We played this album until it wore out, although I didn’t discover it until 95. The whole album is one big track of magic and joy
18 when this album came out.
It was the time of groundbreaking music. Between the british invasion. And the music coming out of the San francisco bay area. Not to mention the music that was coming out of greenwich village in new york. It was a fucking amazing time hurt for listening to music. Peace ✌️
..and of course all the Canadian and English groups that enriched our souls - Neil Young is one of Canada's greatest exports..

So I was 17 when this came out and loved it then, still love it today even more. I say even more, because it was a time when musical artistry came out with something new every week and we just soaked it up, even expected it, I think! We didn't realize it was as special as we do now. I am honored to have grown up with these masterpieces from so many!
So spoilt we were and had no idea!
Neil has ploughed a lone furrow for many years.....he's out on his own, for sure.

Music was changing so fast in the ‘60s that between, for instance 1965-1970, you can hear a song and tell exactly which year it was recorded. The Beatles probably set the pace. Listen to ‘HELP!’, ‘Rubber Soul’, ‘Revolver’, ‘Sgt Pepper’, ‘White Album’, ‘Abbey Road’. Each represents a specific year, and all the bands were competing to outdo each other. Everything changed from year to year. Cars were redesigned every year. The USA was going through a golden age and we didn’t know it. It seems like it exhausted us. Time to wake up! You’re creating a great channel. Thank you.

Seeing Neil and Crazy Horse play live in the 70's was stunning. I smashed up my brand new Firebird on the way to see them at Madison Square Garden. Still made it in time for the show.
The ultimate Neil Young concert film is "Rust Never Sleeps" 1979. Perfectly directed, well mixed, Neil in his prime. Highly recommend your viewing and or posting and reacting to it.

The first grunge album 20 years before the term was thought of. This and Cortez the Killer are probably my favourite Crazy Horse tracks. Nothing like the Horse when they get into that groove.
This one is still new and shiny after my 45 years of hearing it. One of Neils best. The "Live" acoustic version from the album "4 Way Street" is also worth hearing.
The solo 4WS version was the only one adolescent me knew, for some time: imagine my surprise - when I saved up enough money to buy this album, too. I'm really surprised I never heard it on my local AOR station, beforehand.
This whole album is just unbelievable. Cinnamon Girl is a must.

Neil is a beast on this one! Lee seems amazed that this was turned out in '69. He's learning that we were swimming in a Golden Age of rock in that era. Great reaction, Lee!
These songs were recorded without vocals. Added later, same with "Like a hurricane". Love to hear those without the vocals, just to hear what they heard. Crazy Horse had only been together for two weeks, when they recorded the album.

One of the best intro ever. The picking, then more picking…lovely…mmm…then - BAM! Knockout.
Neil once described the Crazy Horse sound like this: "It's like a picture in a frame. Ralph on the drums is the bottom, Billy on bass is the top, Danny is the sides, and I just paint in the middle." Cowgirl in the sand, Down by the River & Cinnamon Girl are all from this Album, the rest of the songs are pretty good as well. The next album, After The Gold Rush in 1970 & the Crazy Horse Album in 1971 are all loaded with great tracks.

About a decade later Springsteen wrote "Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk" in his song Thunder Road. It always makes me think of Cowgirl era Neil. He def made it talk.

I love watching your reactions to the music that redefined my world. I'm 39 years older than you, and I had my mind blown the first time I heard/saw The Benny Goodman Orchestra play 'Sing Sing Sing'. Recorded for a movie in the late 1930's, I had no idea that there was music from that era that was so energetic and flaming hot! You might like it too, especially when you get to know the drummer, Gene Krupa. A lot of what came in 60's/70's and beyond, started in the early 20th century. Benny, Gene, and the rest of the band were fortunate to be recorded in high-def audio and film, which makes them more accessible than most musicians from that era. I hope that you have the chance to go way back in time and enjoy even more amazing music makers. Thanks for doing what you do!😁

Badass. Too bad Ya cant get him playing Outta the Blue and into the Black from the movie Live Rust..so badass what he does....unique psychedelic PURE F'N GUITAR ROCK/STONER HEAVAN. So much outta so little. He actually has short hair and Mork and Mindy suspenders on. Sings some lines..shuffles over to his left for 30 seconds of guitar bliss...shuffles back over to sing some more then repeats the shuffling off to his left for even better ( which is impossible cuz its so good) 30 second jam. To me its right up there with the coolest shit i have ever seen on a video.
Once upon a time I took a hit of acid just before midnight and then listened to this album over and over till the sunrise. Words can't really describe it, but I remember realizing that part of the genius of Niel's playing is the way the meaning of it all in a way is hidden in the simple repetitious moments - just the same way the meaning of life is hidden in the ordinary day-to-day.
I did that with After The Goldrush, lol.

The first album that I bought ar age 14 in 69. In 71 Crazy Horse released their debut album. Listen to I don't want to talk about it. A beautiful song by Danny. Later a hit for Rod Stewert. The whole album is worth a listen.
All three songs written in one day, whilst Neil had the flu with a high temp!!!!! A dreamer of pictures... Myth and dream are of the deepest level. Mystical dimension, beyond time-space. A.k.a. "eternity!!!! By the way, dream is the "present"! It's "U" of "AUM". Listen-follow your muses and trust the process for it's all process!
Whenever you can, react to a whole album, to get the real flavor of how we’d experience them. There were singles back then (45 rpm records) but during this period in musical history the album was all of a piece, and meant something - the song choices and the order they were arranged. Even non-concept albums like this one.
For example, you really have to do Neil Young’s album, “Harvest” by listening to the whole thing, rather than one song here and there. It is really his greatest masterpiece….
Also one of my fav NY songs. It just carries you along for a ride, like on the rapids down a raging river. Crazy Horse is an extremely good backup band and fit Neil’s style perfectly!
And not to mention the 1-note guitar solo…..

Hey Lee, you probably find it unbelievable this music was produced probably 30 years before you were born. So glad you are discovering this music and watching your reaction for the first time is priceless. Nice critique! Neil Young rocks! ✌️
You mentioned Danny Whitten on second guitar. Danny was one of the people who inspired Neil's song “The Needle and the Damage Done.” He became a heroin addict, and despite the efforts of the other members of Crazy Horse and Young to get him straight, he died of a drug and alcohol overdose in November 1972. For years Neil felt guilty that he had not been able to help Danny more.
Certainly my favorite as well and I’ve been a fan since the 70’s. Tonight’s the Night from the Live Rust is a killer guitar fest as well. CRUNCHY it’s why a lot of people consider him the original “grunge” master. He uses distortion and tone brilliantly. To this day, still the loudest concert I’ve ever been to.

Grew up in the 70’s in the Bay Area, just outside of San Francisco. Used we were all long hairs back then . We’d save our $5.00 from not buying school lunches for a week get some gas head to Winterland for the Friday night or Saturday night show . Stopping in Berkeley or “ the purple house” high on the hill . Pickup some owsley acid and watch the show . Seen many a band , and Crazy Horse many times . Saw them play in RWC - at a club was smoking a joint outback with Neil , Sampedro & Molina . Really cool people, anyway that’s how it was back then . I’m 69 now love to see you young guys enjoying, what we knew was the best music .

This was basically the soundtrack highschool and early college years
I'm 63 and this is still just as awesome and always will be! The band definitely lost a huge dynamic with the loss of Danny. He and Neil were true soul brothers and Neil did everything to try to save him. Imagine thier conversations and jam sessions. The story goes that Danny was in love with a 16 year old girl. Maybe that's where Cowgirl in the sand came from? The biggest thing I have always loved about Neil is that he has always been true to himself and never cared if he was popular. Even when it hurt those he loved and lost him money. A true force of nature, and so glad he is still rocking!!!
This is one of my favourites. A few others amazing tracks: The Old Laughing Lady, Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl.
What is it like when you realize that your grandfather was listening to this song when he was 15 years old?
By the way the song Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan was about , when the Fed had outlawed Acid . And Owsley went on the run , the purple house on the hill is where he made acid and gave it away for free . The real good pure stuff.

Ok, here's the thing; there's an album called Three Way Street, live, Neil, alongside CS & N that I strongly recommend you to dive to. The tracks Carry on and Long Time Gone are simply amazing to listen to but the whole album is a gem. Keep on doin' the way you are. Have my blessings.

This is fantastic. Even better in some ways is the live concert version if this song on 4 Way Street. Pure solo, just Neil with acoustic guitar and a huge audience. Seriously, whether you react or not, you must hear it. Funny, I never had a clue what a shredder he was until last year when I heard this version. I always had thought he was *only* gifted at acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals, and songwriting!!!! Thank you!!!

You done “Down By The River” and “Cowgirl In The Sand”……now you just gotta do “CINNAMON GIRL”. As I said before, Neil made some great albums but this has always been my favourite…..I played it to death when it was first released and I still play it now….40 odd years later!!!
It sometime scared me when the vocals kicked in after you’ve been jamming to the groove while stoned!

I believe Jonathan Demme filmed a live Neil Young & friends concert about 20 years ago at a place called the Ryman Theater. It's called 'Heart of Gold' You an find clips of the documentary on RUclips.

CSN first sang together at a house warming party for Joni Mitchell in a community in Los Angeles called Laurel Canyon which acted like a music incubator from 1964-1974.
Some of the notable artists and groups who lived there were; Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Love, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Carole King, Judy Collins, The Monkeys, Harry Nillson, Alice Cooper, Ringo Star, The Eagles, James Taylor, John Lennon.

Some of the best and most creative music came out of the late 1960’s into the early 1970’s much of which was influenced by musicians living ILaurel Canyon near Los Angeles. Look it up there is a documentary about how the musicians used to go and play together or feed off each others ideas. Neil, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Crosby, Joni Mitchell, The Manas and the Papas, and many others lived in this close knit area.
Amazing artist try the Loner from his first album or Like a hurricane from Stars and Bars. The album Trans is so far ahead of its time computer genius. Never be another Neil.

Don't let anyone tell you that Neil Young couldn't play his guitar just because he did "one note solos". That's BS. The guy is unbelievably talented. I saw him do a solo show in the early 80s, and he played electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, piano and synthesizer. Unreal....

I hope you continue to hang around the late 60’s-early 70’s area for a while.. so much great music came outta that time, and really pretty much every genre was hitting it on the mark and raising the bar on themselves, it’s absolutely mind bending.
Being that you’re a drummer, I’d highly suggest you keep delving into Santana, but also some early funk stuff. Even Neil Young would agree with me on this.. I guarantee it!
James Brown for ONE, is just absolutely incredible, but the really juicy stuff isn’t the big “hits”, you should check out “I Can’t Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)”, “I Got The Feeling”, or “Get On The Good Foot”.
The Meters are another great example of other worldly stellar funk stuff any drummer should hear. “Hey Pocky Way” is a good starter, but the entire album “Rejuvination” is just mind blowing and genius in its simplicity. “Just Kissed My Baby” is as great a party tune as there ever was.
Great reaction for this classic Neil tune though. Other standouts by him to me are “The Loner”, “Words”, and “When You Dance (I Can Really Love)”.

I'm impressed by your awareness that this certain period of time was unusually unique. It was like an explosion and everybody just rode the wave of the blast. The "Boomers" carried it from Little Richard to Jimi Hendrix, from the "adults" to the "experienced", leaving Pat Boone in its wake. I lived through it and still don't understand it.

the version on 4 way street, which is a live c,s,n and y album is much better. To quote Neil "This is a song that starts out really slow, then fizzles out all together" classic
