but this music feels like it be perfect for a game where you finally face off a Villain in any game and once you defeated the main evil in the game, you and your character feel like you accomplished your goal... And yet, you don't know what you must do now... But follow your own story and your own destiny.
@sneegro Thulsa, indeed, created what Conan is now, now he must feel like he hast lost another father, an evil father but the one that gave him the will to survive and to get his revenge; he must feel very weak and empty at that moment on the steps, having lost that will to seek revenge. Brilliant scene, what a way to end the movie, If only filmakers or producers had the guts to pull another scene like this in nowadays movies...
@rukus100821 The only other film scorer I can think of is Ennio Morricone, but Morricone predates Poledouris and is great in his own stature; I'm sure you've heard his score for "Red Sonja".
amunraankh Awesome observation that almost everyone else here seems to have missed! Poledouris was actually a student of Morricone’s style. Reminiscent of Bach influencing other famous composers coming after him.
You can find a longer version of this in the 30th Anniversary Edition, replacing the solo voice with a chorus and a harp instead of the orchestra at the beginning.
@terminator324343 i think Conan snapped out of the whole hypnosis thulsa put on him when he saw his fathers sword. After slaying thulsa doom he had no purpose in life. His entire life was revenge. Now he had to think what he was going to do next. With valera no longer by his side and no clear goal in life he sat down to think. Aventually he decided to become a king by his own hand. That's how i think it is.
@NetVoyagerOne He throws down his fathers sword because he got his revenge. His entire life was based on getting back at thulsa doom. Once he killed him he threw down thulsa dooms flame showing the orphans that they are now free to live their life. After that he throws down his fathers sword because because Conan is finally free to live his life aswel. His revenge is complete. Just as how the orphans lived to follow doom , Conan lived for revenge. Now they are both set free and can put it behind

@NetVoyagerOne i figured that part of the epic is that through fate he found an even stronger sword than his father's, in the tomb. if he had his father's sword all along, he might not have been able to defeat the priest of thulsa doom. i also thought that destroying his father's sword might be an allegory for becoming a man--he must "kill" his father in order to take his own place in life.
the movie is far different from the real conan......yes he did have nothing to do with his life......but he left cimmeria becuse it was fucking boring there....
All'inizio della composizione sembra una musica da chiesa ma alla fine è da cardiopalma - bellissima e struggente - bravo Basil a musicare un film immenso.
I listen to this music on its own minus the show and it has a real unique sound that makes one think beautiful pieces. The dune soundtrack is pretty cool to by ToTo.
4:26 to 5:32 - The final shot of a potential _The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time_ live-action film showing Link and Zelda staring at each other in the castle garden.
It's probably only me, but I find it really sad when Thulsa Doom is dead and all those people feel empty and hopeless, walking away and leaving behind something that gave them meaning and now it's gone.
The Conan the Barbarian soundtrack will always be Basil's Magnum Opus for me. Just masterful.
Conan. A True Free Man. No Hang Ups, No Anxieties, just a Raw Passion for an Adventurous Life Backed By Cold Steel!
It's revenge he's after. That is a hang up. All the same, what you just described is the quintessential lifestyle of the frontiersman. Sounds great
Basil Poledouris made that movie immortal!

TES V: Skyrim + Basil Poledouris (Conan OST) = True Definition of EPIC
Inevitable end of life
Audio glitch at 0:18? Seems to be an issue with the original recording, nothing wrong with this upload.
What is best in life?
“To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.”
Thulsa Doom dislikes this song.
Music is reason why this cult movie deserves to be watched again and again...Superb work by Basil!!
And because the film is badass and has great characters.

Not just the iconic music but also Arnold's equally iconic portrayal of Robert E Howard's greatest creation & one of Fantasy's most enduring heroes.

After Conan achieved his lifelong dream - he ponders in sadness; without any reason to live.
Honor and fear were heaped upon his name and, in time, he became a king by his own hand... And this story shall also be told.
