Whether he went or not he wasn't going to win from appearing; the best he could do was secure what he has from attack; but overall his appearing was lose-lose option for him. 6) Not turning up wasn't about taking the voters for granted; it was about not being part of a media production that was about them; rather than about the public. Otherwise why would they refuse to inform the public HE was not coming; & continue pretending that he was, while they knew very well he had already said he wasn't going to show up? 7) H.E knew media was looking for a fight - for blood - so as to make headlines, without appreciating that it was only going to raise temperatures even higher 14 days to an already hyper-intense elections.
